I'm American and have lived in Taiwan for 12 years now and, I must say, it is a truly special place. The people are so genuinely kind and caring and there is such a true spirit of what they call 公德心 or civic morality here. What many may not realize is Taiwan really does have a thriving democracy (complete with a referendum process and high turnout) where the government genuinely works for the people. I can't express how tragic it would be for the Taiwanese to lose what they have here and fall to an autocracy.

Taiwan is also one of the friendliest place on Earth. Everyone who visited always talk about how friendly and kind everyone is living here. It's a truly civil society in the most sincere sense of the word.
Yet due to China, they have no UN seat and no direct diplomatic relations with almost no country on Earth. Everyone has turned their backs on Taiwan, and yet they became almost a model nation with strong, forward looking economy, progressive social trends (first Asian nation to legalize same sex marriage), best medical system in the world, wonder people, and the legendary food scene that is famous in Asia. This is one of the most special places in the world.

Taiwan (ROC) is a country and the CCP has zero rightful claim to it.

I simply cannot understand why both media and politicians confuse the One China Policy. Anyone who understands English (I am Vietnamese) and reads this policy would discover that it is quite clear. On top of this China have already broken the One China Policy so no "tip toeing" around this policy is required.
Now to go through some points directly pasted out of the 1979 China/US Joint agreement document (One china policy):
1: "Neither should seek hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region or in any other region of the world and each is opposed to efforts by any other country or group of countries to establish such hegemony."
The CCP have broken this agreement by claiming the Taiwan Straight and The South China Sea as their sovereign territory upsetting countries such as Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and others. This is illegal claim not recognised throughout the world. The CCP are also disputing several Japanese islands as well. So this agreement is already null and void as the CCP have broken the agreement and are seeking hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region.
2:"The Government of the United States of America acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China."
This sentence does not state that the US agrees with China's position, it simply acknowledges it. E.g I can acknowledge that my friend is a Republican even though my political stance may be a Democrat.
THIS SENTENCE STATES THERE IS ONE CHINA BUT DOES NOT STATE THAT TAIWAN IS PART OF CHINA.
The CCP proceeded to then introduced the "One China Principle" stating "There is only one China and Taiwan is part of China." (as the CCP were unhappy with the One China Policy agreement) but this view is not shared or recognised by the US or many other countries. By not recognising the CCP's One China principle demonstrates that much of the world does NOT recognise Taiwan as part of China.
If you read the policy clearly there is no confusion.
      Now for some stats:
Nearly 90% of people in Taiwan identify themselves as Taiwanese. 4.6% of people in Taiwan consider themselves as Chinese.
27% of people said they are both Taiwanese and Chinese.
50% of Taiwanese would like to maintain the status quo regarding the One China Policy.
39% would like Taiwan to become independent (which they already are).

@@NickvonZ Some more of my work for you only if you feel like more reading. lol (Its pretty long) Enjoy and stay strong Taiwan
First of all TAIWAN is not a province of China and hasn't been since 1895. Secondly there is no reunification with Taiwan. Lets get it straight the CCP and even mainland China have no sovereign claim to Taiwan and I will prove it to you. The CCP distorted version of history is BS.
After being discovered by the Portuguese, it was the Dutch who first colonized the island of Formosa in 1626. When the Dutch initially colonized the island was there a major war between China and the Dutch over Taiwan?? Of course not. This proves that China had no claim to the region prior to 1683. In fact in 1683, the Kangxi Emperor said specifically that “Taiwan is outside our empire and of no great consequence” and even offered to have the Dutch buy it back.
When the Dutch arrived in 1626 most of the population were the Yuanzhumin or Gaoshan people and a few Chinese fishermen who got washed ashore. So please tell of the great battle for Formosa between the Dutch and Chinese in 1626???? There was none. So where is the claimed long history. lol
The CCP claim that Taiwan has been part of China historically yet the Qing dynasty first took control of the West and North of Formosa in 1683 but not the entire island. It was not until 1885 that the island of Formosa first become a province of the Qing Empire. This demonstrates that the island of Formosa was a province of China for only 10 years as Japan occupied the island by 1895. So please explain to me the great long history of Formosa to China?
China claimed only parts of the island for just over 200 years. Some simple arithmetic clearly displays that 200 years of partial occupation out of 5000 years of history is merely 0.04% of China's history for part of the island only. Therefore Taiwan has NOT been a significant part of China's history.
It must also be remembered the Qing government signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, by which it cedes sovereignty over Taiwan to Japan, the fact is that China historically has been a land based power and have no significant history in Taiwan. If it had not been for the escape and invasion of the ROC in 1949 the rightful owner of Formosa would be Japan as demonstrated by the Senkaku Islands still belonging to Japan today.
To further prove my point, when the ROC first arrived most of the locals wore Kimonos and spoke Japanese.
The CCP and mainland China have no sovereignty or territorial integrity of Taiwan and with the CCP's increased intimidation to Taiwan has resulted in increased tensions with many countries around the world. Back off CCP and maintain the status quo as China has no significant historical claim to the island..

The entire show does last 60 minutes, including commercial breaks. This show has been running here in the United States for over fifty years. It was one of the first investigative news programs of its kind, and its format has influenced many similar programs across the world. The ticking clock has been a part of the show since the beginning. The show is surprisingly still very popular here, watched by over 8 million people each week, not including internet views.

Taiwan's military needs massive reform and change. It really is not very good right now. Ukraine has shown that its possible for a military to professionalize itself very quickly. US NEEDS to send military advisors to Taiwan ASAP. military aid similar to how we did with Ukraine should be happening right now. Taiwan is having to wait years for US military goods to reach its country.

The problem is the willingness of the people…. Just to give u an example in Taiwan generally the mandatory military training is only 4 months whereas in Korea it’s 2 years. I’m pretty sure they have been persuaded that US will fight for them or else what’s the point of the Japanese base. Ukraine had crimea as a warning and it won them some very valuable years to prepare not sure Taiwan will have the same so I agree with what u recommend. However there needs to be an urgency among the public sentiment which it doesn’t have…. Similar to the militarisation if Japan. The public does not feel the urgency which is why I don’t think much will change.

Ya, it is amazing how so many criticize the United States - but yet when they need help the first country they call on is the United States. Countries need to learn to take care of themselves FIRST. America will always help democratic countries they are allied with.
But countries need to do better themselves. The United States has given ENORMOUS aid to Ukraine and also a lot of training. It is nice to see it working. I seriously doubt China will invade Taiwan, but if they do they will soon realize that America equipment and American training are superior - the Russians are finding this out the hard way.
America is far from perfect - but without the aid of America most of the world, if not all of it, would be controlled by dictators like they have in China and Russia. There is literally NO other country in the world that can give the money, the training, and the military help America gives.

It really is pretty simple - but the big FEAR of the Chinese government is that more and more Chinese realize that the people of Taiwan have more freedom and more prosperity than the average Chinese does. The Chinese government tries to control everything so their people don't REALLY know what is going on.
Otherwise, it really makes no sense for China to do what they do.

I've been to Taiwan and it's a lovely country with vibrant people who treasure their democracy and civil freedoms. The parallels are hard to ignore between Taiwan and Ukraine - both thriving democracies aligned with more Western mores and values and both threatened by a large Communist neighbor run by a strongman who cares little for individual freedom and feels threatened by what their smaller counterparts represent. I've been to Hong Kong too and the people there reminded me a lot more of the Taiwanese than the mainland Chinese in their culture and mannerisms. It's sad how Beijing has broken its promises to Hong Kong citizens and I wish the UK had never given it back to them. Here's hoping Ukraine succeeds in their war against their oppressor and that Taiwan never has to do the same.
