In the voice of Neo, "Whoa! I know FM8!" Haha, Great tutorial.... I think I learned the basics just watching this... Now I need some intermediate then advance! :D
I have had FM8 for sometime now and have only recently started going deeper into the mechanics of this synth. I kind of figured it out but this video now gives me a vocabulary to work with. My question is this, would you compare the configure function to "Latch" in Logic? This question is open to anyone who can answer (correctly).
@mrevansutton Thanks, i'll definitely look into it. I've been hoping to either take a course for ableton or FM8, but hopefully i'll be able to take both.
Please correct me if i missunderstood but i think fm is called fm because the carriers frequency is modulated by the frequency of the modulators waveform.. in this case it is sounding like a filter opening because the sine wave gets more and more overtones depending on the envelope of the modulator. so first it is a sine wave and after the modulators amp amount is raising the resulting wave is near to a sawtooth
One more question. I noticed in the amplitude envelope that there is a drop down menu with some cool options. I havent been able to figure out how to control those parameters to my liking. I have synthesized some great sounds but they play on even when the DAW is stopped.
Very helpfull. Thank you. I am trying to use FM8 in FL Studio. It works in both pattern and song modes fine . But if I am in the song mode and play what I have already made so far, and try to play the FM8 on top, it does not work. I have this problem when the sound is going through the arpeggiator. Someone suggested to "to set the VCA envelope attack to zero and open the arpeggiator gate (note length) wide enough to let notes through." Where are these controls in FM8? Thank you.
To take the classes in New York how old do you have to be because i am seriously considering on going by the way I'm 16?! You guys are amazing at teaching how to sound design, make tracks and all that good stuff thanks for the vids! :)
Thanks for this video - one question, at 13:53, in ableton, I can't see the 'configure' function within the FM8 which allows you to add plugin parameters. How do I ask ableton to show this ? When I press the > button, I see the FM8 parameters all pop up on the right hand side..
when i morph or use instruments such as the bass guitar for example everytime i hit a key the sound has a different accent. its not just how hard im hitting the key becausae when i put it in arpeggiator mode it still does the same thing. When the melody is played it kind of randomly changes which is EXTREMELY annoying and almost impossible to get the melody down that you want bacause u never no what its going to do. Im sure there is jsut some option that i need to tweak but its tweaking me out
hey DubsPOT.... for new comers this may sound OH soooo cooool... but for us who grew on minimoogs junos and the venerable TB303.... NI's FM7 does not even come close... NIs' FM7 and B4ii are quite cheesy indeed... great demo though.
I keep reading online how you can't record FM8's output to a midi track, even if you disable the synth? Strange it works with Kirnu and some other arpeggiators..
+Dentrag You'll need a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for that. Ableton, ProTools, Cubase, Logic etc. are professional programs that allow you to record your music.
I'm so sad I can't use my FM8 32bit (v. 1.0.3) in Cubase 8.5 64-bit. It only works for a little while before crashing. :( It's my favourite synth that I bought so many years ago and was hoping to bridge in Cubase :(((((
How do I get sound using a midi keyboard. . I press a key no sound comes out but if I use my mouse to press a key on fm8 keyboard it works..Any advice would be helpful I just wanna create some cool sounds
Omg man, you just made a melodic sinus tune with a simple tool that uses microprocessors to produce......... Damn, now nobody's gonna work hard on making music.....
I guess that absynth dutch lead video was made on an off day, if it wasn't for the name at the begininning, i probably would've thought this was a completely different instructor.
ummmmmm what? no. "Fm8 does not use oscillators to modulate the frequency of other oscillators." that is exactly what FM synthesis means, and FM8 (and every other FM synth) does this.
10 years later and this is still one of the most comprehensive guides to FM8 I've ever seen! Cheers! 🙌
Seriously though.. this is the best FM8 tutorial I've ever seen.

You are an excellent teacher, Evan! Keep up the good work.
Dubspot so far the best tutorials ever.
Great video Astrolith - morphing, assigning the controller, modulation, operators, the whole lot. Lots of combinations have opened up !
thanks Astrolith - one of the best FM8 tutorials I have seen !
In the voice of Neo, "Whoa! I know FM8!" Haha, Great tutorial.... I think I learned the basics just watching this... Now I need some intermediate then advance! :D
I've heard people do this so much in songs and kept asking myself what was going on... Thanks for the great tut!!!
you are a legend ! i have a midi assignment and i had no idea how to use fm8 ! that was useful ! thank u so much !
Amazing!!! I needed to learn how to use FM8 and this tutorial knocked it out of the park!
great tut - respect - learnt more watching this vid than hours on my own with FM8
Badass video. FM8 is very overwhelming as first sight
@kylechandler4665 absolutely. The sound design and synthesis course was co designed by me, and spends a lot of time with FM8.
Its amazing how one tutorial like this can explain so much.

Best Tutorial in a long time! More like this!
@mrevansutton Thanks, i'll definitely look into it. I've been hoping to either take a course for ableton or FM8, but hopefully i'll be able to take both.
Though I don't like this style of electronic music at all, I did find this very useful, thank ya!
really good tutorial , this definitely helped me understand fm synthesis a bit more thanks!

How do you save sounds as wav? I use reason 5, so no vst support

Have you configured your MIDI controller in your plugin settings or the preferences in your DAW?
Andres Martinez yes
Now I understand how to create Daft Punk =)
bliss
at 9:58 sounds like something that would be in PAYDAY 2. Nice work man!
Absynth tutorial please :)
FM8 at least for me doesn't work perfectly anymore in windows 7 :/ this is both stand alone version and vst.
Omg man, you just made a melodic sinus tune with a simple tool that uses microprocessors to produce......... Damn, now nobody's gonna work hard on making music.....

Gnarly.
this seems easy than sytrus :D
hey dubspot is that configure feature anywhere to be found in logic pro?
@kylechandler4665 here you go dubspot(dot)com/sound-design
and this is with the sound having no effects
Umm, yeah... If you could go ahead and... just... adjust the portamento time... yeah... that'd be great.
lol thanks!
Oh shit, Jordan fight.
move over boys noize
fuckin a
I feel like this is cheating somehow now...
That skin is way too bright.
