It's not worth your life to save a little time on the commute home. I know it's legal to do that, but I don't think it should be. You can never predict what the other cars are going to do in front of you and around you, especially those idiot drivers on 680! That's just my meaningless opinion, tho.

i don't ride but sitting in traffic between cars doesn't seem very safe, either. lots of distracted drivers on their phones especially in standstill traffic like this. plus a bike is much smaller than a car so the person behind really needs to paying attention. i don't have that much trust in random drivers. just seems like it's such an easy way to get rear ended by some moron. sitting still in traffic between cars also seems like you will always be in at least one car's blindspot due to how small you are and they might merge right into you without looking. at least if you're moving along the white lines you're easier to see/hear. just my 2c. dangerous either way but splitting seems to me like the (slightly) lesser danger

Excellent observation. I feel far more vulnerable in that line of cars just like you said for the exact same reasons. Although russellroberts9932 had a good point also. I say to each his own.
As for me - I'm a lane splitter. The wild man in the front is rarely ever involved in an accident.
