My first set of golf clubs was a second set of mismatched clubs. I bought them while I lived in Michigan from a thrift store called The Mission. When one of my friends lent me a Ping Zing 9 iron.... ZING!!!!!

I'm with you all the way. I've had a set of Ping Zings for years, and still use them. They mean so much to me that I do preventive maintenance on them each year. They're like an old friend you just don't want to be without. Greatest golf clubs ever made.

Get Sandvik Titanium shafts for these. It was the standard titanium supplier to Ping back then. You'll have a feel on ball impact superior to both steel or graphite + an EXTREMELY rare set of important equipment! Hong Kong, Singapore & Japanese customers offer me +$15,000.00c USD minimum for these when they meet me at Golf courses. Aldila brand titanium can be found also (they supplied Cobra Golf back then).

My Ping Zings were a gift from my wife in 1993 purchased new at the time - 2 - PW with matching serial numbers. To this day, even with "new technology" out there, I gravitate back to them. They are like old shoes, a comfortable and familiar fit. I have been a consistent 12 handicap, but as I approach my 7th decade on earth, I find that while my swing is slower, I just need to compensate by moving up a club length. Soon, I will be eligible for the senior tee box but will still be swinging my Ping Zings. P.S. I am not going to kid you, the 2 iron is mainly for show now or to punch out.

My Dad punches out with his Beryllium Copper (green dot) Zing iron too. He's got 1-iron to lob-wedge! Cleveland "VAS" irons tried to capture market share from Zing in the early '90s, as did McGregor "doctor" irons. Both failed! I'll inherit Eye-2 "Plus Square Groove" irons, the Zings & steel Zing 2 irons (all green dot) from Dad. Steel wool + a standard file buffs away his scratches on these irons. As for my Honma set, one scratch & they're RUINED!

The "winglets" have nothing to do with how the club moves through the air. They wanted more weight on the toe without having to add it on the sole because the ball would go too high, so they added that weight high on the toe.

They are in mint condition, cuz well I take care of my stuff! Haha. Was looking to buy a new set of irons this year, but decided to just re-grip the Zing's and keep 'em! Classic irons! I have a set of ping zings my grandpa gave me. He has always been an avid golfer, and plays around 3 days a week. He has multiple sets of clubs, and I believe mine were given to him by a friend. He didn’t have much use for them since they were too long, he’s 5’1 and I’m 5’9.
Towards the end of middle school I was beginning to outgrow my junior set of maxflis. He took a few shots with those clubs one time we played together and he seemed to like them, and he essentially called dibs on them. Once they were too small for me, he gave me the pings in exchange. His friend had put new golf pride grips on them, except for the 3 iron which is quite slippery & i am meaning to regrip it. My favorite club of the set is the pitching wedge. For whatever reason it’s on a carbon shaft and this gives it such a unique balance of weight.
Because of covid, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen my grandparents and even longer since I’ve golfed with my dad and grandpa. I’m hoping to get a chance this summer.
I wish all of you the best!

My 1st set of clubs were cheap Wilson MBTs I got when I was a teen. I also got a few random clubs from my Grandpa thrown in my bag, like a nice Taylor Made driver I use, and one of them a Ping Zing 1 iron black dot. I found it to be a really useful fairway club, having a similar experience you describe "connecting with the club." Later, I was curious about stepping up my game with fitted set of irons, my fitting proposed standard length with 1 degree flatter lie. I shopped brand new clubs for a bit, putting off such a big investment with indecision on what to get. Then searching ebay, I found a set of red dot Ping Zing irons 1-9 + 3 wedges, clean, with brand new grips, $150. I went for it! I couldn't be happier. They hit really well and really have improved my game. I know there is new tech out there, but most of it seems to boast more distance, which I don't understand- aside from gaining distance in a new driver and fairway wood, for the rest, it doesn't matter! Just choose the club you know YOU consistently hit a particular distance accurately, and play!

I remember when they launched the Zing and that winglet was responsible for the shafts on some clubs breaking so they removed fit for the Zing 2. I love the old Ping clubs - they were so iconic and always stood out with their space age, futuristic design. I think Ping club design lost its way hen they released the i3. I recently bought a set of ISI irons on eBay for less than $150 and they are gorgeous.

Love your story of the 9 iron, like getting your first ever.......... love. I have always loved Ping irons and when I started golfing back in the late 80's I had a crappy box set. Got me hooked though.
Saw these irons on display in the early 90's and I was like, my lord they are beautiful like a super model. I have to have them but they were like 350 bucks and back then that was a ton of cash. Heck, Golfsmith irons were sexy also but at 200 to 250 it was just too much for a new college graduate to afford. All my money was tied up with women.
No matter, I just ordered a used set yesterday. I will have my super model after all, even though she is 30-+ years out of date.

back when the Ping Zing 2's came out went on a tour of the Ping factory (Ping cast their own iron heads back then) ask guide why they came out with the Zing 2 so close to the Ping Zing release...he said they found work ability was not enough in the Zing for top golfers??? I have had Zing 2's since they came out and have gone through 7 different iron sets over the last 20 years always keeping the Zing 2's as my back up set and they still work well, I use the Ping 425 irons as my normal playing irons...they look better and the lofts do make them 5 yards or so longer....

Lee Westwood won a whoooooole lot of tournaments during the height of his career with Ping Zings... i think he may have flirted with #1 on the Worls Sony Rankings with these. If these clubs are good enough technology to do that with with his ball striking then... on those world best courses against Tiger & and many of the best of all time... they can still do that today. All this old tech is outdated and new tech coming out every year is BS. Maybe big improvements on driver heads and shafts making it waaaay easier for tour players to hit it off center, or a bit thin, or cluface a bit open, or clubface a bit closed and still hit the fairway today than it was in previous decades. No one on tour hits more fairways, more greens, makes makes more sand saves et al than the best in those areas 20 or 30 years ago. Only thing that gotten better is distance... not control of the golfball, not short gnme, not putting. For amateurs all this incredible new score lowering tech every year.. and all the new teaching methods with ever beteer computer ball flight analysers.. yet average amateur golf cores never get better, Haha!
I saw Lee Trevino in a clinic one day at about 55yrs old hitting many types of the purest control golf shots that Tiger has never had in his bag (I've been within 20ft of him on the range for long sessions). It was in credible. Unbelievable wing shots, hitting pure 3 woods and drivers after he step on the ball stuck tighty in its own divot. Somebody asked him it was his new design Top-Flite woods that enable him to do that, and whether he could do it with his old persimmon woods he won all those majors with.
