    I really like the Numidian heavy cav. They were exactly what I had hoped the normal numidian cav would be, a great hybrid cav unit that could wittle down units with their javelins and then charge in and finish them off. Maybe they were still a bit weak, but absolutey loved the aesthetics and hybrid nature of the unit.

    Why is no one mentioning thoreos spears? These guys are insane. Much more than decent in melee, obviously strong against large, quite sturdy and resilient to darts, throws a couple of flying punches to the enemy (and God knows how many times this was a blessing on my flanks). But more than anything, they are available soon! These guys are available in the mid-early game for many factions but are revolutionary in any campaign. Of course, not the best spears overall, still one of the best for cost effectiveness in the game imho

    Ive got a few that most people maybe dont even know of or consider:
    1. Samnite armoured spearmen (I generally like the look of the different pre roman italic units, the painted shields, the various crests, the chest armours, very fancy...)
    2. Thracian peltasts (the cloaks, the hoods, the painted shields and they are one of the best skirmisher unit in the game with some decent melee capabilities)
    3. Veteran Centuriae (theese heavy roman hoplites just are so cool. Dont get me wrong I like the organized and uniform look of the later roman legions but with this unit you can see some of the most georgeous looking bronze cuirasses in all of Rome 2, cool and exotic helmet models...)
    4. Arabian cavalry (they look pretty average, but are xtremely cost efficient, perfect for huntig and cutting down light archers or slingers, in the dessert they also never get tired and are really fast)
    5. Pontic swordsmen (nostalgia reasons, I somehow loved playing as Pontus in Rome 1 and beacause of that the first campaign I played when Rome 2 was out was a pontic one, the unit looks cool as well)
    6. Nuragic Runnners (so unique, I mean men armed with iron gloves!? The Rise of the Republic campaign offered so many different cultures and therefore unit variety)

  • @marcus3457

    I happen to be a big fan of certain combinations of units. For example, heavy hoplites or pikes with Agema Spears on the flanks backed up by picked peltasts, heavy shock cav and some light swords for quick back line maneuvering and defense happen to be some of my favorites.

    Rome and its legionaries will always be my favorite historical faction. Roman legionnaires are freaking badass. They look sikkk AF as a unit in terms of armor. The way they pilum, then charge is so cool as well as their tetsuda formation. My 2nd favorite unit would definite he hoplites, in particular Spartan hoplites. Similar to the Romans, their models look cool and their phalanx formation is awesome, but they don't look as "beefy" and "armory" as Romans.

      Iberian swords of the Lusitani and Arevaci are not the same as the mercenaries available to Carthage.
      Mercenaries are hybrid, the Lusitani/Arevaci iberian swords are not hybrid units but still have 5 precursors.
      and, it actually is better for them to have 5 precursors than the hybrid javelines like the thureos spears.
      Precursors do alot more AP damage (32 missile damage, 12 is AP and 20 is base damage) and has a higher bonus vs large at 10.
      Hybrid javelines do have a higher range than a precursor, but has less damage at29 missile (9 is AP, 20 is base damage) and has a lower bonus vs large at 5.
      you can destroy the most well armoured of units with 5 precursor, and will absolutely kill elephants and chariots

    • @gigastrike2

    I don’t play multiplayer but In campaigns if I’m playing an eastern or nomadic faction the noble horse archers or royal horse archers are a great unit, they can surround and whittle down the enemy’s armies whilst staying out of range then when they run out of ammo, you can either just retreat them with no losses and attack again next turn or charge them into melee and cut down what’s left with their high melee attack. My other favourites are the scythed chariots, Syrian war elephants, Syrian or Cretan archers, royal peltests, silver shield pikes. Selucids are easily my favourite faction as they have so much unit diversity, just about the only thing they don’t have is good horse archers but you can even get these in campaign by making the nomadic factions your satrapies and levying from them.

    Close second is the Agema Spear unit for Pergammon. It's a Thureos spear with much better stats so it can hold its own. Full armies of just this unit can take on anything you throw at it as every unit has like 6 to 8 volleys of javelins and mid to high tier melee stats

    My top 5 (in no particular order):
    -Thorax Hoplites: One of the most cost-effective hoplite units in the game. Will always have a special place in my heart as Syracuse was my favorite faction to play with;
    -Thracian Nobles: One of the more unique units in the entire game, and one with a HUGE charge Bonus and Weapon Damage;
    -Numidian Noble Cavalry: Simply put, they have the stats I wish regular Numidian Cav had. Decent both in skirmishing and in melee;
    -Cretan Archers: Best archer unit in the game, which is why I hate that only Rome gets to recruit them at will;
    -Evocati Cohort: Had to include a Roman unit here, and these guys don't disappoint. Definitely the more cost-effective legionary unit in Rome's roster.

    My favorite is Noble Horse Archers. Its unfair that the "Parthian Shot" is given to almost every missile cavalry unit in this game like javelins given to most melee units.

    • @Kili2807
      @Kili2807 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But both is really realistic. The romans named it parthian shoz because the parthians were the first horse archers enemies the romans faced, but the Steppe tribes and persian cavalry also have a long tradition with mounted archers.
      The javelin was the cheapest and most widely used weapon in ancient times. Why you shouldnt use it before going into close combat? I like that many units carry them, because it makes even trashy units useful, like Kushite Slave Infantry, Hillmen or Levy Freemen

    What I object to is AD Roman units being available in a BC campaign time period. Very unhistoric.

    • @matthewmorter7803

      You could just not research the technology to get legionaries for your whole campaign. Then you could have hastati, principes, and triarii the whole time, even when conquering mesopotamia! That's historically accurate, right?
      It's a give and take, for what it is I think the game is pretty darn historically accurate. you could go play Rome 1 with Europa Barbarorum mod if you want a really historically accurate experience. I wish the team from EB would have made an EB mod for Rome 2, it could have been better than all the other Rome 2 mods, I swear.

    To be honest, Rome 2 is only good because of its cinematic aesthetics. The manifold issues with UI, morale, AI and naval bugs ruin the experience.
