  • A quick look inside the Russian Orthodox church built by Kim Jong-Il in 2006, explained by a Korean priest who studied in Moscow. The church is surrounded by a gate near another monument written in Russian, and mostly serves the Russian expat community in Pyongyang, but is supposed to be a move towards respecting religious freedom in North Korea.

Kim also likes Tridentine mass very much. He is thinking of building a Cathedral for that purpose.

South Korea is more influenced by West Christianity such as Roman Catholic and Presbyterian also Methodist , while North Korea is more influenced by Russian Orthodox Church. If the country practice Free Democracy , i will sure that Russian Orthodox Church will become a predominent Christian in North Korea then other denomination.

Orthodoxy is Eastern philosophy and thought. I think Koreans would have an easier time accepting Orthodoxy than Western Christianity for this reason, even if they have been officially without religion for decades.

@@nmiller4085 Northern part of Korea made a first contact with Russian Empire. Therefore Orthodoxy can easily came to Northern Korea and has a significant number of believers. In History also shown that Christianity was first arrived in North Korea. There are 400,000 Christian in North Korea before World War 1 and World War 2. But after the Korean War, many of this Christian fled South as Communism take over the government.

That's just for show, for the benefit of the tourist.
Pyonyang also has a big beautiful Catholic Cathedral supposedly belonging to the Diocese of Pyonyang, except there is no bishop or priests.

I would say DPRK is totalitarianism, not really communism. However, I am pretty sure that the church is controlled they way they were in the USSR. KJU is not about to let a square inch of the country be out of his control. BTW, I too am an Orthodox Christian.

I really hope this is not just a propaganda item, but it is very unlikely that it isn't, considering that bringing Christian books into the country is banned.

??? You can bring ONE Bible, ONE Quran etc,one sacred book, but not a bag full of holy scriptures, it would have been considered as religious propaganda, which is not allowed, neither is proselytizing allowed.
