Thanks for the great video Dave. You are always a joy to watch. Your upbeat and friendly attitude are so soothing and uplifting. Keep spreading the joy of woodworking.
I bought one of these over twenty years ago- still in its case. Thank you for the tutorial Dave! You are a gem. Will make some dowels after I finish your bench.
Thanks for this Dave, I bought one of these dowel cutters and couldn't get the thing to make decent dowels. I read the instructions over and over and tried resetting things as they advised several times. I eventually took the blades out and remounted them, despite the instructions saying that they would be factory set. They were miles out. I reset them and got a perfect dowel first time. All of this was thanks to watching how you set the jig up - so much better explained that the instruction manual. Love your channel by the way. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad the video was helpful for you and that you found it easy to follow along. Enjoy using your new purchase!
This is the best instructional video available for using this tool. It seems complicated until you go through it. Terrific tool. They should include your video with it.
Thanks for the vid. I bought my Veritas doweler and the 3/8ths insert back in 2005. I've made many hundreds of arrow shafts with it. However I haven't made any in a few years and completely forgot how to adjust the tool. So thanks again. When the plane blades get dull you will start getting tear out, instead of a nice smooth cut. To renew the edge I use my DMT stones, and green stropping compound. Tandem blades make this a very good tool design for production doweling.
After waiting 6 months for the master kit, had to settle for the basic. I bought it a month ago. Blades came through dull! Sent Veritas a pic of me trying to cut my finger with blade - not happening. Vertitas blew off my assertion the blade was dull. Took pic of the bevel - rough - never finish honed by them. And without Dave's excellent video I would have never figured out the details of setting up. Not at all satisfied with Veritas, but very satisfied with Dave's guidance.
Thanks so much for this video. The Veritas dowel maker is a really great product, with a truly inadequate user manual. If it hadn't been for your video, I might have returned the dowel maker. Now, I'm happily making dowels that precisely fit my project.
David: yours is the video that Veritas should include with each shipment of this dowel maker! I just received my machine the other day, and have been puzzling over the ever-too-cryptic instruction manual. But now I feel much more confident to proceed! And yes, I am making dowels from exotic wood, so as to make the grandchildren's wooden toys that much more special.
Good idea - maybe I will. By the way - I tried running Purpleheart through the machine to make a dowel - poor results :(. Maybe it was me, or maybe the coarse nature of the wood is to blame. Chips tended to get jammed under the blades and the best result I managed was quite rough. It also seemed that the machine grabbed the wood and pulled it through much faster than I intended. I wonder if Oak would do the same...
That was amazing to watch. It was so great to see how the Veritas dowel jig actually works. Takes away the unknown... I need on of these. Great demonstration Dave. Thanks. 🇨🇦
Dave, Thanks for an excellent video. It was all very well demonstrated and explained. I just received this dowel maker and your video helped me get set up to create mounds of wood shavings in little time. CHEERS!
Great vid! Very helpful and informative. Just received my dowel maker after almost a year of ordering it from Lee Valley. Ran some black cherry through and the dowels came out great! Thanks!
I agree with Josh, great video and you are fun to watch. Far more clear and helpful than the printed instructions. please keep the video's coming, and i'll keep watching.
I have a video here on TH-cam where I make the Rob Cosman style hinge. I make them ALL THE TIME and I could REALLY use one of these things. Great video...the other ones covering this tool are anemic at best.
As a subscriber, I enjoy and learn from your videos, which are greatly appreciated, and this tutorial. Years back, I had to drill surface screws in my wide board flooring, and my brother-in-law tried to convince me that I should be making my own dowel plugs rather than pay the few cents apiece for them at the local box store. Now here, the Veritas cost $350 USD for the kit.Aside from the mess, even if the wood comes from the scrap pile, about how long would it take to make this endeavor worthwhile? It's not about self-reliance, since I am already relying on the technology. (The machine makes the dowels; not like I whittled it myself). Maybe, possibly for 1" stretchers, were I a furniture maker. And we all know there is a really good buck in that racket. I should start building the wheel barrow, to carry the money to the bank.
It's one of those tools that lets you get a very good accurate result any time you may need a dowel in any species and size. Maybe not something that will make you a million dollars but will make you feel like a million! Thanks for watching.
Great vid David. It’s about the only affordable tool out there, at least for me. It’s a lot of setup, I would definitely want to make plenty of the size I am making. Thanks. Will subscribe to your channel.
Another grate video. Thought you might have shown the tweak for 20mm or other metric sizes. I still now want on. Would be great for starting lace bobbins.
Very smooth looking dowels Dave, but it looks expensive and being "Veritas" it probably is?. If you need to make a lot of dowels then it might be worth investing in.
ps - in order to squeeze the most out of a piece of wood, have you tried pulling the last bit of the dowel through the dowel maker? I am thinking to clamp the drill chuck onto the finished end of the dowel
My first attempt went "ok", but will take some practise. The end of the dowel gets crushed a bit, and you have to take care that the chuck doesn't come loose (because you run the drill in reverse). What becomes apparent is that there is a fair bit of wastage due to the tail end left in the machine. No big deal unless you are using high-dollar material.
Hi David, thanks for a great video. Is there any hack to make metric dowels using this one? I’ve been using a homemade jig for years. But this seems a bit more sturdy and precise. Jacob, Denmark
@@DavidStanton it is the out going brushing i’m concerned about, for example 5/16 is 7.93 mm if i want to make a precise 8mm dowel, would it go through the 5/16 brushing? Anyways, i could aleays make a 8mm brushing. :)
@@MrJacobryborg hi did you find a metric conversion chart for this tool? Or any answers about the bushings and if they are ok for metric diameters, i would need 5,6,8,10,12 and 20 mm quite often and i want to be sure before buing it, if i can use it well. at the end the prize is very high . thx for help and info
I just got 5 ft of 5/16 inch purpleheart dowels delivered. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find purpleheart dowels under 1 inch. Had to order from a company that makes turkey calls. I'm going to see how much this sucker costs. LOL
Why did they not make the blade guide the same width as the blade? That way you would not have to hold the blade so the corner touches while you tighten it up?
Dave, your video is very good. You explain things well. But why pay $209+ shipping for a tool that is that finicky. Anyone can build a jig for their table saw from scraps that will make dowels every bit as nice as the ones coming out of that tool.
Hi Berl Mendenhall! I guess the reason I did the video was because it was requested by one of my subscribers. It was a pleasure to work with such a precise instrument.
Thanks for the great video Dave. You are always a joy to watch. Your upbeat and friendly attitude are so soothing and uplifting. Keep spreading the joy of woodworking.
Thanks for the compliment Josh! Tell your friends, lol.
David Stanton will do!

Hey Rob, thanks for that! You should let Veritas know!

Awesome. Outstanding video.

Very helpful demo. I’m using pine to make some arrow shafts, any tips to avoid the feathering?
Not that I know of other than sand paper.
Thank you for the very informative video!! Is it possible to use a "jig" dowel to set your blades?
I'm glad you found the video informative! Yes, you can definitely use a dowel jig to set your blades.

Hey dave i have seen the woodpeckers dowel maker online usa,its nice to.
What is your method for sharpening the front blade?
Cool!!!!!
Thanks!
Hi Dave. I’ve been looking for a good dowel maker that’s capable of various sizes and this looks the goods but I can’t find anyone who sells it.
Hi Setchi Design! Check Veritas and lee valley web sites.
Very smooth looking dowels Dave, but it looks expensive and being "Veritas" it probably is?. If you need to make a lot of dowels then it might be worth investing in.

Hi Jilvan Silveira! It is from Veritas. Check their website.
Why did they not make the blade guide the same width as the blade? That way you would not have to hold the blade so the corner touches while you tighten it up?
To reduce the possibility of getting stuck in the body?

What happened to connecting dust extraction?
Yes! Well, it is a lot easier to show the dowel maker without the dust shroud covering it.
where is Barry ?????
Barry died a couple of years ago.
