    Same with AT&T U-Verse in Comcast markets, pretty easy to track unless there’s multiple customers back feeding.

      Yeah luckily it has always been just one at a time when I've tracked it. Very easy tickets (as long as it isn't rear easment aerial lol)

    I've seen the same thing when a satellite company connects into Comcast lines as well. Causes major egress and horrible noise back towards the plant.

    That must've been a (former) sub who got the phone company's modem installed. Those modems have an F-connector on them which the phone company's installer connected to that modem not realizing it was still connected to the cable company's tap.

    Interesting how CenturyLink’s signature is different on the Viavi One Expert meter in comparison to the DSAM.

      The Basic Cable Channel I know that. I was referring to the way it shows CenturyLink’s signature in comparison to the DSAM. It looks like a 12-15MHz wide carrier on the Viavi whereas the DSAM shows rolling spikes.

    • @thebasiccablechannel7464
      @thebasiccablechannel7464  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      William Varona - on ingress expert the dwell time is very high. The refresh rate on the dsam is pretty high. Although you can change the dwell time. I could however look at this backfeed with different filters and change the way it looks. Possibly the "power" option on the Viavi would possibly show the spikes.

      Have you figured out a way to turn that over range message off? I like to use ingress expert with auto agc off that way my noise floor doesn’t raise all the time. (It’s a minor annoyance to have to hit reset all the time). The only problem with that is that I always get that overrange message when plugged into a tap if I have auto agc off.

    Hi, I have been having upstream packet loss issues, tech came out and said my coaxial cables were, modem was good. He mentioned I was receiving too much power from something i don’t remember. He also got shocked by a coaxial cable when unplugging it from my splitter, Do you know what could be causing my upstream packet loss and T3/T4 timeouts in my network?

    • @thebasiccablechannel7464
      @thebasiccablechannel7464  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Without the ability to dig into your specific scenario, it sounds like you may have upstream noise in your neighborhood causing packet loss. Pretty common issue in many areas.
      As far as getting a shock, if the cable is grounded properly outside this shouldn't be an issue. Although I have seen scenarios where the ground or neutral power was bad for the home. The home will then use the cable as a ground path as most tap connections on the telephone pole or in the box by the street are grounded.

    • @jwickj1
      @jwickj1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would be curious if you have an amplifier. The previous cable guy has good ideas, but if grounding isn't the issue, it is possible the coax is being used to power an amp or satellite dish which shocked the tech.

    Do you unhook the paying customer if they have internet. And have a competitor for television.

    • @thebasiccablechannel7464
      @thebasiccablechannel7464  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Every attempt should be made to contact that customer and fix the issue while on site. I have only ran into one that still had our internet and I separated our services in the dmarc.
      If not home then their service will have to be disrupted for the better cause of the whole neighborhood. No reason to have 250 upset customers and commercial businesses when you can just deal with one customer.

      @@thebasiccablechannel7464 We trap the return on stuff like this almost daily and have jobs created for service. If we run out of traps before we get them back, a terminator works just as good ; ) Disrupted customer or not, we don't mess around. We have to look after our metrics.

    WOW major failure on CentryLink. My guess is cheapest possible contractors that have no clue that you NEED to disconnect the coax at the tap if you use existing install for other features outside cable service.
    That spectrum display for the upstream spectrum looked horrible.

    • @thebasiccablechannel7464
      @thebasiccablechannel7464  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pclover we track them on a daily basis now a days. I guess they are giving customers self connect kits at CenturyLink

    • @pclover
      @pclover 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's also as possibility.
      I guess it's too costly for cable companies to disconnect customers at the tap or drop when service is terminated to avoid issues like this.

    What is sad what we have come down to. It seems it's all about noise now. Get told it's cheaper to send maintenance techs all day burning fuel etc.. to shut a non customer or two off in nasty rear easements making other homeowners mad when you need in their fenced yard just to get to a tap... What's worse when you have to visit many taps to find it... Not homeowner friendly at times.... Yet we have many other things we could be fixing such as broken pedestals, repairing squirrel chew cables at places where we have no time for that now... Frustrating..

    • @thebasiccablechannel7464
      @thebasiccablechannel7464  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, but accessing all of those taps to do individual disconnects would be even more time consuming. As we drive higher modulation rates to get more bandwidth we will battle noise more and more. Luckily newer digital nodes have great ussnr to start with! Some cases over 40dB!

  • @pclover
    @pclover 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Curious, Couldn't you also use a wideband spectrum analyzer to track upstream noise issues like this? Perhaps something that is more real time? Good ones cost far more then that Viavi 630 most likely.
    Reason for that is It looks like that Viavi 630 is doing some averaging frequency sweep and isn't a real time view of what's going on. Perhaps it's good enough. Just thinking it could miss some more intermittent issues causing upstream ingress.

      pclover - The purple line which may look like a max line, it is actually a "live max" line and shows impulse better than the DSAM could ever dream of. Fast or rapid moving spikes show up with this.

Wheb people say they hear a low pitch hum in the home it’s because their hearing is sensitive and they can hear the tap. Most annoying hum ever, will drive you nuts because my master bedroom is next to the tap. Comcast need to stop putting taps next bedrooms. Took me a whole year to figure out it was the tap.
