I revisit this video about once every year. This isn't just an explanation of the timeline, this is a love letter to The Legend of Zelda and its fans. This is an expertly crafted work of art.
When I was 10 this fully explained everything I didn’t understand so I showed it to all my friends I’m 20 now and I genuinely will never forget this masterpiece ❤️
This video has absolutely stunning quality. The CGI hall of chronology, the extremely accurate timeline, the spot on very pleasant narration. 10/10, would love again. Amazing, truly.
Here's a theory, what if the three timelines represent the three aspects of the Triforce. The Fallen Hero timeline represented power. Ganondorf defeated Link and obtained all of the Triforce pieces. Becoming all powerful. The child timeline was of wisdom. Link was sent back in time with the knowledge and wisdom regarding Ganondorf's treachery and so Ganon was stopped before he could start. The adult timeline represented courage. If you think about it, most of the storylines of the games in this timeline was about exploration and discovery. Link and Zelda needed to have the courage to explore and uncover an uncertain future into a new land that is no longer Hyrule. The placement of the timeline also makes sense. Wisdom on the left, power in the middle and courage on the right. But that's just a theory. A game theory...

Once 5:31 hit... I felt that chilling rush once the music came on. All I could think about was hopping on Epona and riding into the sunset with the courageous intent of saving my girl from the forces of evil.
I remember absolutely devouring the original version of this video way back when Skyward Sword had just recently come out. It still fills me with the same sense of awe and childlike wonder that it did then. Thank you for keeping this around and updated, though I do miss the original
Its honestly not outdated, so much effort and care when into this and they got freaking Brandon jones the legend himself to voice the ENTIRE thing. No other Zelda timeline video on yt has this level of production and cohesion. It also isnt interrupted by some annoying on screen persona/avatar with dumb cutaway jokes. This video was made in the good timeline
masterpiece of a video... EVERY Zelda fan needs to see this!! though it makes me wonder when they drew up an official timeline... i dont think it was originally planned this way... though i would love to think it was... that all 3 timelines was planned and that they had a rough idea on how it all played out... when everyone is confused on how to make sense of the zelda series for all those years... Shigeru Miyamoto was sitting in his castle stroking his chin laughing at us....
If you think it was planeed up like this from the begining, you are not the brightest. It is clear gameplay was WAAAAAY more important to them than what sense story made and it was just mashed up at the end due to fans constantly asking for an explanation.
i agree. Zelda should have its own museum - its just that much content. If you've played all of the games I can only imagine walking through it going like wow this is incredible.

I've updated the description with version 1.5 to include The Legend of Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes. A game announced by Nintendo at E3 2015. Eiji Aonuma claims that this is a spin-off game - it is not included in the timeline and it's non-cannon.
Ernie Gonzalez Spin-off does not mean "non-canon". OoA, OoS are both spinoffs, as is PH and ST. The official director of Triforce Heroes said he wasn't sure which timeline it fits in at the moment, but that doesn't mean it's not going to fit in somewhere. Regardless good work with the updates though.
HighPriestFuneral It was released by Nintendo that this game isn't in the timeline. Here's reference: www.zeldauniverse.net/2015/07/01/nintendo-representative-says-tri-force-heroes-is-not-in-the-timeline-of-zelda/
They didn't outline one a few years ago before the release of HH though. The only thing they said in the past was that OoT was the start (which it was, at the time they said it), ALttP follows after, and the last two games on the line are the original Legend of Zelda and AoL, aside from one "duh" moment Shigeru Miyamoto had in 1995 where he claimed ALttP took place after the original games which was already debunked and he quickly walked back the statement. Their mentioning of a timeline has been rather coherent and aside from the Downfall Timeline fans put most of it together long before Nintendo released their timeline, which they had in their possession for a very long time (references to a timeline document go back to early 2000's as I recall right.)
The timeline placement of the latest entry in the Zelda franchise, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been revealed! Check the description for update 1.5 to see where The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is placed on the timeline. Warning, spoilers for Breath of the Wild are there obviously.
Four Swords Adventures takes place hundreds of years after Twilight Princess. Since Breath of the Wild takes place thousands of years (like.. a lot of thousands) after Twilight Princess, this would put Breath of the Wild after Four Swords Adventures, being the latest entry in the Child Link timeline.
What if this is a new timeline where the hero of time stays in the future to protect it which would explain why it the master sword was moved to the woods because if it was put in the temple he would have went back in time.
This is beautiful. I remember playing "Ocarina of Time" for the first time and being blown away by the intro. It was my first time experiencing a game with that balanced with perfect storytelling, music, and gameplay. It's hard to play a Zelda game and not get emotional. This is very nostalgic and I can't wait to get Zelda historia.
BobTehUnicorn There is also a Chain Chomp found in Four Swords Adventures as well! I just beat the game whole game tonight for the first time and saw it in there in one of the Villiage levels! :)
Here's what I love about the 3DS; you can play almost every Zelda game! LoZ (Virtual Console) AoL (Virtual Console) ALTTP (Virtual Console, New 3DS only) LA (Virtual Console, DX version) OoT (Enhanced remake, cartridge or download) MM (Enhanced remake, cartridge or download) OoS (Virtual Console) OoA (Virtual Console) FS (Anniversary Edition, no longer available) TMC (Virtual Console, ambassadors only) PH (DS backwards compatibility) ST (DS backwards compatibility) ALBW (Cartridge or download) TFH (Cartridge or download) The only ones you can't play are; WW, TP, FSA, and SS.
Yes you can if you're an ambassador. You get 10 free GBA games. The only games that are no longer available are Four Swords Anniversary Edition and The Minish Cap as those were limited releases and you can get the latter on the Wii U eShop for $8. Even the Wii U Virtual Console has 2 of the 6 portable Zelda games from the GB/GBC/GBA/DS eras, well the 2 DS games. Also, the Switch can play Breath of The Wild, so there's another game that's playable on the go. So that's 15 of the 19 Zelda games that are playable on a handheld. 14 of which are only on the 3DS (Until the Switch gets VC games, that is) and 1 of which, is only on the Switch. If all VC platforms become available on the Switch, that means 16 out of 19 games, unless Nintendo releases GCN VC games on the Switch (WW, TP, FSA), then it goes up to 18 out of 19, leaving only SS as the only game that can't be played on the Switch, which will probably get an HD remaster in 2021, anyways. So in theory, all official Zelda games could one day be playable on the Switch, maybe in about 3 years.
I've updated the description with the events from Nintendo's E3 2016 presentation. The newest Zelda game has finally been unveiled with a name and a trailer this time - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. No information on it's plot, story, timeline placement or characters has been released yet. Here is the trailer to the brand new Zelda game coming in 2017 to both WiiU and the NX: th-cam.com/video/1rPxiXXxftE/w-d-xo.html
Breath of the wild hasn't even come out yet, fool, the only reason wolf link can come with is because twilight hd came with Amiibo right before so they wanted to reuse it for something
Actually, BotW's backstory has been released. So, Link wakes up from some coma-like state after a (currently) unknown amount of time. (Perhaps he's a Link from an existing game?) and finds that 100 years ago, Hyrule has been completely destroyed by a form of Ganondorf called Calamity Ganon (seems to be like Pig Ganon on steroids), except Hyrule Castle, where Calamity Ganon has been sealed. The seal is apparently about to break, and when it does, the world will end.
I have watched several Legend of Zelda Timeline videos such as this, and this is by far my favorite rendition. I really like that the video discusses the context of when the physical games came out, the history of how people began to connect the dots from game to game, and just how the story unfolds. Instead of just saying well guys there are three timelines and throwing it out, I really enjoyed the tale of how the three timelines were "discovered" or perhaps more appropriately stated. revealed. I also liked how the timelines diagrams and the thorough explanations of how each game related to it's corresponding timeline. So with all of this, I would just like to say thanks to all of you for your hard work, love, and dedication. I hope to see similar content or (perhaps updates?) in the future. Cheers!
Wow this series holds a place in my heart, not many games can. It's like an old friend you've watched grow up beside you. I've even passed the magic on to my son.
I've once again updated the description with new information on the placement of the new Zelda game called Breath of the Wild. Check the description for new information on it! Warning though, potential spoilers for the new game lie ahead!
Has Nintendo officially stated that Adult Link was even sent back at all in the Adult timeline or is that just fan assumptions? To make sense, adult Link would need to have stayed in the adult timeline with Zelda. Similar to the Fallen timeline, this ending simply isn't shown because it's non-canon. If Link goes back to his childhood and prevents the events of OoT that Adult timeline ceases to exist in its entirety so there can be no ongoing history. Therefore there must be two distinct endings. Not one ending equaling two timelines. In the same way that Link to the Past is the result of a completely different ending to OoT.
Not possible. The time 7 years ago directly affected the future 7 years ahead. You could do things in the past that then carried over into the future. They are one. Therefore when you go back and change the child time it prevents that future from happening. Link must have stayed in the future at the end to keep the Adult Timeline intact. Again, remember that the Downfall Timeline dictates completely different ending. Adult is the same. They indicate alternate endings that the player never experiences. The timelines are mutually exclusive. They can only coexist if each takes place in three distinct separate realities.
A series based on reincarnations of well-established characters...so they can basically keep making more and more games forever, extending the lines. Where do the CD-i games fall in? HAHA
+Matthew Brown +PotatoeIsland Guys those games are great but the real Zelda is Zelda Face of Evil and Wand of Gamelon! Its the best game in video game history!!! Better than any Zelda title together!
I'm 100% sure Nintendo is just speaking out of their asses with this "timeline", and making the entire thing up based on popular theories as they go along.
10 years ago??!!!! Dear God I had no idea how long ago this video was made. I'm so glad I can still see it though! A well made and loved video I'll always enjoy watching 😍
As a Diehard Linearist, I despise the very idea of a downfall timeline. I can very easily see one linear timeline. Take the "Official" Timeline: / tWW - PH - ST SS - tMC - FS - OoT -- MM - TP - FSA \ aLttP - OoX - LA - aLBW - LoZ - AoL and make a few changes: 1) Make them easier to read: Pre-Split: SS - tMC - FS - OoT Child: MM - TP - FSA Adult: tWW - PH - ST Downfall: aLttP - OoX - LA - aLBW - LoZ - AoL 2) Fix the problem with OoX placement, due to the fact that: a) Link and Zelda don't know eachother. b) This Link does not look like aLttP/LA Link in official art. c) They want it prior to LoZ, so it can't be after AoL New Downfall: aLttP - LA - OoX - aLBW - LoZ - AoL 3) Assuming Ganon breaks out of the Four Sword (which in all likelyhood he can), this would likely lead to something like the Seal War, meaning Downfall fits at the end of Child. New Child: MM - TP - FSA - aLttP - LA - OoX - aLBW - LoZ - AoL 4) A new Ganondorf could easily rise to power after AoL, and if there is no Hero to stop him, he could take over, eventually causing the Great Flood. Final Timeline:SS - tMC - FS - OoT - MM - TP - FSA - aLttP - LA - OoX - aLBW - LoZ - AoL - tWW - PH - ST
Holy crap the production value on this video is incredible! I always was interest in the Zelda games (unfortunately the only one I was able to play was Awakening), and I was confused by all these theories I saw about the games, all connecting to "the timeline". This video really made everything clear, and was AMAZINGLY done! Thanks so much for making something like this!
Omg I found this video in the related videos and I'm So glad I did, this was fantastically and beautiful made. Great job on this, can't wait to see more :)
Wow... this video is actually really beautiful and well put together! The narration was really great! This is honestly the best narrative of the Legend Of Zelda timeline I've seen/heard! I felt like I was watching a documentary on the Discovery/History channel! lol
Started my NES playing in 1990, TLoZ is what I've been growing up with. I've played almost all TLoZ games (except triforce heroes and hyrule warriors) and watching this video is like I was reliving my childhood and my own life's journey. The music!!! Teary eyes and a warm feeling in my chest. I was blessed to have parents who introduced me into the series back then.
FANTASTIC JOB! (Watching this in 2015) This is really late coming towards you, but OMG this makes so much sense now! All of the graphics in this video were perfect, and I couldn't get over the beauty of the palace shown in between clips of the gameplay. A great big Like from me!
I was looking for this video for days .. Thankfully I understand the Timeline now cuz of your video , the other ones are so difficult to understand , THANKS!
oh my goodness i have been trying to find something helpful to use to help other's understand a little better, this is perfect! people are always commenting on how confusing it can be and asking me to explain and now i can just direct them to this!

Here is the trailer to the brand new Zelda game coming in 2017 to both WiiU and the NX: th-cam.com/video/1rPxiXXxftE/w-d-xo.html
yo thanks for keeping it up to date
Neat that you're still on it. Hearing all the good old Zelda tracks again oh boy... the emotions.
The new Zelda looks impressive btw.
Breath of the wild could be after twilight princess because wolf link exists
Cheers!
I ❤️ twilight princess
****ZELDA UPDATE*** The 18th game in the LOZ Series released March 2017:
Breathe of the Wild
Wow this series holds a place in my heart, not many games can. It's like an old friend you've watched grow up beside you. I've even passed the magic on to my son.
where does the cartoon from the 80s fit in?
what about the CDI games?
Skooter Boy we dont talk about that
GIR no one talks about that ever
GIR well excuuuuse me princess
In hell
This is my favorite TH-cam video series of all time. You did such a good job here
This needs a remake
Irk but add A Link Between Worlds Triforce Heroes and Breath of the Wild
I need a list of every song you use!! I know the song, but the versions!! man I get so many chills from these versions!
If Link goes back to his childhood
and prevents the events of OoT that Adult timeline ceases to exist in its entirety so there can be no ongoing history. Therefore there must be two distinct endings. Not one ending equaling two timelines. In the
same way that Link to the Past is the result of a completely different ending to OoT.

Man, you ranted
Ernie Gonzalez you should make an updated video
Yes, after this new one comes out, please do a new video.
here for nostalgia. used to watch this years ago on a flipphone with miserable quality but it was oh so great
A series based on reincarnations of well-established characters...so they can basically keep making more and more games forever, extending the lines.
Where do the CD-i games fall in? HAHA
Shhhh. We don't talk about that. 🤫😂
@@bluesrike Smart man you are 😂
the production value in this is so impressive
Ocarina of time
I would have to say that tingles rupee rush is the best
+PotatoeIsland You really gonna ignore Links crossbow training like that?
+Matthew Brown +PotatoeIsland Guys those games are great but the real Zelda is Zelda Face of Evil and Wand of Gamelon! Its the best game in video game history!!! Better than any Zelda title together!
I think that link faces of evil is better
JAB No.
I would love an updated version of this video, it is excellently made.
I'm 100% sure Nintendo is just speaking out of their asses with this "timeline", and making the entire thing up based on popular theories as they go along.
This isn't Nintendo's timeline.
8 yrs later this video is still fire
Can I just say... What a beautiful fucking game series.
Yup true af
that was a great video you should have a lot more subscribers based on the quality of your videos. I am subscribing now!
So basically, Spirit Tracks (the Zelda game that people hated the most - to my knowledge) was actually the official ending in the series? Woah..
I KNOW RIGHT
Charlize Torres Yeah lol
Kosovo is Serbia I've never heard of that
Kosovo is Serbia I take back my statement! lol
I loved spirit tracks
and I appreciate the upload. The balance of music that goes along with each Zelda title is very endearing and epic. Can't get any better.
I would like to see a Zelda game set AFTER Zelda 2.
+Conrado Javier 7:46 they claim its Link to the past which is placed after Zelda 2....but that's wrong...
Reggie Joseph Yeah!, Big N Themselves said that LOTP is a Prequel, I want a Sequel set AFTER Adventure of Link.
Conrado Javier Same, but would Ganondorf be alive?
+Conrado Javier so would i
could be interesting i agree
10 years ago??!!!! Dear God I had no idea how long ago this video was made. I'm so glad I can still see it though! A well made and loved video I'll always enjoy watching 😍
I hope Toon Link gets another console game
Frosted Wheat Thins Yes it will be on the Playstayion 472629280...keep waiting guys
Frosted Wheat Thins same Wind Waker is my all time favorite game, just want to see that story expand more
great amazing work on this video! Visual concepts make it that much more entertaining. Reliving childhood again.
YOU DESERVE MY TOTAL LIKE! I loved the animation and the way you explain everything. Congratulations for the video.
As a Diehard Linearist, I despise the very idea of a downfall timeline. I can very easily see one linear timeline. Take the "Official"
Timeline:
/ tWW - PH - ST
SS - tMC - FS - OoT -- MM - TP - FSA
\ aLttP - OoX - LA - aLBW - LoZ - AoL
and make a few changes:
1) Make them easier to read:
Pre-Split: SS - tMC - FS - OoT
Child: MM - TP - FSA
Adult: tWW - PH - ST
Downfall: aLttP - OoX - LA - aLBW - LoZ - AoL
2) Fix the problem with OoX placement, due to the fact that:
a) Link and Zelda don't know eachother.
b) This Link does not look like aLttP/LA Link in official art.
c) They want it prior to LoZ, so it can't be after AoL
New Downfall: aLttP - LA - OoX - aLBW - LoZ - AoL
3) Assuming Ganon breaks out of the Four Sword (which in all likelyhood he can), this would likely lead to something like the Seal War, meaning Downfall fits at the end of Child.
New Child: MM - TP - FSA - aLttP - LA - OoX - aLBW - LoZ - AoL
4) A new Ganondorf could easily rise to power after AoL, and if there is no Hero to stop him, he could take over, eventually causing the Great Flood.
Final Timeline:SS - tMC - FS - OoT - MM - TP - FSA - aLttP - LA - OoX - aLBW - LoZ - AoL - tWW - PH - ST
Bruh
you just melted my brain... that was to complex for me.
Really good work you guys . Keep on doing such good stuff .
"In 1998's Ocarina of Time..."
Shows 2011's Ocarina of Time.
What's wrong with the Original?!
Quality?
And yet he shows the original MM. (Yes I know there isn't a better one but if he could animate all of that...)
Samuel Kyletoft he didn't GT (GameTrailers) did, he just put 'em togther. (my grammar is soooooo bad, i've said that like 4 times in other comments)
I ment GT.
their both the same however the graphics look better on the new one.
This is my favorite thing on TH-cam.
The only game that I never liked was spirit tracks...it's cheesy, and putting a train in there (at that time period) is like, really, come on now.
Holy crap the production value on this video is incredible! I always was interest in the Zelda games (unfortunately the only one I was able to play was Awakening), and I was confused by all these theories I saw about the games, all connecting to "the timeline". This video really made everything clear, and was AMAZINGLY done! Thanks so much for making something like this!
your voice is very easy to listen to.
This video is so well put together. Reminds me of a Disneyworld vacation planning video. Bravo sir!
Omg I found this video in the related videos and I'm
So glad I did, this was fantastically and beautiful made. Great job on this, can't wait to see more :)
Wow, this is a great video. I love your animations, footage, narration, and musical accompaniment. Very well done!
Wow... this video is actually really beautiful and well put together!
Great job on this video!!
great video, loved the game play shots and the special effects you guys made. Zelda is my favorite franchise and im glad i know the whole story now.
I had such a hard time understanding the timeline with zelda, this made it so much easier to understand. Thank you and amazing job :)
Beautifully done "stands up and starts clapping" ...Now to go replay some Zelda games for the 100th time XD
Everybodys talking about the Ocarina and Skyward Sword transitions, but the Majora’s Mask transition straight up melted my heart
Here for my yearly visit because this video is so well put together
oh my goodness i have been trying to find something helpful to use to help other's understand a little better, this is perfect! people are always commenting on how confusing it can be and asking me to explain and now i can just direct them to this!
this was beautiful...well done sir...well done. And Tim Brubaker added a good amount as well....makes a ton of sense now.
Very high quality video. Great work!
This is very well made. Very entertaining with Incredible visuals. Thanks!
I remember watching this 5 years ago and being so amazed by this video,,, it's so beautiful
This is a great video man, very great production. You deserve more than 1,867 subs, keep making videos as good as this and you'll get there. You've got a sub from me though
Well said! Thank you for your time and energy in putting together this well told story.
