Here's what's up with sharptails bro. You need to be hunting draws, creeks, tree belts and buffalo berry bushes. That flat short grass will have a few but you'll walk your legs off finding one and he'll flush 80 yds away. I finally went to a 3 1/2 #5 turkey load to scratch down my first one. After that I learned to look for draws and trees and berry patches. Use plenty of firepower. 3 inch #4 is about right. They aren't tough but they're hard to get close to. Early season is best. They get wild after that.
Midday grouse are, in my opinion, the hardest upland bird to hunt. In the morning and evenings, they'll come to water and gravel, but after that, they fly out into the middle of the prairie, which is really the middle of the middle of nowhere. Later in the season, they get bunched up and the snow forces them into more manageable locations, but then there's 50 pairs of eyes ready to bounce at the first sign of danger. But a guy doesn't have to see a thing to enjoy western SD with the old man. Great times and memories.
Great video John! That must have been cool hanging out with Pops and Daisy for a couple of days! Love Upland Hunting! That's what I do! Anytime you want to show more of that, please feel free to do so.
Tell ya right now you can find better numbers than that just between Valley City and Devils Lake. In SD you want to stay up near the border if west river. Ive seen so many NW river SD that they sit on the fencelines and powerlines like doves. But yes, they are almost always quite spooky and hard to hit. If your camping on water you can even put up your spinner and they will come to that.
I just got back from elk camp and I got 5 blue grouse up there. I was shooting cheap 2 3/4in #8 same gun as you with a full choke. I just road hunt them I always aim for the head but these cheap loads had much to desire. Still killed up to 20-25yards but once they started flying I couldn’t get them down. Think I might use my turkey choke next time or some better shells
I just got back home from grouse hunting. I saw a few, got 1. We have the ruffed grouse here north of Duluth, MN. They mostly stick to trails in the woods where there's lots of cover so it's a little trickier to get a shot off unless it's one of the dumb ones that just stand still in the middle of the trail and wait to be shot.
My dad and I went out yesterday 250 miles directly north of you. We got 4 sharptails and 2 partridge. My tips: they like bullberry(buffaloberry) bushes, if you see one almost guaranteed there is more, and there always seems to be one left if you kick up a group.
@@MinnDakOutdoors all that being said I usually only specifically hunt for them the week before ND pheasant opener to get my dogs out. We don't have a ton around the Dickinson area. It seems like around here if you find a group you should probably put a chase on them. If I flush a group I don't expect to see anymore in that field. When you get into the grasslands and Eastern MT it might be a different story. People seem to be flocking there to shoot grouse this year.
Grouse hunting is fun and a great way to enjoy the prairie. Look for high areas with very little cover and expect lots of wild flushes. Keep walking and eventually you will run into a giggle chicken.
People now days have it going, my time with my dad fishing we didn't have go pro's, no cellphones and computers. But I wish we did, had a awsome time together. That is why I injoy your videos. Good luck with your endeavors.
For some reason I thought they would be fast flyers like ruffed grouse. Best shells to use for grouse hunting are 6 shot or 7 shot. That's all I use and the only loads I have seen anybody else use for grouse. You gotta do it again with Sam so you can at least have someone film and take along some fishing tackle and poles. I was out in the Wall Drug area as a kid and it's an awesome place to visit. It's the South Dakota version of the Wisconsin Dells but without the water parks and mini golf courses. You are honestly the first person I have seen do any kind of grouse hunting. If you ever do a ruffed grouse hunt, take a lot of shells and plenty changes of underwear. Those things are loud when they take off and they are fast.
@@MinnDakOutdoors you can probably find videos of them flushing but it's a whole different thing in person. Even gets the heart going! You laugh now but you would know what I mean on the change of underwear when you get your first one up! 😂😂
You and your dad should try hunting fort Pierre grasslands great for sharp tails, prairie chickens, pheashants, and even some gray partridge lots of public ground hunted there for over 10 years and not one trip have I ever been disappointed best place in SD to hunt grouse
John I don't know about sharp tail grouse but if they flush like ruffed grouse and you shoot and miss a ruff grouse will walk back to where you flushed it relow key a ruff grouse will circle after you flush it and miss and will walk back from behind you but also a ruff grouse will also hide in any tree or brush scrub it can after being flushed but if sharp tail act like a ruff grouse that's just something's to look out for
I've been watching your channel for a while now. Recently, I've had the fortune to move to SD where my youngest is starting at DSU. I'll be rebranding my channel and getting it off the ground but would be awesome to do a bird hunt catch and cook episode with you, your brother, and your dad. I'm in Madison. BTW - my very first trip to Ft Pierre National Grassland last Saturday was successful. I came home with 3 prairie chickens! I'll be my first 2022 episode. More to come.
Ridge lines and boot leather. If you can find areas near sunflower fields or corn fields that can help. Experienced pointing dogs are huge help, but once you get a search image for micro habitat, a lab will be fine.
@mindak how much movement is there on the truck when you’re sleeping if the other person is shifting around at night ? And do you have a install video on it I would be attaching one to my shell like you have
John, get out there and do some prairie dog hunting....when I've been out prairie dog hunting you can literally go through 1,000 rds of 223 just blasting dogs all day.
I say you need a tiny lift. Should see if anyone in ur area can put a add a leaf on the taco and maybe front lift to but I think that weight is giving you a soggy taco.
I always support you guys but shooting down the road should have not been included... I'll probably use this in my Hunters Safety Class on what not to do
@@MinnDakOutdoors That is surprising, but legal or not probably not a good idea...It would have been hard to pull off that shot considering that hill. Again I support you guys but it is a bad look... All Good
My father passed away last year, I would give anything for one more hunt with my dad. Never take it for granted. More hunts with you dad please.
🙏🏻
Sorry for your loss dude

Great father / son time! The truck tent pretty cool piece of gear. Loved the video!!

Love seeing the upland hunts! I'm heading up to Nodak in November for pheasant.
I did watch till the end. Love it; you talking to a prairie dog. Made me start laughing.
The truth: killing is not what makes the memories.

Love that truck set up. Grouse seem to be a bit hard to get close too.
I live near wall and there are lots of grouse always fun to hunt.
Father MinnDak confirmed Glizzy guy 😂 Loved it fellas, only a few hours from me! Walldrug is awesome too lol
Grouse love berry patches. I give them the berries and cream with one shot😂

Got it!
Hunt them just like pheasants, they do like trees an shrubs🦆
Okay!
First time seeing a rooftop tent.. hmm... I didn't know they made those lol
Awesome vid !!!
Oh hell yaa! My backyard
Russian olive trees. If you find them. You find grouse

I saw you when I was out there antelope hunting and i was hoping you would post a video of you hunting antelope

Your dad should make an appearance on a duck hunt...I dont think I see that much at all...atleast 1 hunt.
Would love to go do some grouse hunting. Looks like a blast. Dont beat yourself up too much. Im 1 for 4 on pheasants.
It was fun

Hey Mindak, I just moved to SD and it’s my 2nd year duck hunting, do you have any tips?
Don’t give up!
Ypu should put a link to your other channel on the description
Awesome
A boy and his dad out camping and hunting .it can)t get any better then that.
Love that
hope i can get my firearms license soon so i can start hunting them to. also 1:15. lol
I volunteer to quit my job and be your camera man. Lmao
Anyone else see the one drop in the shot cam footage from the water hole?
This is a sage grouse, and not a sharpy. I believe limit for sage grouse is only one, as they are highly protected

Rip burger

I’m from Sturgis you’re an hour and a half for me
Be careful around them prairie dogs. The carry the plague.
Blame it on the shelves lol

West river better than east river
Why couldn't your dad film?
So is there anyway u can reactivate your old hunting videos ? That sucks man. Wished you archived it instead of deleting them
