    I need approximately 2 rams to break through a city gate. The first one usually gets burned down by the flaming arrows.

    When I got a computer with 16GB ram I thought I would never use it all, then I started writing music on FL studio with a TON of VST orchestra plugins running (like 15-20 loaded at a single time) I have never maxed my ram out but I have gotten close at 12GB used, Next PC I will be at least doubling the amount of ram.

    • @ovonisamja8024
      @ovonisamja8024 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      95TurboSol Yup, music production is a different thing. People even have multiple machines networked so they can use today's big instrument libraries. And ProTools users have a benefit of loading an entire project into RAM, so yeah, 16GB is a minimum today I'd say.

    • @95TurboSol
      @95TurboSol 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ovo nisamja Wow, never heard of networked computers to do that, I don't think I will ever have that epic of a setup but I will definitely be getting more ram at least.

    • @formatta7114
      @formatta7114 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +95TurboSol You only need that much RAM for FL, if you're using sample libraries, like you said. If you don't use insanely large libraries, 8-16 is just fine.
      I plan on using no libraries at all. I went for an over-powered CPU over a ton of RAM, as I prefer to use synths and large EQ chains.

    More is not equal to better. I am reading all of your comments and I think a lot of you are confused on what RAM is for. CPU and Motherboard are the primary components that are going to throttle your performance. RAM is more of an accessory, though a needed one, you can have all the RAM in the world but if it has shit latency its going to throttle you anyways. For gaming your going to be utilizing the the graphic card, specifically designed (GDDR SDRAM), gaming memory way more then the on-board RAM. With music programs you are going to use your CPU to hammer out the calculations more then you need a place to store information which RAM is for. Im not saying you are not going to need a bit of it to get the job done without timing issues but its mainly riding on the CPUs ability to crunch the calculations and get them off the RAM then storing them and waiting for you CPU to deal with them.
    When I was a kid, I found it was best to look at it like the computer was functioning as a cubical. I know its rudimentary but it helped me learn the basics of what was going on. You have your "Worker" who is the CPU or Processor, the "Desk" which is the RAM or Memory and the "Filing Cabinet" which is the hard drive. The faster the "Worker" can do his job the faster he can clear the "Desk". The more RAM the bigger the "Desk" he works at and the "filing cabinet" is permanent storage that can be pulled from and stored to for long term where the RAM is a temporary, but more quickly accessible location (The reason solidstate HDs have a faster read/right is they are essentially based on RAM). More RAM is a bigger "Desk" for storing files being worked on. That doesn't make the worker work faster and it takes longer for him to hammer out the tasks before he can move in more data.
    Basically what it comes down to is everything has a cap and not one component can work at its cap if other things are under-speced to its counterparts. Its always going to bottle neck at its slowest component. That is almost always the Motherboard or CPU. Not saying more RAM cant help in some cases but in most it is a insufficient CPU and though it is a more expensive upgrade you will see a WAY larger performance increase VS the upgrading of RAM.
    Hope that helps alot of your confusion. If your going to upgrade talk to a professional, and I am not talking about a salesman.
    Take Care and Good Luck!

      +Freddie Forskin Lol, Your welcome. It worked for me. Like I said I was a kid, about 8 when I built my first PC. My dad was a Electrical Engineer and explained it to me that way. I went on to become a Computer Repair Tech pretty young and got my BS in IT back in 2001. I don't do it anymore though because innovation is out the window in the fields. Techs are underpaid and professionals replace instead of fix now days. I should have became a Software or Electrical Engineer. Lol.

    • @airjuri
      @airjuri 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +David Schroeder Enough of RAM is enough, too much RAM is waste of money and resources. If your computer doesn't have enough RAM, then it cannot show its full potential :)

    • @davidschroeder21
      @davidschroeder21 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Possible. Though very rarely the case. RAM doesn't use resources other than power. It gives resources. Full potential isn't anything you can get out of the box even with overclocked or high performance products.

    • @TukozAki
      @TukozAki 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah but a wider desk allows to have instant access to all the stuff one often use rather than having to search for (and then store) it in the much slower "desk". E.g. my browser's profile or NAS logs are all in tmpfs (RAMdisk for all Windows® dudes here).
      Beside this you're making a point here. Nice to share your smart kid way of better understanding!

  • @John-shreds
    @John-shreds 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Also Keep in mind of multitasking. I use a vm (virtual machine) for school and having 16gb of ram is necessary for 3 or more VM running. Running more than one demanding task is more realistic than only running a single program. If you have the cash, i say get 16gb. Its always nice to have your computer running smoothly while your busy working on stuff, but getting 8gb is just fine, like linus said.

      The .Reaper They don't respect user feedback or user opinion (the dev team were caught mocking the users of /r/firefox in their IRC channel upon the release of Australis), so they can go fuck themselves. Australis is a joke and a pathetic copy of Chrome. They no longer have any identity. They still haven't implemented Electrolysis (process per tab model already in use in Chrome and hell even IE had it first). Oh, I could go on.

    • @BurdFan
      @BurdFan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nothinglastsforever Maybe I should cut the middle man and use chromium. But then I'd be missing some stellar features added by google. It's a shame, really. Chrome has RAM problems, IE is... IE. Firefox has some layout and design choices that I really don't like, that I feel are really inconvenient. And I'm not planning on switching to opera or safari any time soon.

    • @Nothinglastsforever
      @Nothinglastsforever 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      NaiOni Yep! Chrome has _serious_ RAM leakage problems that they're too lazy to address because it likely only exhibits itself in ~1-5% of heavy power users. Most users with 1-5 tabs open would never notice it.

      As I hold Unity for the day when I start taking the solo game developer path, I am concerned if 16 GB is enough to handle such work, with CPU and GPU to match. Once I have a proper resource pool, I may as well have my first custom PC designed to have one-man game development as the performance max, not gaming.
      I doubt that doing 3D modeling in a 4GB i5 laptop with HD 4000 would do proper treatment, not to mention not having a reliable resource pool, so dabbling in that path is not the right time.

    Crunchyroll is pretty much an USA only site. Otherwise the customer support pretty much ignores you, even when you're trying to give them money. I used to use CR, but I've long since moved onto a different site. The one I'm on has no regional locks, and no ads(in the video. There are some on the page, but that's fixed with an adblock).

    I've been using crunchyroll for about two and a half years now, and I HIGHLY recommend it to anybody that wants to watch anime, legally. They have an incredibly vast selection of anime - that expands rather constantly, often adding in older anime, and the best part of it, in my opinion, is it is legal, and supports the industry.
    It's not gonna be your end-all be all. Sometimes Netflix will have something Crunchyroll has, and sometimes you'll end up joining Luffy for an adventure. But it's pretty damn good, at least.

      I've been using crunchyroll since my first year in college back in 2005! Great website, and the best thing about it is free members can still watch every episode except for the latest one! You only need a premium membership if you dont want to be a week late on episodes basically.

    • @zantoxu6807
      @zantoxu6807 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nemo Nekoi Sometimes. Sometimes not. Don't believe they have any movies.
      You'd have to go elsewhere for those. But CR offers a *lot* of anime, at a good price, and it supports the industry.

    • @rnci
      @rnci 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Joseph Labrier I've been member of CR since Jun 13, 2010 ^_^, that's 4 years and 5 months.
      Anyway.. what I wanted to say is actually if you use free membership you not only can only watch last episode a week later, but you can also only watch 480p and full with ads. (the ads issue can be worked around with an adblocker, but it's a shame for no 720p or even 1080p.)
      LinusTechTips Woot, really happy you chose Crunchyroll as a sponsor, though I doubt you'll see this, in case you do I just want to ask (if you can tell) if it was you/your team or Crunchyroll that contacted you with this sponsorship ^_^

    Right now for gaming, 8GB is absolutely required bare minimum. 16GB is the sweet spot, to be able to run anything well, and still have some left over for disk cache to speed loading further. 32GB is the "overkill, but still nice if you run a lot of things at once". Anything more than 32GB at this point is pointless even taking OS disk cache into account, unless you are running some sort of specialty applications that need that much.

    did you reboot your system between each testing? since the operating system would cache(that is, temporarily store) the file on the ram once it is read, so there would be no difference between using ramdisk/hdd if you don't reboot.
