best video I have seen for setting duel rates as I need to do that for operating special functions on a tamiya MFU truck control unit as it dose not see digital trim switches, and your video and explanation of each step has suddenly made it clearer and I now feel less of an idiot for not understanding how to set duel rates

Joshua? I'd always put the expo into the model in once place if I can. That way if you change it then you don't have to find the other places you've set it up to make it the same. Also, by using the inputs you can use flight modes to set up the model too..
Sorry PainLess I had too many pages open....my bad :) I appreciate your response. I did in fact go to the Inputs page and apply expo and it seems to be working. Great article :) However I was wondering, if I wanted to reduce the sensitivity of my quad by setting up dual rates/expo, would I do that for all 4 channels or is setting it up on the throttle generally frowned upon? I wouldn't set rates but I do usually add a little curve to the throttle to flatten out the hover-point and add 'an expo' to throttle for newer pilots. Lots easier to hold the hover like that.. Hope that helps..
Newbee question. Why do you need the switch condition on line 3, the elev low rate. Surely if "SB up" is not active, the next line, low rate, automatically becomes active as does any other position of switch SB.
I am using a T12 Pro. Sometimes when I am setting exponential values (maybe rates as well), the number changes to G1, G2, G3 etc instead of 1, 2 ... 99. I am now thinking that this occurs when I press and hold Enter on the value field instead of giving just a quick press of Enter. But maybe not. It is always difficult to get back to 0. Do you know what is going on here? I Googled OpenTX G1 G2 G3 without success. I wondered whether these are Global values that can be set somewhere, so that for example standard rate values and exponential values can be set and applied either across the whole model or maybe even all models - although the latter is a scary thought!
I'm guessing that it is short for GV1 etc. Global variable are a way to change the value of something dynamically in the radio. See my Opentx mix school for how it works. I don't have a T12 here but I expect that you can press the enter key to change from a descreete variable to a GV and back again... Best of luck
Hi thanks for the awesome video, I have a question. I notice that when we insert exp for the input page it doesn't associate with the output page "curve" selection (with the reverse, subtrim functions) does it matter ?
Thanks so much for these videos. I had no idea this radio is so versatile. I will finish the set. I am looking or a radio, and this one,, for the price, is a bargain. Please keep up the good work! Thanks,, Rick
Thanks and used your guide on my X7 - works perfect! ...remark for you; I assigned it to a 3 way switch, top & middle, but when i put the switch in the low position you get no outputs at all anymore and can be tricky while flying - so i assigned low rates to the other 2 positions, dont want to get any issues while flying. Regards, Floris
+MileageMayVary you can add a setting to the switch you're using if you want to use a three position switch or use the ! mark.. see our video on that..
Using dual rates on my Eachine wizard x220s I set the switches up just like you did but i set up for 60 80 and 100 and it seems to be working fine I haven't stepped up to 100% but it seems to be working good if you set up for a plane of some sort well that works fine for a quad as well
Companion is handy for showing mixing tips and tricks though ;) I can navigate through the menus far faster on the radio as that is what I am used to and I always have the menus at the field.. Happy flying!
Great video tutorial. I am new to the QX7 and used this video to setup dual rates. One thing I noticed during testing is that if dual rates is setup on a 3 position switch, SB in this case, and the switch is put in the fully forward position, SB↓, there is no output to the servo's i.e no control ! This could happen accidentally. Is this correct or have I missed something ? I have copied the dual settings from SB- to a third position set as SB↓. This will eliminate the problem. Again thanks for your tutorials.
You may have noticed me asking a few questions on a few of your videos. Let me assure you the only reason is your videos are simply the best source of information out there. I really appreciated that you took time to answer all of my questions. Another question, is it possible to setup expo on cc3d? You did mentioned other FC but did not mention cc3d, which is why I want clarify.
Great Taranis video. Very helpful in demystifying this superb radio. I, like you am a Mac user. However, I noted that you often use a PC Netbook when interfacing with the Taranis, such as adjusting firmware. Please talk a little about the pros and cons of using a Netbook in place of Mac OS or running Windows on your Mac.
Been watching your videos, I am a subscriber and I think they are great. I would like to know, I am setting up two Taranis radios, one as a instructor, one as a student.Channels one through four are no problems as they are already dialed into the instructors radio. I am trying to find out how to configure channels five through eight or five through 16 to get them to work on the student radio if you have any information on this I would greatly appreciate it. thank you
Another fantastic explanation of the workings of the Taranis, I've in the past only stumbled onto getting things to work, you've shown me why and how. Keep it up. Can you show how to manually set up throttle hold please? Many Thanks.
Hey dude, ive watch all your videos on this radio it is very helpful, however how can you get 32 channels out of the radio as the spec says for the radio 16-32 channel, many thanks
I have just tried this on a Taranis OpenTX 2.3.7 via the companion and for some reason it seems to invert the input, i.e. 100% at switch position SB-, and 60% at switch position SB-back. Repeating this on the Taranis directly gives the expected result!
Sometimes you find that Companion has a few 'features' that get fixed in the next version - usually! Always good to check it works the same on the radio... Happy flying!
I know this is an old comment but hopefully it will help someone. If you choose the option with the exclamation point in from of it, it will be inverted. i.e. !SB↑ instead of SB↑
I have just realised that I have set up dual rates on the Mixer tab rather than Input tab. I guess because this was in the Mixer set of videos. It appears to work, but are there disadvantages that will come back to bite me?
Not really. It can be handy in more complex setups to do it on the inputs then that new rate is used in all the mixers that it appears in but I usually set them up in mixer here... Happy flying
Hello your video's are awesome and help a great deal. I have just recently purchased a taranis 9dplus and its takes a little bit getting use to. So my question is my thr kicks when my stick is at 50% i cant seem to find the sub trim if that is where it needs to be adjusted. I love this tx and hope i catch on. Thank you very much and you really give great instructional videos
Hi, I was going through this setup (in Companion) and noticed that when assigning rates to a 3 position switch you have to use all three positions. I followed your example and found that when I accidentally moved the switch SB into the third position the simulator showed no elevator control at all. I rectified it by duplicating again and repeating the mid position values for the down position. Do you find the same or am I doing something wrong - Cheers Peter
You are perfect as always. I have one question. Can we assign only one switch for all the surfaces such as ail, ele, rud or only 2 surfaces like ail, ele.? Rather than having different switches for different surfaces. U know as there are several models on my taranis so sometimes its confusing to find which switches i have assigned. I hope u understand whT i meant. Thanks.
Yes you can. One switch can control many hangs at the same time. See the other videos in the OpenTX Mix School for a series designed to teach from the very beginning..
Painless360 Thanks a million sir. I just tested it and yes i can use one switch. And Thank you for the awesome work u do for us. And Thank you for the in depth detailed videos.
Lee In Open TX on X9D, I have been trying to have a switch tell me what the value of the Elevon mix is set to. I.E. When I move SF I want it to say Expo On (I have this part set up) followed by saying Dual Rate 60% (or what ever value it is set to). I sure would appreciate your help with this.
Hi, I've been informed that with Taranis you should setup Rates and Expo on the Input page and not the mixes page. I understand what Rates and mixes do, but I don't understand why you cannot set them up on the mixes page as the option is there to do so. A friend said that if you do set rates up on the mixes it can cause problems with trim settings when in flight but I don't see how, any chance you can either explain or point me to a relevant video many thanks
With the Taranis and OpenTX there are lots of ways to do everything and there are better and worse ways depending on what you want to do. As the best practice has developed for OpenTX I'd put Expo and Rates on the inputs and then use the mixer or output screens to adjust travel, sub-trim and reversing. See my OpenTX plane setup videos for a full run-through..
Hello and thank you for your hard work delivering all this great information on the taranis. Im not sure Im in the right place to send you a message but if you could do a video on how to use and program a gyro for use in a fixed wing. I have a plane that is very rudder happy on the ground and taking off from a paved runway I find myself having to really fight the torque and pfactor during takeoff. I installed a gy401 gyro and tried using rate mode to aid in staying straight. I just need to make sure that I have my settings correct and if rate mode or heading hold are the best option to use. thank you again for all the info.
Hi Painless 360, I have set up my Taranis to allow me to use expo and dual rates at 75% at medium rates and also 50% at low rates, at 40% expo and even though Open Tx Companion shows this on the eeprom when I save the settings to my tx these changes do not register.I have the latest firmware (2.0.17). In the Input tap I have the source as Ail, weight at 75, curve at expo, gv at 40 and the switch set as SA-. What could I be doing wrong. I have compared these settings to my other models but cannot notice any difference. Can you please help.
I have latest Companion 2.3.14 - when I try to Simulate new model Inputs get error message ....Simulator for this FW is not yet available !!?? why ...joe
Lee I have a question about the expo settings in inputs, when I long press enter on the curve -> expo number I get GV1~GV9 setting. What does that mean?
Those are Global Variables and allow you to change the setups dynamically using settings that can be adjusted by allsorts and used in many different other places. We have a video on them and use them a bit in the 'Mix School' videos. Best of luck!
I've tried to use the SA & SD 3 position switches for Triple Rate can you confirm this is possible Also the simulation screen action of pushing up or back of the switches corresponds to down or forward switch direction on the Taranis can this be changed...joe
Hi I just picked up my Taranis and was trying to set up the expo to be less on up elevator and more on down elevator. Is there any way to do this? On the 9xr it was pretty simple butI can't seem to figure it out here.
If you have a short wing that is kind of quick they tend to be a little pitch sensitive especially with down elevator (gravity helping). A little more expo on down smooths out a high speed pass and less up expo allows easy maneuverability. Also my thumb seems to have more control dexterity at the bottom of the stick so softening the top helps. I did figure it out though, I added a mix and used the Side function x< or >, with different expo values. This seems to work but was hoping there was an easier way. Thanks for the response and great tutorials!
My Devo 7 radio has a setting called Fixed ID. Its a safety so If I forget to change model in in the radio It won't link up. Say I'm flying 600 raptor nitro heli. and after that fly my 51 AJ slick. and forgot to change models in my radio it won't link up.
What do you do if, at no matter what weight you set, the graph, the monitor, a meter I built like yours and the elevator, and other controls, all travel the maximum distance. Thank you, for the great tutorials. The best.
Very nice video. However, you should have setup switch B's forward position. If you were to move switch B to the forward position you would lose elevator function.
Curtis Adams Not only do you lose the function of the stick but when you set the switch to the unassigned position it holds the input at the value of the stick throw. If you had, say, right rudder at about 50% at the time, the rudder will get stuck at right 50%. At least it does on my Taranis + with the stock firmware. A rather surprising and potentially disastrous default if you accidentally knock the switch when flying. So you should either assign the third switch position to get triple rates which is effectively this logic... if( SA^ ) { //if switch A up high rate }else if ( SA- ) { //if switch A center medium rate }else if ( SAv ) { //If switch A down low rate } or use the NOT switch position (!) to use all the positions eg SA^ for high and !SA^ for low which is effectively this logic... if( SA^ ) { //if switch A up high rate } else if ( !SA^ ) { //if NOT switch A up low rate } or set up an input default. The "lines" for the input get tested in order, top to bottom so if you assign the first line to SA^ you can use --- for the default second line. You have to have two lines. You then have this logic... if( SA^){ //if switch A up high rate } else { // otherwise low rate } One other point is that it is not necessary to hold the stick at full throw to switch between the rates. I think it just being done in the video to show the programmed throw on the channel monitor but it's a bit misleading.
I assume there is a pitfall to be avoided here: In this setup, the third switch position will disable the input altogether, will it not? If so, I would never leave the third position undefined. Either setup a third rate, have the middle rate active two positions, or use a two position switch.
I love it how you keep it simple when explaining. Thanks for the video. I learned a lot again as a beginner. I have one question. When i hit the switch to the edited expo and dual rate of my aileron it doesn´t work. The aileron doesn´t move.
Then something isn't right. If you get into these kinds of situations then add each piece of the mix, one at a time, until you find the one that breaks it. Easy to miss one little piece that causes it to misbehave! Best of luck!
On your Elder on elevator you made one switch to set at 60% and the other one at 100%I set up three switches at 60 80 100%because I'm so new I don't want to tear my first drone up and the switches seem to be working just like you showed in the video
+Billy Collins I wouldn't use dual rates on a quadcopter, use the different modes like angle, Horizon etc if you're getting to grips with flying the model. Happy flying exclamation mark
How do increase rates through the transmitter? I'm using the Tiny Whoop simulator from FPV Event and the settings can't be modified yet and rates are too low.
+Dustin Johnsen I'm not sure, we don't have an official tiny whoop here and I'm not sure exactly how the rates change on it. Do you mean that the controls arent sensitive enough ?
Yes. Just for the simulator. I'm sure setting changes will get implemented later on down the road but didn't know if rates\sensitivity could be increased through the transmitter.
No it's a fixed wing, I set the trims in low rates, and it fly's hands off but flick it to high rates and it's way out of trim again. Just seems I have to trim it for all rates.low mid high. I put it down as a qwerk of the Taranis.

Using dual rates on my Eachine wizard x220s I set the switches up just like you did but i set up for 60 80 and 100 and it seems to be working fine I haven't stepped up to 100% but it seems to be working good if you set up for a plane of some sort well that works fine for a quad as well
Great,thanks.
I never bother with companion, prefer to do everything on the radio.
Companion is handy for showing mixing tips and tricks though ;) I can navigate through the menus far faster on the radio as that is what I am used to and I always have the menus at the field.. Happy flying!
thanks for the great videos they have been very helpful for me and my taranis!
Glad they have helped! Spread the word! Happy flying..
Use the ! Setting, see the video on it in the OpenTX mix school playlist.. best of luck!
Great that’s it, knew I was missing something. Using the !SB is the safer option, thanks again.
+Jack Truong yes it is. Don't forget Patreon is there ;)
Great Taranis video.
+Escape Velocity I don't use any Mac products so don't have the experiences, sorry. Happy flying!
Video helped me today, thanks.
What is the difference using the same techniques in the mixer or output pages vs input page? If none, why three different editing pages?
+stephen st.clair you can do things in the Inputs you can't easily in other places. Have a look and you'll see..
Been watching your videos, I am a subscriber and I think they are great. I would like to know, I am setting up two Taranis radios, one as a instructor, one as a student.Channels one through four are no problems as they are already dialed into the instructors radio. I am trying to find out how to configure channels five through eight or five through 16 to get them to work on the student radio if you have any information on this I would greatly appreciate it. thank you
Please see my video on setting up the OpenTX trainer function. That’s the only detail I’ve figured out. Hope it helps..
your video's are so helpful. Thank you so much!
Another fantastic explanation of the workings of the Taranis, I've in the past only stumbled onto getting things to work, you've shown me why and how. Keep it up.
Can you show how to manually set up throttle hold please?
Many Thanks.
Loads of extra videos on the playlist . This one might be of interest ;) th-cam.com/video/0ZsZHWOvvuo/w-d-xo.html

Like your videos, I would like to know how to do dual rates and expo on elevons. Can't seem to get it. Do you set the rates on inputs or mix page?
+TheDuncandan setup on the inputs. Best of luck!
+Painless360 Worked like a charm, Thank you Dan
@@Painless360 Thank you for your prompt reply.
Thank you! Very helpful!

NIce tutorial. Would this work if using it as teacher to the student radio DX5e? or does it depend on the student radio?
Thanks
Alex
Should work.. Best of luck
@@Painless360 so if i set teacher radio with 30 % expo, when fli switch to give control to student radio....the student will have also 30% expo?

Awesome video. Thanks!
+Erich Ristau if you mean that the throttle only starts moving when above 50%, then I check the stick calibration. Best of luck
Painless360 thank you i will check that thank you for the quick reply
Merry Christmas
Exactly what I wanted to know. Thank you !!!!
No, that is right. Watch the video on 'Explaining the Exclamation ' to see why and how it works like that..
Painless360 Thanks for that, So much information I missed that one. Got it clear now. Great work thanks
Do you mean you need it to speak a set number?
Yes - So if I have a 3 position switch set for Dual Rate (100% 75% and 60%) the radio will say the value I have it set to. I am loving my X9D.
Hi, I've been informed that with Taranis you should setup Rates and Expo on the Input page and not the mixes page. I understand what Rates and mixes do, but I don't understand why you cannot set them up on the mixes page as the option is there to do so.
A friend said that if you do set rates up on the mixes it can cause problems with trim settings when in flight but I don't see how,
any chance you can either explain or point me to a relevant video
many thanks
With the Taranis and OpenTX there are lots of ways to do everything and there are better and worse ways depending on what you want to do. As the best practice has developed for OpenTX I'd put Expo and Rates on the inputs and then use the mixer or output screens to adjust travel, sub-trim and reversing. See my OpenTX plane setup videos for a full run-through..
@@Painless360 many thanks
Hello and thank you for your hard work delivering all this great information on the taranis. Im not sure Im in the right place to send you a message but if you could do a video on how to use and program a gyro for use in a fixed wing. I have a plane that is very rudder happy on the ground and taking off from a paved runway I find myself having to really fight the torque and pfactor during takeoff. I installed a gy401 gyro and tried using rate mode to aid in staying straight. I just need to make sure that I have my settings correct and if rate mode or heading hold are the best option to use. thank you again for all the info.
Thankful for you channel. Great information mate.
Not sure with that level of detail. Check the switch you are using is working and not assigned to anything else. Best of luck!
Thanks, I managed to get it to work by creating a new model set up. For some reason when I use a copy model it does this.
I have latest Companion 2.3.14 - when I try to Simulate new model Inputs get error message ....Simulator for this FW is not yet available !!?? why ...joe
I've never seen that but the few times I can find that on a Google search seem to be version related - github.com/opentx/opentx/issues/8308
Best of luck!
thank you very much for your videos
I've tried to use the SA & SD 3 position switches for Triple Rate can you confirm this is possible
Also the simulation screen action of pushing up or back of the switches corresponds to down or forward switch direction on the Taranis can this be changed...joe
It is. Best of luck!
I blame these thumbs of mine.. You make it look easy.
TheRogerx3 You don't know how long I practiced before turning on the camera! ;)
Happy flying Sir!
Very helpful in setting up my qx7
Painless, can you set the dual rates for ailerons, rudder an elevator, to be activated by the same switch in the Taranis x9d?
Yep. :D
Hi I just picked up my Taranis and was trying to set up the expo to be less on up elevator and more on down elevator. Is there any way to do this? On the 9xr it was pretty simple butI can't seem to figure it out here.
Not sure, why would you want that?
If you have a short wing that is kind of quick they tend to be a little pitch sensitive especially with down elevator (gravity helping). A little more expo on down smooths out a high speed pass and less up expo allows easy maneuverability. Also my thumb seems to have more control dexterity at the bottom of the stick so softening the top helps. I did figure it out though, I added a mix and used the Side function x< or >, with different expo values. This seems to work but was hoping there was an easier way. Thanks for the response and great tutorials!
I see, look at differential on the radio for another way to do what you're after...(?)
My Devo 7 radio has a setting called Fixed ID. Its a safety so If I forget to change model in in the radio It won't link up. Say I'm flying 600 raptor nitro heli. and after that fly my 51 AJ slick. and forgot to change models in my radio it won't link up.
Most modern radios have some form of 'model match' technology now, it's a great safety feature..
How do I set it up on the Taranis ?
I added dual rates and expo to a switch and Amber tells me that I'm in low or high rates.
Thanks for the help Lee
What do you do if, at no matter what weight you set, the graph, the monitor, a meter I built like yours and the elevator, and other controls, all travel the maximum distance. Thank you, for the great tutorials. The best.
Check you've not missed a step in the video ;D Best of luck!
I am sorry, I guess my question got confusing. Simply, no reduction in weight causes a reduction in the servo throws. Why?
Something in the mixing you're doing is making that happen. Equal weights = equals throws.. I'd start again with a clean model. Best of luck!
Thanks, That did it.
Glad you sorted it. It's so frustrating to follow a video and get to the end with a different result!
Thx you helped me a lot in 10mn.
Got it. works great. Thanks.!
I'm guessing this would be the same for the throttle on an fpv drone?
Yes. You can do it in Betaflight or on the radio - th-cam.com/video/wZksCpdAlcQ/w-d-xo.html
Very helpful thanks
Very nice video. However, you should have setup switch B's forward position. If you were to move switch B to the forward position you would lose elevator function.
Curtis Adams Not only do you lose the function of the stick but when you set the switch to the unassigned position it holds the input at the value of the stick throw. If you had, say, right rudder at about 50% at the time, the rudder will get stuck at right 50%. At least it does on my Taranis + with the stock firmware. A rather surprising and potentially disastrous default if you accidentally knock the switch when flying.
So you should either assign the third switch position to get triple rates which is effectively this logic...
if( SA^ ) { //if switch A up
high rate
}else if ( SA- ) { //if switch A center
medium rate
}else if ( SAv ) { //If switch A down
low rate
}
or use the NOT switch position (!) to use all the positions eg SA^ for high and !SA^ for low which is effectively this logic...
if( SA^ ) { //if switch A up
high rate
} else if ( !SA^ ) { //if NOT switch A up
low rate
}
or set up an input default. The "lines" for the input get tested in order, top to bottom so if you assign the first line to SA^ you can use --- for the default second line. You have to have two lines. You then have this logic...
if( SA^){ //if switch A up
high rate
} else { // otherwise
low rate
}
One other point is that it is not necessary to hold the stick at full throw to switch between the rates. I think it just being done in the video to show the programmed throw on the channel monitor but it's a bit misleading.
why hast made them to be input? you can be made to the mixer? and what is the difference, if there is a difference! thank you.
+Giovanni Acanfora lots of extra things you can do when you use the Input, look down at the options when you create an input.. Happy flying!
I assume there is a pitfall to be avoided here: In this setup, the third switch position will disable the input altogether, will it not? If so, I would never leave the third position undefined. Either setup a third rate, have the middle rate active two positions, or use a two position switch.
Or you can use the !SWITCH version too. Happy flying!
+Painless360 precisely. The point was just to establish the inherent danger of leaving a switch position undefined for such a function :-)
Thanks a lot. It works. like you said i missed one little piece.
Hey! Glad you sorted it. It's so easy to do. We do it here lots and have to refer back to the videos for things we've not done for a while! ;D
Awesome. Thank you thank you thank you!
Hi, so you need to copy in order to add expo? can I just go to the channel lets say elevator and change it there? thanks
+LiGhT SPiRiT There is always at least two ways to do just about everything on this radio - give it a try! Best of luck!
But would it work ? thank you for the respond.
Try it and see ;)
Great vid.....as ever
On your Elder on elevator you made one switch to set at 60% and the other one at 100%I set up three switches at 60 80 100%because I'm so new I don't want to tear my first drone up and the switches seem to be working just like you showed in the video
+Billy Collins I wouldn't use dual rates on a quadcopter, use the different modes like angle, Horizon etc if you're getting to grips with flying the model. Happy flying exclamation mark
so i need to do this step on the rest of my channels and i guess i put all of them on the same switch right?
You can. Best of luck!
Is there a way that rates can be added to one of the pots so that you can increase or decrease rates in tiny amounts?
+MACUMLAD it can, see the later video fixed wing maiden flight tips.. it's in the OpenTX mix school and the fixed wing playlists.. hope that helps!
Dustin Johnsen you could, you could look at a curve, extend the mixes by over 100%, add negative expo to the inputs.. lots you can do..
Painless360 Never thought of negitive expo. In this case it made a big improvement. Thanks for your help
Would the same rules apply when setting up a flying wing?
Yep, should do! See later in the series for more details..
hi is it plus or minus to soften the sticks on the taranis.thx mark.
Plus. Check out my Opentx mix school series.. Happy flying
when setting up EXPO do I have to assign it to switch for it work?
You can set it up either way..
thanks painless.
how do i set up dead band on taranis.. am i using the logical switches?
Not sure what you're asking for - why would you want that for a switch?
Thank you so much
how to set dual rates and expo when we are using evelons? i cant set it up please some one could help me?
Simple question, why does my trims not transfer with my rates? When I trim my plane in low rates and then go back to full rates, my trim is out.
+TheDuncandan that is a big enough explain to need a video. I'll add it to the list..
Thanks Dan
+TheDuncandan you using flight modes?
No it's a fixed wing, I set the trims in low rates, and it fly's hands off but flick it to high rates and it's way out of trim again. Just seems I have to trim it for all rates.low mid high. I put it down as a qwerk of the Taranis.
+TheDuncandan hmmm, the trims should be persistent if you're not using flight modes. How are you setting up the dual rates? Mixes?
