Fun story: In art class, my teacher wanted us to draw something that looked like it was in motion. So since I really liked Sonic I decided to draw Sonic running. I used an image of Sonic running in the Mania opening as a reference and tried to replicate it as closely as possible. It is, to this day probably my best and favourite drawing and I hold it as my magnum opus.

I did something similar with the japanese SA1 running animation. In that SA1, his legs blur when in motion.

I've only ever read a single issue of the Sonic comic book but the one I did was full of incredible examples of simulated motion, including a moment where Sonic punches something and his fist is just a streak. I bought the issue for visual references and must have stared at it a hundred times. Good times

The cool thing about drawing Sonic the hedgehog is that he's actually made out of simplistic shapes so if you were to draw with his classic design or whatever design you like to draw him in his shapes are just simplistic enough for you to draw them

That way you don’t have to add another layer in order to color over the green for the white glove highlights part. You can just repaint over the green and it will not go over the lines :>

My artstyle is very heavily inspired by the Sonic artstyle. It's recently become much more.. personalized? But I initially took very heavy inspiration from the Sonic series. And I'm pretty sure my followers know this. I used to do very heavy shading, but now I use almost no shading. I know that's not too Sonicy, but whatevs. I personally use GIMP to draw, though I recently found a nice phone app called Sketchbook, it works well. I personally like to use references when I draw, but I also do my sketches on paper and then import them into digital. I just work way better that way. But yeah, my style has very Sonicy proportions, such as large heads, large eyes, large hands and feet, sort-of a smaller body, very skinny arms and legs, very similar pupil style, kinda similar mouth style, etc. I almost never do backgrounds. I pretty much only draw my own characters. If you wanna see my art, it's not hard to find. You can find pretty much all my socials here on TH-cam.

The thing about Sonic's design is just how versatile it is. We have the simpler, more cartoonny/softer looking classic design, the cooler, graphite art style from Adventure, the grounded and "realistic" looking o6, and many, many others. Sonic is just very volatile, and it is so fun to play around with his unique design

This tutorial is incredibly organised, informative and easy to follow. If it's something you enjoy, I would definitely recommend that you make more like this - you're very good at it.

Omg this is PERFECT timing, literally earlier today I was drawing a Sonic pride picture and considered doing it in the Adventure style but didn’t know where to start. yet another reason to justify recommending Chaomix to all my Sonic friends lol

Yes that sounds like an awesome drawing! Maybe incorporate rainbows into the shading? Like instead of using lighter versions of the base colors for the highlights, try doing rainbows? 👀

you replicate the shading style perfectly!!
just for this one piece i think the proportions of the legs are a bit off, maybe a bit lanky?

I always loved to draw Sonic. I would often times just draw a bunch of sonics over the years.

You weren't a bad student. Some of us listen to what a teacher is saying better, while doodling. And some remember what was being discussed at the time of drawing when taking a look at it afterwards. Your brains were working 💪

Chaomix you are a life saver, as I learnt some new details I never even knew existed... THANK YOU! I draw Sonic like a lot... And my art style takes inspiration from Junio and Adventure Sonic.. So this helps out a lot.

Just wanted to drop by and say thank you for making this! although i have been doing digital art for almost 8 years now, and have been doing Sonic Adventure styled stuff for about 5, this helped SO much.
I honestly didn't even KNOW some of these tricks existed in the first place! In fact, when it came to doing fades within the highlights, i was straight up just using a blur tool found in Paint Tool Sai, rather than using the trick you showed.
    great stuff!

The Sonic X/Sonic Adventure artstyle is my favorite Sonic artstyle. Just like how the GBA Superstar Saga Mario sprite is my favorite Mario sprite.

i've spent time trying to mimic this artstyle before but didn't pick up on some of the things you included, so thank you! (specifically the rounded lineart edges and how the highlights include 2 colors)

The main thing that I wanted to figure out was how to replicate the shading and highlights, super helpful
