Hammer arm is basically a Hammer strike where you use both arm to strike your target hence why every Pokemon shown using the move have both arms glow white.

High Jump Kick is actually an attack with the knee. It's pretty much Pokemon's version of Captain Falcon's forward air. It's named differently from Jump Kick in japanese, it's one of the instances where the meaning got lost in translation

Low Kick (JP: Kick Down) seems to follow more the tripping effect (whether for the old flinch effect or the weight damage bonus), while Low Sweep is focused on damaging the shins (to reduce Speed).

Hammer arm: a blow striking with the same part of the hand as a karate chop, only using a closed fist instead of an open hand. Typically a very powerful strike, but one which can leave the attacker out of position.

So, the thing with a move like Vacuum Wave is that it's based on the concept of the vacuum palm, in which a trained fighter can create a largely airtight space in the palm of their hand, allowing them to pick up a heavy object without actually applying their grip. It doesn't explain much about how they can send this force outward, but the technique is an actual concept.

Final Gambit might be based around the idea of a so-called Master Blow -- a single strike that is designed to end the fight before it really starts, by basically using all the energy the fighter has to fuel it. As the pokémon HP stat is implied to be something akin to combat stamina/endurance, it makes sense that it, like explosion and self destruct, literally causes the user to pass out when it goes off -- the move literally burns all the user's energy, and they pass out, unfit to fight.

I always figured mach punch was really just a quick jab like you'd see in boxing: Not meant to do damage, but to soften up the opponent and break their guard down for stronger hits. That's why mach punch has low power but compensates for that by being a priority move.

I think Drain Punch makes a bit more sense if you view it as a punch that can sap the ki/vitality from an enemy rather than their life essence.
In most depictions, everything has an aura/ki/vital spirit, so even if it doesn't use it the way a skilled fighter does, it can still be targeted directly with this move.

The German name for the z-move is "Fulminante Faustschläge", which roughly translates to "brilliant fistpunches". It's always amazing and amusing how different the translations are from each other.

One thing that you kinda handwaved was Low Kick vs Low Sweep. In martial arts, a low kick is a kick aimed at the legs to hamper your opponent's mobility, while a sweep is designed to knock them off of their feet and let gravity do its thing, making it more effective against heavier fighters when successful.
They both do exactly what the other move is supposed to do! I know it's a little detail, but it's bugged me ever since I noticed the connection!

    New Fighting Type Moves -
Adrenaline Surge (Status): The user's adrenaline surges, restoring its HP and raising its Attack and Speed (one stage each), but lowering its Defense and Special Defense (one stage each).
Blocking Throw (Physical): The user moves into a falling position, avoiding damage by grabbing and throwing Pokémon that target it with direct moves with the power of the moves used. If no Pokémon targets the user, its Defense harshly drops (two stages).
Tag Team (Physical): The user strikes its target before tagging out, switching into a party Pokémon in waiting that then attacks the target as well.
Grapple (Physical): Grabbing the target, the user holds it close and pummels it mercilessly. This also harshly lowers the user's Evasiveness, however (two stages).
Pregame Stretch (Status): The user gets in some quick stretching exercises to sharply boost its Attack and Speed Stats (two stages each). This move can only be used on the first turn the user is in battle.
Kinetic Thrust (Physical): The user throws a forceful punch that launches a wave of pure kinetic energy at its target. This attack does Special Damage.
Duel (Status): The user challenges its target to 1-on-1 combat, preventing both itself and the target from escaping until one of them faints. During this time, both the user and the target only can use Attack Moves, and they both are unaffected by moves of other Pokémon in battle.
Honor System (Status): The user enforces an honorable battle based solely on the skills of the battlers. For five turns, all factors such as Stat Changes, Status and Weather Effects, Hazards, and Critical Hits are negated.
Warmup Stretch (Status): The user stretches its muscles to prime itself for the upcoming battle, raising its Attack, Speed, and Evasiveness (one stage each). It only works the first turn the user is in battle.
Focus Break (Physical): The user smashes into its target with a shattering bodycheck. This move ignores factors that would prevent it from being able to knock out its target in a single hit (Sturdy, Endure, Focus Sash, Focus Band).
Parry (Physical): The user prepares to intercept its target's move, dealing damage to the target and reducing the damage it takes from the move. This move will fail if the target isn't preparing a damaging move.
Capoeira (Physical): The user strikes everything around it with a frenzied dance of spins and kicks.
Pushback (Status): The user holds its ground and braces itself for an attack. In addition to protecting the user from attacks, this move also forces any attacker that makes direct contact out of battle.
Headlock (Physical): The user grabs its target and wraps its arms around its head to impede its movement, lowering its Speed (one stage) and possibly causing it to Flinch (20%).
Guard Press (Physical): The user sturdies itself and crashes into its target. This move's damage is calculated using the user's Defense Stat and the target's Attack Stat.
Muscle Flex (Status): The user proudly flexes its bulging muscles to intimidate its target and pump itself up. This lowers the target's Attack Stat (one stage) while raising the user's own Attack Stat (one stage).
Somersault (Physical): The user rolls into its target to inflict damage, getting more skillful with each hit. Hitting a target raises the Attack Stat (one stage).
Title Match (Physical): If the user's HP is half or less, this attack will hit with double the power.
Powerslam (Physical): A two turn attack where critical hits land more easily. This may also make the target Flinch (30%).
Body Check (Physical): The user smashes into the target with a full-body tackle that may make it Flinch (20%).
Choke Hold (Physical): The user grabs its foe around the neck and holds tight for four to five turns.
Gloating Punch (Physical): A punch that, if it knocks out a target, will also sharply raise the user's Attack Stat (two stages).
Seek Opening (Physical): The user looks for an opening and attacks its target, bypassing its Stat changes.
Tàijíquán (Status): The user calms itself through serene poses, restoring its lowered Stats to normal.
Stretch Kick (Physical): The user kicks with a massive force from a long leg.
Focus Terrain (Status): The user infuses the ground beneath everyone's feet with qi for five turns. Pokémon on the ground have their Accuracy and Critical Hit Ratio boosted (one stage each).
Roundhouse Kick (Physical): The user unleashes a powerful spinning kick that strikes every Pokémon around it.
One-Two Punch (Physical): The user strikes its target once to lower its Defense (one stage), then again to take advantage of the opening.
Focus Aura (Status): The user focuses and channels its aura, raising its Attack, Special Attack, and Accuracy (one stage each).
Pressure Hold (Physical): The user gets a hold of its foe and holds down a vital pressure point to knock it out. The target faints instantly if this Attack hits.
Sweat Guard (Status): The user begins to sweat profusely, making its body slippery to avoid damage from direct Attacks.
Force Throw (Physical): The user hurls the target back into its Poké Ball with a powerful throw that forces both of them to switch out.
Sleeper Hold (Physical): The target is attacked with a hold that may leave it Asleep (30%).
War Dance (Physical): The user lets loose a wild and frenzied war dance, attacking for two to three Turns. It then becomes Confused, however.
Roughhouse (Physical): The user lets loose its pent-up energy by roughhousing with its target. This Attack never Misses.
Avenge (Physical): The user avenges its fallen allies. If an ally fainted in the previous turn, this move becomes more powerful.
Piledriver (Physical): The user attacks its target with a full-power piledriver. The Attack's recoil harshly lowers the user's Attack Stat (two stages).
Vengeful Strike (Physical): The user takes revenge for its fallen comrades by attacking its target in their honor. The more fainted or Status-afflicted party Pokémon, the greater the number of attacks.
Suplex (Physical): A Two Turn Move in which the user lifts its target on the First Turn and then slams it over its back to the ground and drops onto it on the Second Turn. This move's Power depends on the Weight of the user and its target. The target cannot Attack while Lifted.
Heartbeat (Physical): The user's heartbeat quickens to such a pace that it shakes the ground to Attack everything around it. The effort wears out the user and lowers its Speed (one Stage), however.
Smash Kick (Physical): A firm kick into the target to deal Damage.
Grand Finale (Physical): This Move can be used only after the user has used all the other Moves it knows in the Battle.
Aura Storm (Special): The user concentrates its Aura into a swirling vortex to attack its target. The lower the user's HP, the higher this Move's Power.
Pummel (Physical): The user's rage peaks, and it rushes to its target to beat it down from point-blank range. This Attack's Recoil harshly lowers the user's Defense Stat (two Stages).
Gloves Off (Status): The user casts aside its Item to Battle more seriously, reducing its Weight, raising its Attack (one Stage), and sharply raising its Speed (two Stages).
Concussion (Physical): The user concusses its target with a blow to the head. If the user's Physical Attack is higher, this Move will be Physical and Fighting Type, and will lower the target's Attack Stat (one Stage). If the user's Special Attack is higher, this Move will be Special and Psychic Type, and will lower the target's Special Attack Stat (one Stage).
Disarm (Physical): The user deals a sweeping blow to disarm the opposing Pokémon. This also Lowers their Attack Stats (one Stage).
Rope Down (Physical): The user traps and squeezes its target for two or three Turns, rendering both unable to Move for the duration.

That is not how a reversal works. A reversal is taking an attack from your opponent and then keeping their momentum and turning it back on them while adding your own, on top of it. This is applicable to a lot of strike and mostly throws such as the Judo throw and hip toss. Its more of of an opportunist approach, turning the tables after the opponent got the upper hand.
I know where you were going on about there, but in real martial arts, that's a thing. I agree with everything else though.
Though the vaccum wave, you really thrown into disbelief about that when pokemon can learn moves that have them move so fast they create after images such as double team? But they can't move something so fast it creates a vaccum?

    • @TriforceChad
      @TriforceChad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

In order to achieve a vacuum out of a negative pressure zone, the object would need to be moving at around Mach 7, which I guess is possible when Pokémon are fast enough to make after images with double team, but I think the move has more problems than that.
The way the move is described in game uses the phrase “pure vacuum”, which is only a theoretical possibility and would require MUCH more than Mach 7. On top of that, it “fires” the vacuum across the battle field to hit an opponent, which isn’t even a theoretical possibility, the vacuum would just fill itself in

    • @kaiceecrane3884

Counter would be more akin to what you are describing than reversal. Reversals are a things, though, in grappling more specifically. It is when you go from a bottom position to top position. Counter is when you do as you mentioned. A counter is when offensivly take advantage against your opponents offense. Reversal in context of pokemon I'd say is that trope thing

Your assertion of why a kick to the shin hurts so much isn't entirely correct. The pain doesn't come from a proper nerve being compressed, but rather from the periostuim, which is a richly innervated tissue surrounding bone. In fact, like the brain, liver or kidneys, you don't really feel the organ itself, but rather the tissue that surrounds them, and that's why you can find people with serious issues in those organs, like tumors or parasites, who don't feel a thing but others with smaller injuries, like bumping your shin against the table, feel a lot of pain

Low kicks arent blows to the shins, they're Charlie horse like blows. The martial artist will hook the opponents legs with a low sweep. And toss them. These moves can also be used with throws that resemble judo. The fact that these moves use the opponents weight against them are why this attack does more damage depending on how heavy the opponent is.

The thing about Vacuum Wave... Here is a short narrative to accurately depict what I'd imagine it to be.
A young Riolu with an outstretched paw concentrates on the target before him. As his feet press further into the dirt and his eyes narrow forwards, a gale begins to encircle his arm, only growing into a faster tornado as he continues channeling. Soon after the wind closed around his fist, the Riolu is ready to discharge. With a powerful blast that only had enough recoil to slide him back a few meters, the spiraling vacuum is launched in front of him; the instantaneous gust sent his Torchic partner sprawling.
Thankfully the blast didn't injure the Fire-type too much. However, he only decided to sit up. "I... think that was Vacuum Wave, Riolu," he chuckled. The Torchic gave the Fighting-type a wink despite his pain. "Keep it up," he told him.
