not all the bridges in the US are built with a profit motive. All to often the politicians get in there and extract money from the federal govt to build boondogles that they can brag about to their voters. Take for example the Bridge to nowhere (never built) which was proposed 20 years ago from Ketchikan Alaska to Gravina island (population 50). When proposed it would have cost $398 million dollars. This route is serviced by a ferry service which does a good job.
Another thing to consider with china is that they own all the land and are a Dictatorship. They don't have to do enviromental impact statements or negotiate with land owners. This speeds up the process considerably. In addition There have been quite a few infastructure disasters in China. Since the communist party controls all the media you don't hear about them unless it happens in a big city and some foreigners see it happen.

The narrator disparages profits, but it is profits (and losses) that allocate resources in the most efficient way. Without profits it is possible to marshal billions of dollars of resources to mega projects favored by politicians over those that are favored by people making their own choices. A former director or high-ranking official of China's statistics bureau said recently that there are over a billion empty apartments in China. To paraphrase economist Ludwig von Mises:

I think the word "LEGO" is used to describe the pace bridges are built is very apt. Sections of pre-fabricated are slotted together like a LEGO set. Ship building also employs such techniques where sections are built in different locations. Each section already has most of the essential components, even wiring built in. They are then assembled at the dock.
Software engineers also use a technique called "modular" design. Blocks of codes are built and tested for bugs. Each module does a specific task. The software developer simply pick the modules and assemble them according to the functionality required. That is human intelligence. Building up a large project with small bits, and learn from the mistakes.

The downside to all this rapid construction is they took shortcuts, skimp on materials, hand wave inspections and don't allow enough time for concrete to set between pours. This is why its referred to as "Tofu dregs" as it has all the durability of a slab of tofu. Dozens of bridges and roadways have collapsed only a few years or even months after construction.
