- After sharing Chessboxing with 4th degree black belt @SenseiSeth, he showed me his signature spinning back kick. I'm on a quest to fulfill a childhood dream of earning a black belt, and spinning kicks were holding me back. Huge thanks to Seth for the collaboration and instruction!
The series "Back to Black Belt" will begin in January. If you want to track the lessons, challenges, and progress from white belt to black belt with me, drop a sub and let me know you're excited about it in the comments!

Let’s gooo! You picked it up so quick!
Great collab!
Couple of savages!
Appreciate you Seth! Cartwheel kick tutorial next? ;)
You made it happen bro! @@ChavaM88
Came here from a Seth’s channel. I go to a studio that combines ITF TKD with Mui Thai and boxing. The spinning back kick is my favorite when you are sparring and they try to change angles to my back side. As soon as they step to my back I throw that around. Their movement shortens the turn and lends itself to using the glute to get some good umphh into it.
Thanks for coming over! Would love to try that combo. Seems like a good weapon, hope I get to use it someday!
What helps me is don't let the word "spin" get in your head because it invokes a circle but this isn't really a circular kick , it's linear . I use "turning" instead and try to picture myself in a narrow hallway that forces all my energy in a straight line. Good luck!
Well said, it was tripping me up (literally) but not anymore thanks to Seth!
I've never done this kick, but I've often thought about how to.
Seth is teaching it exactly how I imagined the technique.
So now I consider myself an expert, and I never even have to do anythng.
A true martial artist knows he is not a expert, never will be.
Give it a shot and let me know how it goes bro!
@@movingwithmat No need. I can do it perfecly in my mind.
I wish I could show you my spinning elbow. It's 10x better, but also imaginary.
@@jackmckenzie3248 I don't know I'm not an expert. I'm not even a martial artist. I just think a lot.
@@jackmckenzie3248 thats the joke, he is just trolling
Every kick has a crosshair. With the back kick that is the front foot heel. Wherever you point that heel is where your kick is gonna end up.
Another thing I like to think about to get that momentum going in the right direction is to train it by doing a lunge into the kick. So you turn the front foot and spot the target, aim with the heel, now with your back turned you do a lunge and drive that lunging leg through into the kick.
Lunge down, explode up, and drive the leg through the middle and out the other side with your whole body following.
Good tips and very insightful, thank you!
Great collab! Both of you seem like such great teachers and it was really cool to see you learn that kick so quickly. Starting to get interested in chess boxing so I'm super happy to have found your channel too!
My man. More chessboxing (and trying martial arts) to come - thanks for being here and the kind words!
Looking forward to it, man @@movingwithmat 🥋
He is a good Teacher. I’ve seen this kick demonstrated 3 very similar ways that were all good. I can’t wait to get to the gym to do this demonstration step by step.
Thank You Senpai Seth and congratulations on the promotion 🙏🏼
Give it a try and report back to us!
I like many people came from the Chess Boxing video. My main takeaway were the two breaths you used. I understand box breathing pretty well but I would love just a written description or instructions of that “fire breath”.
Yes, I’ll be releasing more content on this channel about breathwork and state change management!
It's really nice to see sensei seth be a sensei lol. Really cool video.
he's such a good teacher!
Yeah dude! Matt mastering the Spanning Back Kick! I need to work on mine, big time LOL
Great edit brother, thank you!
7:10 cool Stephen Wonderboy Thompson reference!!!
A keen eye 🫡
Great job, dude! Good luck on your journey to black! You can do it! :)
With consistency and hard work!
i'm glad Seth got his 4th degree. I saw his video covering his journey, it was quite moving. I'm glad he got through it. he earned it.
Such a great journey and story for sure!
Dude, if I could go back in time, I’d learn on my non dominant foot first.
I’m curious, why would you prefer to learn on your non dominant first?
Because that’s my “weak” side; my brain can’t connect to my muscles as easy. Like, I can’t flex the same muscles on my left asscheek (the muscle I need to land that kick with power) that I can with my right glute. If I practiced using my weak side first, that muscle/brain connection would be stronger (not as strong as my dominate side, but still). I’d have an easier time doing moves or activities such as weightlifting with better stability.
My goal is to not have a dominate side. I want my body to work in a balanced way so that I can use all of its strength.
The jingle 🎉
Catchy
Loving the content Mat!
means a lot!!
Atta boy! Killing it
thanks bro
distinguishing between the back side kick and turning back kick, is the key. With the foot facing or prone sideways this is a back side kick. Classical spin or turn back kick is with the toes facing downward and the hip only turning half way so the leg and heel fire straight backward into the leg or groin or shin of the opponent. 2 very different kicks and applications. th-cam.com/video/myOx_6uXpmM/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the breakdown!
Insightful!
Kudos to the Sensei!
oh yeah, now you can find some combo from past kickboxing matches and train it yourself
Love that idea!
Came here from Seths Channel! Nice Video!
Appreciate it! More to come, including a spinning wheel kick he taught me
He’s a natural!
Must run in the Thomas blood
Don’t mess with them!!
you always were the smartest Thomas
I am doing Shotokan turning ushiro geri. Thank you for the tips! Turing front foot inwards seems a great way to make the turn faster
Yes that was a game changer!
Seth’s footwork is similar to the spinning back fist/elbow from Muy Thai.
I like to straighten my support leg as I drive into the target with a kick, and drop down a little with the fist/elbow strike, both to generate a little more power.
That’s a good parallel! Makes sense
Dude youre tall and long legs, you would give some devastating kicks. Good job!
That's the plan! Just need the technique and reps!!
Great video, I will be using this to improve my spinning back/side kick for Karate
Yes, do it! Then report back 😊
I never thought I'd hear Seth say "straight up your butt" 11:10
I giggled at that part too
Just saw the chess boxing video from Sensei Seth
Thanks for coming over! Hope you like chessboxing and martial arts content ;)
Tae kwon do is where I got my start
Me too!
I don’t know what I’m doing with my hands 😂😂😂😂
Very cool this man will be doing 360-No-Scopes in no time
That’s always been my dream
He should hit Icy Mike with a kick like this to show him how a real kick works
I’d watch that!
good stuff
Appreciate it!
Can’t wait to try this out
Can't wait to see you try ;)
Spin to win
All in due time
I have to learn this 🔥
I'll teach you at chessboxing practice today
I appreciate Seth giving credit to TKD in this (insert devilish grin), but this is not how we do it. Your shoulders should be square upon impact and you should be using all of that glute muscle to get maximum power.
Good to know, thank you!
i rip on taekwondo too but only in humour. every martial art has something to offer.
Couldn’t agree more!
Cool!
Appreciate it!
Sorry Matt. I wanted to be your 1k sub but I must have missed it. Enjoy the sub anyway. Best wishes, Thepawnslayer
No apology necessary, appreciate the support!
A lot of my coaches would fail me for doing a "back kick" this way. They'd call that a side kick, but never really explained why it mattered. Thoughts? Does it matter if your toes are pointed down or to the side? Is it a different kick.
🔥
These guys don’t skip leg day
Never.
Awesome video thank you. Some constructive subjective feedback. The music was little too loud and drowned out the voice a little.
Thanks for the heads up! Still learning how to edit so that’s appreciated
Them things HURT
... with practice. Before this lesson I'd just fall over
If you are a shotokan karate master, you could have explained to him more simply... you already know..😇 musubi dachi - yoko geri, ushiro geri, ushiro mawashi... the differences and similarities... you add a little jump to this technique...😊
I love your videos, plus when you work out with Steven.🏆🎖
Ooooh I have no idea what you said, but sounds cool
Is it only me or are your calfs extremely developed
A lifetime of bouncing around on my toes 😂
@movingwithmat figured so😅 btw great progress with the kick
sensei the goat seth sent me
He really is the GOAT isnt he
sensai seth
the GOAT
He looks a lot like frostbolt
Wait what’s that? Or who’s that?
@@movingwithmat He's one of the best geoguessers on the planet and you give off serious Frostbolt vibes XD. Not an insult tbh.
That's NOT a back kick. You're doing a turning side-kick. 😊
Tomato tomato
Now turn it into a jump spinning back kick.
On it o7
