Hi Mike. Great video. My 107SL has always had sloppy steering. I figured I would put a new box on it in the future. However, your video prompted me to look at my bushing. My bushing has the same amount of play as your pagoda did. Can’t wait to put a new one in. Thanks!
Another informative video could you do a video on the bosch d jetronic ( electronic injection system) hardly any information on you tube (some in the usa ) fitted to early r 107 other mercedes the working and trouble shooting issue thank for great video well done Mike again
Thanks for your comment. The red 280SL I'm working on is a 1975 and I'll probably do a video on the bosch d jetronic when I come to try and get that car running. Mike
Hi Mike, good detailed video. I have a 1973 R107 450SL. My steering is also making the clicking noise when moving the steering wheel. Do you know where can I purchase the steering box alignment pin. I've search all over the internet and haven't been able to find the tool...Thanks
Hi - I’m not sure where you can get the steering box alignment pin. I suspect that some garages/people might make their own. Maybe ping Pierre Hedary a message or the SL Shop? Mike
Seems like this is the issue with my 380SL. On the 107 I don't think you need to be concerned with lining up the correct spline on the coupler. The steering wheel has it's own splines and can be rotated to any position on the column.
Hi - yes that is true. You just need to make sure that the steering wheel is straight when the wheels point directly ahead. Always mark it because there are many splines and its easy to get it wrong by a spline or two. I've just realised that the splines on the steering wheel of the 280sl I'm restoring are knackered...meaning that the steering wheel doesn't slide on all the way. Mike
@@MikesMercsandothercars Having said that I've just viewed a video by Pierre Hedary who says there's another reason the coupler needs to be aligned. If the steering column is aligned differently than it was then, regardless of any correction installation the steering wheel may seem to remedy, the turn signals won't deactivate properly. Also mentioned was that on some 107 models the coupling bushings can just be replaced, saving quite a bit of cash. But no specifics are given and, unlike you, he doesn't respond to posts. I can't find much online about these replacement bushings though.
@@clifflancaster4693 Hi - I think the bushes are part number A1114620165 they are available from the SL Shop in the UK and maybe also from Mercedes direct. The whole coupler is not that expensive - just over £50 from memory. Mike
@@MikesMercsandothercars One Mercedes dealer told me the coupler as well as the bushings were no longer available, and Mercedes' Classic Car Center never answered my query. But another dealer did order them for about $5 each. Your right about the part number. The coupler itself is between $150 and $200 in the US.
Hi John - I trust you are well? What kind of alloys does your merc have? A friend of mine needs to borrow a set of flat face alloys for a film shoot on Monday. If you get this in time, maybe you could txt me a picture of your car showing the wheels? Mike in Bristol

@@clifflancaster4693 Thanks for letting me know. Glad you got the bushings at a reasonable price. Mike
another excellent video, Mike........ I should have given you my steering box to sort out instead of selling a kidney!!!!

@@MikesMercsandothercars Hi Mike, I’m sorry I missed this. Been training in the Black Forest….. Which involves a lot of alcohol.
I guess I’m too late.
@@Nilfaultfound22 Hi John - all sorted now. Hope you had fun in the Black Forest. Mike
