Very interesting tutorial. I am kind of an old school person, having my Yamaha DX7 MK1 since 1986 and making my own awesome patches every since. I know how I can make sounds on my DX7, but this is the first time I see how you use FM8 to make sounds. It's very different. I can see that FM8 can do a lot more than the original DX7....
That simple delay trick was awesome! In fact, maybe you should do a short video just on that. I've done a lot FX by using simple delay on very short time scales but I've always linked the Left and Right channels. Then you turn the feedback up and it creates this comb filter effect. By changing the Hz in tiny amounts the pitch changes. But still, after fuckin around with Ableton's effects for 10 years I still learn new tricks all the time. I try to approach every tutorial like a Gold Miner patiently searching for that little nugget of precious metal.
HEY thank you man i was just done with 30|30 trial and i had seen alot of tutorials but none told me how to animate parameters from FM8 to Ableton REALLEY THANK YOU
yeah, reggaeton song are great, thanxs for your tips and way to share the divine knowledge of making reggaeton melody, thank you I be following your tutorials now....gracias...
So i've been using massive for a while and i've been able to do some great stuff. After a while though it becomes pretty easy to make those heavy mid range sounds, and I wanted to make something more advanced and complex. I've never really understood FM synthesis before but this video really made it simple. Just had to say thanks :)
@DubSpot At 12:09 when you say you could throw a loop on if you want. You are working with the "D" OSC. You click and it adds another red dot allowing you to put in that loop. What do you click at that point to add the loop in? I can seem to only be able to variate the existing dots that are already there, but I knew there was a way to add more like you did. BTW, I agree that FM8 is overlooked. I've been messing with it lately and there is all sorts of great sounds and options. Thanks!
i have a collection of over 15k presets for FM8 :). but selecting other sound banks is a little slower now, because FM8 has to readout so many files within my custom folder.
Dude, I am at this point now. Massive is great but it's becoming to limited for me. I really wanted to try and understand Fm Synthesis. Very excited for fm8
from what i've watched in a lot of tutorials it seems like once you kind of get the idea of what a basic bass sound is you can really just manipulate it on taste.
@ElectricMoodz yes I totally agree, grouping your synths together and having one just for sub really gets a great sound. Also using corpus to add sub bass is cool too.........
@Senj1n Lack of richness as in armonics? On a FM synth with 6 operators, ext audio modulation capabilities, saturator, overdrive, tube amp, and cabinet emulation? Are you sure that was the definition you were going to? Secondly, the "definition" in lows can be achieved with EQing, making filter feedback, among other things included in FM8. Isn´t trillian sample based anyway?
As I understand FM is actually modulating the phase of the wave, but actual Phase Mod algorithms calculate the modulation differently to FM algorithms, thats why FM and Phase Mod sound different, am I kinda right here?
i would say not the best in terms of creativity and uniqueness (as the title says) but hey at least you explained the features and controls of the synth.. yep but than again no in depth in terms of FM where for example i would love to know and learn more.. I personally often seek these synth tutorials because i try to learn create new pro sounding sounds rich and fat, know what i mean? push it to its limits, try to mimic HW synth with it. I would like to thank you for your effort and keep up! Maybe some guys here think its useles because everyone can create soud like that just tinkering around. you know what i mean... maybe also show us some effecting. (i know dubspot is paid service and not the cheapest one i might add) next point i would like to point out is that whole video is just spinning circle around one sound color i mean nothing changes there.. by infinite modulating one oscilator by another you are not getting heavier/ dirtier sound out of it. From my impression - less modulating more effecting, even a filter there ma would not do damage! Thanks for reading this comment :D. Please dont take it as insult!!! peace ;)
When I for example click osc "F" then go to add an envelope, there are none to choose from, it says "Init" only in stand alone mode can I see/use the envelopes. What's up w/that?
How do you record just the mod wheel? when i try it deletes all my notes as if it thinks i'm rewriting them. please respond as soon as possible, thanks a ton!
This is is an awesome video but my problem is that I am learning that "doing this to that does this" but I still don't really understand how and why. Id like to comprehend the mechanics of fm synthesis so I can be creative with my synth design. Can anyone recommend a good video/article/site whatever?
One thing i dont understand with this tutorial is why bother creating feedback loops in order to make saw waves from sine waves, when you could just change the sine waves to saw waves in the menu?
The DX7 MK2 is the ultimate ambassador of FM. I am trying to show that through my demos. FM8 is excellent at software level. But make no mistake about it. Nothing can fully replace a HARDWARE DX7 MK2 it is on its own.
Yeah, FM8 can make a lot of things besides bell sounds, but it really makes sense for few of them. For me, FM8 remains equal to bell sounds. And Alchemy is better at that. It's fancy though.
That was awesome :D Kinda got bored because you never tried it with the song for the whole video and I was like "It's gonna sound like shit when he mixes the bass up".. Turns out, sounds great xDD
funny so many kids think fm8 is complex because they read it somehwere, .... i find it WAY easier to make a patch in fm8 then in any substractive soft synth ... there's a way to learn things inside and out and it is called a MANUAL. read it ;)
@Senj1n That has more to do with the sound designer than with the synth itself. Do you at least know why it sounds like it sounds? Or you use trillian presets? You know what´s really going on?
that's simple. just create an sound you like. put a chorus or a flanger over it and 2 different lfo that have the same tempo. and the first with a sine and de second with a sawtooth. If you create an envelope that fades between lfo 1 and lfo 2. small distortion maybe. not to much. and just play with effects till you like it if you want to know more. Just PM me
I really wish I understood any of this:P:S Alas, I am but a humble guitar player... Maybe someday synths won't seem like alien technology - maybe o.0 Thanks for posting, at any rate!
@TehUndeadCpt i can make pretty insane yois in FM8 alone with no external effects, anyways, triangle waves are your friend in FM8 for talking basses (NEVER use the wah in FM8, its lazy and makes it sound like shit). anyways, make one operator a sine wave with a .5 ratio, then open another operator with a triangle wave, and feed into the sine wave, and play with your pitch whell, you will already to start to hear formants! send me a message if you want to get in detail.

finally, a guy who actually knows what hes talking about, thank you
Definitely spent the day drinking and watching your fm8 tuts. Awesome job brotha. Really appreciate the work.
The simple delay really adds a great effect! Great tutorial!
Love these FM8 tuts. PLEASE keep them coming! Subscribed!

Dude this is sick..I really wantd to learn how to manipulate fm8 and this helps
What is locking together? (1:24) Quality tutorials, huge big ups, more on reaktor please!
Insanely useful information, thank you!
never understand fm8 well :D thx for the tut guys and for making it free and in HD
" look ma, no filter"

perfect timing, i just got this beauty.
i love you guys. :]

nice love the reggaeton beat at the beginning
thanks, cool and useful tutorial!
can you guys do more FM8 tutorials? Or is there like an online thing that I can pay to completely learn FM8? I would just like to learn it completely.
i have a collection of over 15k presets for FM8 :). but selecting other sound banks is a little slower now, because FM8 has to readout so many files within my custom folder.

@DubSpot How much does it cost? And how much prior experience does one need to have before signing up? And what equipment does one need?
Hi +Dubspot, I love the beats in your video. Can you tell me what beats did you use in this video? Thank you.
This is an amazing video! I'm talking grade A top shelf.
Thanks Shawheen! Stay tuned for more!
Excellent reply. Thanks for that :)

Stole the words out of my mouth, me too. Thanks for this video mate.
@mrevansutton do we need all of the programs in Komplete or can we just choose the ones we want to learn in?
@ElectricMoodz yes I totally agree, grouping your synths together and having one just for sub really gets a great sound. Also using corpus to add sub bass is cool too.........

lol this guy made me learn like 10 things every minute xD (new to fm8)

Hi! May I create ONE sound using two different sounds, like bell and organ?
Tks
Thats a good way to go!
@DubSpot do you offer any advanced weekend/ 1 day courses...im in NYC in a few months and id love to drop in check out dubspot and learn a lil sumsum?
@Senj1n Could you define "cheap"? What is that thing that FM8 lacks? What is that thing that Trillian has that FM8 doesn´t? Define it.
Cheers. :)
When I for example click osc "F" then go to add an envelope, there are none to choose from, it says "Init" only in stand alone mode can I see/use the envelopes. What's up w/that?
love this tut mate!
@DubSpot Like the way he didn't mention the price here. Smart, Dont scare people off
I only get different sounds when I change the ratio and the offset of F and not E. What am I doing wrong??
How do you record just the mod wheel? when i try it deletes all my notes as if it thinks i'm rewriting them. please respond as soon as possible, thanks a ton!
Nice channel, nice tutorials. Man, please make a tutorial of bass of Klaas - Infinity
Please?? Thanks
love fm8
Amazing! Very helpful lessons given by you man!
Greetings from Brazil!
Good tutorial chill deville

hope that helps ;)
were is the tutorial on how to make things louder with out limiting?
One thing i dont understand with this tutorial is why bother creating feedback loops in order to make saw waves from sine waves, when you could just change the sine waves to saw waves in the menu?
How do you Link E and F By clicking I turned on E and F by right click but cant seem to get them to link

can we link the LFO with any osc?
thank you!
FM8 is like Massive?
"look ma, no filter." hahaha

you know what would make you really famous? try to decipher or recreate the dembow loops of reggaeton theres an idea for a next video ;-) your welcome
killer!

thx already done
>real shitty sounding bass design
>17:55 expects us to make a course of his
no thanks
@PatrezzNM LOL i was going to single out that exact same line. You know manuals and tutorials try to make it funny but this guy... he got it right.
Thanks Jim from The Office
Agh! My fm8 is being screwy >:(
I try to turn on sync for LFO 1 and it makes it inaudible; all I hear is the regular sound. [sigh]
That was awful
where is part 1?
that's simple. just create an sound you like. put a chorus or a flanger over it and 2 different lfo that have the same tempo. and the first with a sine and de second with a sawtooth. Sometimes it's can take a few days to make a proper sound to your track. It depends what you want to achieve.
Gotta love digital distortion!
lol'd at this guy's sarcasm
nice
hes about to get real 3:50
look ma! no filters!
@TheArild31 he does indeed
@TheMgmt420 pirate bay or graboid ;) i think i got mine of graboid
@lolitrolUProductions nice input, but i'm a dubSPOT instructor. i'm no dubstep man, that's for sure. way to go.
Ways to find out your sub is too high; listen to the Dubspot introduction and shit your pants.

Skip to 3:41 if you don't care about making bells
Look Ma! No filter!
que buen sonidooo!!! igual me gusta mas sin lfo :p
@lolitrolUProductions no worries dude
fm synthisis is very tricky
@LightWillIgniteUsAll same here dude. mindhive.
It's like a billion and five dollars man.
fuck man, i gotta play with this vst more
Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should
lol this synth sounds like my portasound from the 80s
Unique Basslines? Wobble Bassline? Who would have thought of one of those!?
Jkjkjkjkjkjkjk
I think you went a bit too far out and lost focus.... end result isn't a very compelling bass sound.
I wish I could afford dubspot.... unfortunately I don't shit out cash.
Someone told me that Skrillex use FM8 ?
The "try this and see" style of modeling is not exactly showing that it's a good tool
Should digitally enhance the quality of this old video. I can't see sh1t.
there arent dumb questions... only dumb answers :)
you can make a good bass line like this in fm8
