I'm working on a headless at the moment, as it's also fretless , bridgeless and pupless...it may be more accurately described as a stick, but I'm working on it.

re: binding - as you are having to make it out of pieces anyway, could you incorporate fret dots into the binding? small pieces of fretboard material as square dots along it would hide the joints of the maple and use of smaller sections...
Whatever you do, it would look gorgeous!

I think I would love to have the entire thing mapped out and then execute it to perfection.. then again that also seems rather boring in the abstract doesn't it? I think the most important thing to me is learning, and trying new things as I go.. anyway, thanks for your support! B

For the inlay, you could have also mounted it to a waste block and used your lathe with very sharp tools to create both edges of the ring perfectly round.

Make a fretboard binding out of little strips of alternating colors, each strip as long as the distance between two frets. A sort of marquee pattern, I guess. That should look particularly interesting with the multi-scale thing.

I've not got to the point where you choose where to get the 'ring' from the burl, but I'd use the space where the control cavity cover is, and also make a ring of the same size from the neck material, and a fresh control cavity cover from some of the other neck wood so that you have a congruence of tied materials.

I have an old Spofford pattern brace, where the entire unit, including the split chuck to accept the bit, is forged from a single piece of steel. The rosewood knob is attached with a ring on the bottom, and the side handle is 2 pieces of rosewood held together with pewter rings. Love that stuff!!

I was working on some smaller circle inlays on my latest build more similar to the Raw Series. I found using various diameters of brass tube, chopped down and sharpened, worked as a decent replacement to a multi tool for getting fairly regular shaped circles. I’m not sure what crimson uses to drill those smaller circle inlays on your production guitars but it was a decent option in case you wanted to build another tool for yourself.

  • @lusinwood
    @lusinwood 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello, Ben, thank you for such an interesting content! I think the circles would be easier to make on a lathe. Tighten the circles to the piece of plywood or something with a bolt and put it in a chuck. Shape the outside and then with the parting tool the inside diameter. I am making jewelry from wood and resin and that is the way i am making round earrings.

Shaper Origin is a perfect tool for cutting a perfect circle (and for cutting the inlay pocket, for that matter). No jig necessary and no center hole. Just lay out some tape and push the tool around, letting it do what it does. Kind of a spendy solution for a limited problem, but I have no doubt that you'd find plenty of really interesting uses for one at Crimson. Besides, I bet you have enough subscribers to get one for free if you just ask nicely. It seems like half the woodworking youtubers suddenly had shaper origin videos not too long ago and all around the same time...

@@CrimsonCustomGuitars It certainly makes inlays very easy and very accurate, though it wouldn't work on a radiused fretboard, so maybe of limited use for you. Everything else it does you can easily do on a full CNC, and the CNC would be faster. But if you want CNC capabilities at your home workshop, it is an excellent space saver. With the exception of the occasional inlay, I use mine exclusively for cutting out router templates and it works phenomenally well and doesn't occupy any space at all. And there is no real limit to template size. If I upgrade to a full CNC, it'll be sold, though. Price point is too high to keep it around for the small benefit it would provide over a CNC.

You do alot of oil finishes. You should check out crystalac brite tone. Low Voc, non toxic , not flammable, high solids content. Something you could use in your home shop without fear of health risk. I use it in my garage with a tent setup. I spray it, so I use a mask. It's good stuff.

Also I'm not affiliated with them at all. It's just a great product.

If someone tore down that kitchen, I will cry until my tears form an ocean, which I will drown that someone in.

I appreciate the eye and breathing protection while using the rotary tool. NOW PUT YOUR ISOTUNES IN TO PROTECT YOUR HEARING. I have yelled.

I would normally agree, but with such fine tolerances, and more to the point, delicate blades I prefer to hear exactly what is going on.. with all other machines etc you would be, of course, listened to and obeyed. B

Kiesel's Zeus Acoustic is a headless A/E; not a ton of air to get moved because it's tiny and designed more for the plugged-in sound than anything, but it works pretty well from what I hear. Definitely more on the E side of A/E, but it's there. Might need something like the ABM hardware that has a separate bridge and tailpiece with tuners, and put the tailpiece on the bottom support for the sides so you're not weighing down the top too much.
    . . . archtop acoustic headless, anyone?
