    HOW TO AFFORD A DOG ON A BUDGET (all the puppy costs exposed!) In this video I'm going into all the nitty gritty details: the cost of owning a dog! Of course, pet ownership is so much more than just owning a dog but understanding the monthly cost of owning a dog is a great start. Before we got Milo, I did ALL kinds of research on the average cost of owning a dog as well as the REAL cost of owning a dog. I also talked with couples that I knew that already had dogs and knew exactly how much dogs cost a month. Owning a dog on a budget is so doable once you know the cost of the dog and can plan for it ahead of time. In this video I go over the initial cost of buying a dog as well as the "start up" costs, and ongoing monthly costs. Small/little dogs are pretty much always going to cost less but the numbers in this video are a good place to start. Whether you're working full time or a beginner when it comes to owning a dog, watching this video and taking notes will get you one step closer to pet ownership!

    Pets are EXPENSIVE! I wish I’d watched a video like this when I was younger. I’d never trade the time I had with those furry friends… but holy crap did they make life harder financially when I wasn’t making much money.

      Agreed! You want to be able to give them an amazing life and it can cause a lot of guilt when we have to choose between skimping on something for them vs. the money 😥

    Such good information, Jess! We have a Doberman & man, he's the sweetest, but boy he has been so expensive lol We got him at 13 weeks old, years ago before we started a family. Even though we've had some solid hard times with him he's a part of our family. I couldn't think of anything else to add to your video at the moment. Great job!

    I worked in the vet industry for 16 years. Portland, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Emergency visits can be WAY MORE than $2K! I have personally seen bills get up to $14K. I very much disagree with the no pet insurance.

    • @FinancialCoachJess
      @FinancialCoachJess  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Of course they can be more. But usually they are not. 2k is actually generous as the average emergency vet bill is between $800-$1500. As with anything having a pet is a risk! It’s up to every owner what level of risk they are comfortable with. However, if you run the numbers and minimize risk at home, pet insurance does not help the average owner come out ahead.

    Good video! There is one thing though that everybody keeps forgetting to mention when it comes to budgeting for dogs. Training cost!!! That can be a big expense. If your dog has severe behavior problems you won't be able to solve that just by watching TH-cam videos and taking them to PetSmart classes. You will need a private trainer experienced with behavior modification and that can easily cost $100/lesson or more.
    I'm a trainer and see that all the time, family adopts a dog and budget for everything, except training. And then their new dog starts having separation anxiety, reactivity, aggression, or other problems and the family doesn't have the money to help the dog, who goes back to the shelter.

    • @FinancialCoachJess
      @FinancialCoachJess  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SO TRUE!! Thanks for bringing that up. Probably costs more than $100/lesson but so worth every penny!

      @@FinancialCoachJess I'm a trainer and usually charge $100/lesson. More if i have to travel, a bit less if it's a virtual lesson or some easy stuff. But so many people are just not prepared for this cost!

    it makes a lot of sense about not getting a pet insurance. but what about in the case of people with different realities? for me, having $2000 saved is not a small thing, I actually dont have that. I thought about saving each month what I would spend with the pet insurance, and slowly I would get to $2000. but what if something happens to the pet before I reach the $2000? what do you think about this? is it better to have a pet insurance in this case?

    • @FinancialCoachJess
      @FinancialCoachJess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would still hustle for a few months, work all the side jobs and get $2000 saved up asap. Are you currently on a budget or just spending whatever’s left after bills?

      @@FinancialCoachJess I just moved to canada so I'm living on savings atm and its all properly budgeted for specific things. i have pet insurance covered in this budget for the next 3 months.. after that i should already be pretty estabilished here and earning enough to pay for the subsequent pet insurance months. but im a student in my 20s, i dont think i can save $2000 easy enough.. i can only work 20 hours a week

    Spaying and neutering is actually a bit of a debated topic and I'll have to disagree with the time frame you provided. It's best for the dog's long term health to be spayed or neutered after full development. There are quite a few studies that show spaying or neutering as early as you stated can lead to a drastic increase in fear aggression and insecurity, particularly in female dogs. Please let your dogs reach full maturity before you cut them off of their hormones, especially larger breeds that generally aren't mature until after 2 years of age. Hormones are necessary for proper physical and mental development. It's a great way to prevent accidental litters, but spay/neuter your dogs responsibly for their best health.
