At the MMA Lab we worked something kind of like what you do but slightly different. It’s called “the sag” and is a movement the team stole from watching Kamaru Usman. Rather than doing a sort of Uchi Mata like move to a knee tap, we step a little further back and hook the leg from behind, then kick our leg back and drop our weight, “sagging” our weight down and back which drags the person down.
This also sets up a Khabib style Dagestani Handcuff position nicely when you then triangle around the leg you “sagged.”

There's a counter to every move. The armbar has so many possible ways to escape it, counter it and pass guard, not let it happen in the first place. Especially with throws--every throw in judo has 10 possible counters. Yet people who specialize in it still find a way to make the technique happen.

Just an idea, don't put your hand on their back. Treat the underhook more as an omoplata with the arm and keep it closer to his elbow. Then drive with your elbow in his ribs or armpit. It is a bit like ippon seonagi on the arm. It's not bullet proof, but it will keep them from slipping out so easily. Don't abandon techniques, refine them.

Funnily, every Judo player can immediately see that Icy Mike's suggested throw won't work. What would work very we'll in this situation though would be a Judo throw you hate: a hip throw.

Either ankle pick or push towards the swept leg. Sweeping someone and pushing the other way is not very useful.
Taking out the whizzer is a free back take.

Not really- every conceivable move has a counter, this guy is just pointing out the one that works for this scenario. That doesn't make the initial move bad.
For example, if somebody had me in a full guard on the ground, there are ways to pass that guard- does that mean the guy in guard shouldn't try to maintain his guard? Obviously not.
Grappling is a game of rock paper scissors, and there's never going to be any one move without a counter

  • @MikePierce170

Yes! This will work on your little brother, anyone asleep at the wheel and people who have no clue what they're doing 😂.
This is the equivalent of those "No Touch" artists conning everyone to play along with their nonsense.
But to be fair, Icy Mike's takedown from that position is relatively low percentage, and easy to defend.
This blind leading the blind stuff is a real train wreck. At least it's good for a quick laugh. Keep these comedy bits going! 😂
