I live in Montreal Canada, which is in the Laurentian climate zone. It's a transitional zone between the mild temperate zone to the South in the Eastern USA, and the cold boreal forest zone to the North. The boreal forest zone is primarily coniferous forest with very little agriculture (Except maybe some isolated hay fields to feed a few dairy cows), whereas the Eastern USA has deciduous forests and rich diverse agriculture, except for some of the South-East where there is so much rain that the soil is poor in nutrients, so the forest tend to be pine and only a few crops can grow. The forests in the Laurentian zone tend to be mixed coniferous and deciduous. One characteristic of the Laurentian area is we have frequent freeze-thaw cycles and frequent freezing rain, which is why maple trees are so predominant in this zone. Maple trees are adapted so that their branches snap off easily with freezing rain, then later grow back easily. Also they have a very rich and sugary sap that protects their roots from freeze-thaw cycles. Maple tree leaves turn brilliant red, orange and yellow in the Fall (October) before falling and in the spring (around april) the abundant sap is harvested and boiled down to make maple syrup.
