I didn't realize it as a kid and I don't care much about wrestling now, but Gene Okerlund played the greatest straight-man in the history of television when he was with the WWF/WWE.
Gene Okerlund almost made it look legit. That's how amazing of a broadcaster he was.... he took the outlandish bullshit that we were watching and made us believe that it was real. No one else could have done that better.
As much as I love Macho Man Savage, Gene’s straight man act made Savage’s promo even more legendary. Especially when Savage started pulling stuff out of nowhere. Namely, the “Cup of Coffee” and the “Cream of the Crop” speech.
Im a fossil, so, things started for me watching "Bob Luce Wrestling" on television in Chicago in the 60's as a kid, and the absurdity of the spectacle had me hooked for years.
Mean Gene was part of making my child hood happy. Guys like Mean Gene and Jim Ross were like the announcer at a Big Top Circus. They just had the gift to sell entertainment.

Karen Catizone Their chemistry on camera was amazing. Genes straight faced seriousness was the perfect balance to Randys outrageousness. 30 years later I still find myself cracking up watching their work. Awesome entertainers, both of them.
I met with Randy on several occasions. He was a great guy to me and my family. He took pictures every time he saw me and my son. My favorite was in Baltimore in his dressing room with Ms Elizabeth. He played with my son while I sat and talked to his wife. He was very protective of her but he always let his guard down when we were with him. My family and I miss him very much. Truly one Macho Man. He was the best
I was sent down to the WWF from Boston as a Killer Kowalski student that was being used as an extra or enhancement talent but slot of the wrestlers liked me so they hung out with me before,during and after matches so that's how I got to meet them. My son was only 7 but he was in love with Elizabeth and she loved him too. So we all became great friends
Oh man the one when Macho said "your nose is crooked Jean" and Jean shot right back "Well your beard is crooked!" and Macho started doing his quick angry movements, was hilarious!
Brother, the Macho Man is *diving off of* those Pearly Gates, and dropping the big elbow on every wrestler who gets past St. Peter. And any time a new arrival asks Savage how he got into Heaven after living the wild life he did, the Macho Man just floats over to him, pulls a little plastic cup of coffee creamer out of thin air, and reminds him that "the CREAM! always rises to the top, yeah."
Notice that when asked to recite Randy’s entrance, Gene refers to him as “The WWE champion of the world” even when he could have called him WWE’s Intercontinental Champion, and rightfully so. In Gene’s mind, it’s clear who the true champ was…
I grew up watching you as a kid Mr Okerlund, interviewing top wrestlers without laughing or skipping a beat, witty questions and sometimes enough smart funny comebacks 😅, RIP you made my childhood memorable and was a huge part of my wrestling watching career😂

On his feet or flying off the top rope with the elbow. I have heard that he was very protective of Elizabeth to.the point where he'd lock her in a closet so the other guys couldn't get near her.

Mean Gene was always Lo Key flirting with Miss Elizabeth and triggering The Macho Man, it was funny but Macho Man was really overprotective of Miss Elizabeth in real life too. Macho Man was the real deal yeah!

I never got into wrestling, but now, lately, I’m really coming to see how genius these guys were. The repeating joke of Gene coming onto Elizabeth... And Macho Man- what a dude. He was just having a blast and F-ING with everyone with that character, and it was awesome.
Me too. People seem to idolize Jim Ross so much, and I have much respect for JR too, but for me, "Mean" Gene is the best non-wrestling personality not named Bobby Heenan. Even before Savage died, I missed him. Savage delivered a punch with so much flair (no pun intended) that no one could compare. Everything he did was golden.
Rule #2 in interviewing: Know the correct termanology of the topic. ie: "how would you announce him at the GAME??" "I think i know him best from his SLIM JIM COMMERCIALS??" WTF?!?!
To be fair, I think a lot of people discovered him through his Slim Jim commercials, especially after the Nostalgia Critic showcased them. Now the Macho Man's my favorite wrestler, and the reason I cannot stand modern WWE.

Mene Jene Was the greatest thing that happened to the WWF. When I was a kid in the early 80’s I enjoyed watching him and his interviews more than the wrestling matches, no ones ever had a voice like this man since then. The man is timeless and I dont think he’s aged in 40 years!
There's a great segment on an episode of Wrestling Challenge where Gene visits Randy and Elizabeth at "their home". A hilarious 5 minute gem that most have probably forgot or never seen. It's here on youtube and I highly recommend it.
What is the deal with these questions? "How would you announce Randy at the games?" "Randy and Elizabeth were married weren't they?" "Now he and Elizabeth divorced or did she pass away?" I understand you aren't a fan but as a reporter it's your job to do some research. You can tell she has no idea what is going on because when Gene starts saying he's been hearing from Roddy Piper and Ric Flair she is completely silent and Gene even mentions she has no idea who those people are. Could have been such a better interview.
I agree, the reporter sounds like a highschool kid interviewing someone for their public speaking class. She did zero research about the person she's asking questions from or the person she's asking about.

This woman is ridiculous. As an interviewer myself, she makes me just cringe. These questions show how amateur she is. I can just say that I wish it was me who did the interview and it would've been 100 times better. The only thing I can say to close out is #RestInPeace Macho.

What is the deal with these questions? "How would you announce Randy at the games?" "Randy and Elizabeth were married weren't they?" "Now he and Elizabeth divorced or did she pass away?"
I understand you aren't a fan but as a reporter it's your job to do some research. You can tell she has no idea what is going on because when Gene starts saying he's been hearing from Roddy Piper and Ric Flair she is completely silent and Gene even mentions she has no idea who those people are. Could have been such a better interview.
I agree, the reporter sounds like a highschool kid interviewing someone for their public speaking class. She did zero research about the person she's asking questions from or the person she's asking about.

This woman is ridiculous. As an interviewer myself, she makes me just cringe. These questions show how amateur she is. I can just say that I wish it was me who did the interview and it would've been 100 times better. The only thing I can say to close out is #RestInPeace Macho.

Stumbled across this interview in my feed today. Something ran across my brain that completely baffled me.
Jake "the Snake" Roberts has outlived "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Miss Elizabeth, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and "Mean" Gene Okerlund. Never would've guessed that 20 years ago. Nevertheless...I miss em all. Wrestling today just ain't the same
He says the wrestling stars of today is as big as they were back then. But man... The last true big star as far as im concerned was Stone Cold Steve Austin. In fact i dare to say he may be the best. He damn near single handedly put WCW under.

It's the raw tape of an interview meant to be cut into soundbites for a news story. Her asking the questions would never have been shown in the final product, and I'd bet only three sound clips of Gene at most were ever used for what was probably a 45-second piece.
