  • Hi Friend! Potato here!
We all have good and bad days, sometimes months or even longer periods when language learning seems impossible. Today I wanted to get very personal with you, share some of my thought about language learning and give you a few tips on how to approach language learning when it feels like you will never be able to learn a thing.

I enjoy the fact you've covered a lot of things other Language TH-camrs don't, like accepting failure or knowing when to stop. Some folks believe there's a one size fits all solution to language learning. They often don't account for folks with exceptionalities like autism, ADHD (oh hey, that's me), generalized anxiety, or folks who just can't afford some of the resources that the TH-camr insists will make you fluent (i.e. italki). There's many ways to learn a language for free, but DuoLingo, Anki, Genki, Lingodeer, etc., just don't work for some people.
Learning more than one language at time can also be difficult for a number of reasons, and you're apt to fall behind your goal on at least one of them. Realizing this, and knowing when to cut your losses is important.
I had studied Russian and French along side each other for a while, both common languages where I live. But, French is the dominant one. And when I moved on to a new profession and saw significantly less Russian-speaking clients, I felt it was time to study something else. I can still read Cyrillic (both Ukrainian and Russian) and can say a few basic sentences, but I decided to keep my focuses on a language that would help me in the long-run (despite having no real passion for French). In the mean time, I picked-up Norwegian as a language / culture I was really interested in and I feel as if I'm excelling. Maybe one day I'll come back to Russian, but it won't be for a while yet.
Thank you for another wonderful video! I love how realistic you make language-learning feel!

Thank you for your comment! Learning a language is a very personal or individual journey. I think I realised it even more this year, when learning German is a breeze and learning Korean is quite challenging for me. Everyone is different, and faces different challenges when it comes to learning. All we can do is constantly do research to see if there are any better ways for us to learn, while simultaneously relying on trial and error.

“what’s the worst that could happen? not meeting your language goals? please, as if it’s the first time you haven’t met your goals” literally just changed my entire perspective in two seconds like you’re RIGHT

Seriously ,I just can't stand genki and anki too but I tried to them so many times because how many people recommended. But they never worked for me. Honestly I love this channel because how relatable it is and inspiring it is like how you do different challenges, it give me motivation. So, I hope you continue to make videos

I'm really glad to hear that you find the content relatable and inspiring!
It is a real battle to find correct resources and learning style, when you are just starting. And it also makes you feel a bit crazy, when everyone you ask keeps recommending the same stuff that just doesn't work for you! I hope you will find strength to find what works for you, and keep going :)

You have good advices. I have no idea why I didn't find you earlier.
I'm currently learning Spanish on my own. It's hard for me to me get those new rules into my head, but I enjoy it many times. In school I study German and because I'm still at an elementary school, English. I hate German. I have no motivation to learn German, it's completely useless language for me. I'd like to learn more languages at the same time, but I don't have enough time to spend it on learning + Every time I do two things at the same time I fail.
Now I want to spent more time with the language I wan't to learn. I made a huge step forward in my Spanish and hope I'll be one day be able to speak it. When I learned one language, then I can learn more.
    Thank you for the video!

Keep going! I wish you all the luck with Spanish! And a little tip if you can't avoid learning German, find beauty with in it. For instance, I really like German humour! They also make really cool movies :)
