Bought a Emonda SL6 full ultegra mechanical 2yrs ago at £1800. Now at nearly 3k for a 105 bike really grates. Think I’m going to stick with my Trek. Bike prices seem to be inflated beyond belief at the moment. Massive jump to the next model up too. Still a great video though. 👍

The prices of bikes today… I bought a brand new, carbon TCR 105 rim brake for substantially less than this in 2020, there’s no way this is worth £1000 more.

I bought a new aluminium road bike with 105 groupset and rim brakes for just 7999 NOK ( 655 GBP) in August 2021. After changing the wheels, tyres and saddle for 5000 NOK (409 GBP) the weight is now less than 8.4 Kg (less than this Cannondale with 8.8 Kg) Yes, aluminium frames are cheaper than carbonfibre frames, but my bike does have carbonfibre in essential parts like the saddle and the fork.

Great review. I've got the 2020 version on mechanical Ultegra, as per your video I've already made some of the upgrades you suggest, mine has the HG35 wheels which I've changed for the Conti GP5000TLs (the wheels are tubeless ready) and changed the saddle, two easy mods made the bike even better. One thing I notice on descents is that it without pedaling it catches other bikes, so there must be some aero trickery going on (or I'm just heavier!).

  • @rangersmith4652
    @rangersmith4652 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Good new road bikes in 2022 are no bargain. Pretty much everything under a grand USD is heavy and spec'd at a decidedly entry level. Most 105 bikes are pushing toward and over two grand. Paying nearly three grand for a 105 bike is just a complete non-starter for me, and probably should be for everyone.

    • @glennoc8585

Tbh 105 is very good and hardly a weight penalty. If you have a really nice set of wheels and tyres and maybe get a lighter crankset later on.

I like the fluro color for safety and it does improve the ride whenever motorists can see and avoid you. And I'm even wearing a fluro safety vest these days and it does seem to help. And David, for sure, whenever you do a test, just use your favorite saddle and get that out of the way. Saddles and pedals are definitely a personal preference. Even tires, ain't nothing but a thing to install your favorites and make that a non-issue, too. As is, you are saying the obvious, hey, I don't like the saddle, I don't like the tires, other than that, let's talk.

  • @stephen4347

The price leap to £4k is a bit much.

I'd like to see more reviews of lower end bikes. The top tier bikes are super cool and all but the prices are ridiculous and not realistic for most people. That being said 3 grand for a 105 bike seems ridiculous too. Taxes, pedals, head unit and your pushing $3500 and you still have basic wheels. Last winter I picked up an essentially unridden 105 emonda with upgraded wheels for $1350. I added pedals, head unit, power meter , varia radar and I'm just over $2000. For me the used bike market is the way to go.

The new technology that's making top-end bikes better is also making the bikes for the rest of us worse and more expensive (on top of all the other craziness in the world).
In 2018 for £1600 I got a nice carbon frame, Fulcrum Quatro wheels, and full Ultegra (Orro Gold). I used to look at the new bikes coming along and feel tempted, but not the past few years!

    • @philthewriter

About 6 or 7 years back I went bike shopping, and there were so many sub £2k options I was tempted by. Did the same again this year, and didn't see anything I wanted for under £4-5k, and still a downgrade over the components I already have at that price. Bollocks to that, doubt I'll ever buy a new bike again.

Not bad for a base spec bike! Great that it's a carbon frame unlike the Specialized Allez Sprint (which alot of my friends had trouble selling when they upgrade to Tarmac SL7) which is an aluminium frame.
The Supersix Evo isn't Cannondale's Aero bike unlike the SystemSix. It's their climbing bike. But considering I've seen the previous gen Hi-Mods being built to 3-5kg with pedals, it's insane! Hoping this new bike lives up to it.
Definitely would upgrade to mechanical SRAM Red 22 or Dura-ace R9100 instead though. The parts aren't really the best of cannondale considering Cannondale has the HollowGram Si and SiSL2 parts which are lighter. The wheelset also isn't that great. But as a frame, it seems like a great bike.

Cannondale can put some horrible saddles on their bikes. I sold them for years. One year they were using Prologo saddles that were finished to match their bikes paint schemes. But customers were returning complaining about the saddles. The Prologo Scratch. Always great riding bikes (Hi- Mods feel even better), but you need "PAS" models when it comes to the Prologo brand of saddles (the Kappa Pas is my favorite). Then you have to upgrade to the Hollowgram stem and proprietary bar to match those spacers and you are a few hundred dollars more in the hole. You use a regular stem and you will see that huge slot in front of the stem where the brake cables enter the top of the headtube. You can't have that...

What happened to the bike industry, the bikes were expensive 5 years ago but this is daft. My girlfriend wants to get in to cycling and 2k for an entry level bike isn't doable. Think is common folk will be buying 2nd hand bikes from now on. Wasn't cycling the sport for the working class....

You sure about that? There are still affordable options, here’s one example that is under your budget www.balfesbikes.co.uk/bikes/road-bikes/trek-emonda-alr-4-disc-road-race-bike-2022-in-red-to-marigold__18795?currency=GBP&chosenAttribute=1045475&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvKDE16P4-AIVQe7tCh2XpwNtEAQYASABEgI2ZfD_BwE

So saddle chng, tire chng, wheels change ofc, spacers look ugly, cable management is the worst of both worlds, complicated, yet exposed till the downtube, limited crank options, proprietary seatpost and bb standard. Yet more expensive then a TCR or a Scultura by around 40%.

£2,800 is expensive for what it is; if they put better wheels, tyres, on then it would be slightly better. However, it's the cheap wheels, and garbage tyres.

The cheapest supersix is the Caad13.

Any bike that costs 2 grand is better than 90% of cyclists' bike.
