This is an amazing resource! I am all about over preparedness and this is the first video about planning a cut garden that speaks to this level of organization. Thank you, thank you, thank you! As I’m planning next year’s cut flower garden I have rewatched this four times already! I’ve created my own to scale layout in excel, I have a master spreadsheet planning approximated seed start, move to greenhouse, pot up, last frost, transplant, hopeful blooms, and first frost date. Other information, planning spacing, noting if they need to be pinched, color palette, how many, staking system, row covers, and anything else’s. My seeds have been organized by start month, or direct sow month. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you so much!

Nice video. The claim about the full moon being colder is an urban legend though. There's no influence of the moon phase on temperature, nada. I'm a physics PhD.

Thank you for this video, your work ethic is inspiring !! This is my first year starting seeds indoors for fun and love. I am also in zone 6a. Do you feel like we may need to wait to plant until the weekend after Mother's Day? I have zinnia, bachelors buttons, china aster, and cosmos from Floret, Dahlia tubers from Zephyros Farm, Lupine from Annies Annuals, then Phlox and Echinacea from Santa Rosa Gardens. Do you think I have room for a little bit of all of that in a 10' by 3' raised bed, or should i think about a bigger bed and/or placing in inconspicuous places in my yard? Also, (last question I swear lol), I think i may have some cosmos and zinnias that are ready now to be transplanted because they've grown so vigorously ( I know they can't go in the garden yet ) do I need to place them into larger pots for the next 3/4 weeks?
Hi there... we think it may be best to wait to plant until after the last frost date, which is the first weekend of May. We've been planting out the cold tolerant things like delphinium that can take a little frost. Last year the last frost came the first part of April! But you never know, and it's ALWAYS better to play it on the safe side when it comes to tender plants. Not sure on the bed size, but follow the recommendations for spacing for each plant. And it may be good to bump zinnias and cosmos up to larger pots so they don't get root bound. It's always tough to know when to start plants so they have enough but not too much time to get established! Best of luck with your garden this year!
Hi, i'm also a zone 6a, maybe 5b but I'm located in Quebec. In january there is still a lot of snow on the grown, also in febuary. I'm wondering how I can put low tunnel in the ground in january and planting my ranunculus in febuary! Also, I love your videos, it really helps me out!
It actually snowed on us the day we planted the ranunculus! We like to put up the skeleton of the low tunnel in the fall, then cover the ground inside with black plastic so the sun can warm the soil. We then put the white/clear tunnel plastic on a few weeks before we plant into the tunnel to create the greenhouse environment and further warm and dry the soil so it's ready for planting. This method won't work in all zones, especially not if you get lots of snow, but it works for us.

I'm curious what your grow system looks like (type of lights etc)? You mentioned that it is in the basement. What temperature do you aim for? Thanks for the tips!
It's very basic. :) We have 1 lifetime table and 1 shorter table with 3 grow lights suspended over them from the ceiling. We use chains to hang the lights so we can adjust them. That part of the basement doesn't have a heat supply so the average temperature is probably somewhere between 50 and 60. This winter has been mild, so it's probably closer to 60 degrees. If I think it's a little cool for a certain variety (celosia, cosmos, gomphrena, zinnia), I'll pop it onto a heat mat to help it germinate. Thanks for the question! :)
