There are a couple of videos demonstrating replacement of part number 242009602 Filter Base. None explain how the filter locks into the base. This video goes further to show us the disassembled housing and the actual base. In my opinion, this is a part that should have been recalled as defective. Imagine if this were a part on the steering mechanism of your car! I had the opposite problem. My filters would not lock into place. I pulled the assembly and discovered the rear part of the base was not locked to the front part of the base. When the filter was pushed, the locking mechanism moved toward the rear of the fridge by about 1/8". I also discovered how to unlock the filter without spending the $45 to have the part shipped to the house. Thanks to people like you for posting videos such as this. I didn't find your video till after I had explored and discovered the same information. During my next filter change, I will try the simple screwdriver release process. I didn't order a new base. Thanks again for taking the time to show folks good information.
Watch the replacement filter that the gear teeth line up even at bottom of filter (water holes facing down). Sometime instead of push up with screwdriver, you have to push down (from above). Another person on here noticed this. I recreated symptom with my old parts.
I looked at a few including boiling water & hair dryer. I knew that didn’t make sense, why would those lines freeze up. In disgust I sat back down and found your review, in minutes all was done and food put away. Bravo!!!! Ty so much!
This was extremely helpful...saved a service call! I’ve been wrestling with these cartridge change-outs for some time. Great to have a simple DIY video to remedy the issue. Very much appreciated.
I tried a couple of other suggestions posted on TH-cam but this one worked. I removed the filter cover held by a single screw located under the light cover. I then located the small plastic tab shown in this video and while pushing up with a small screwdriver I pushed on the filter. It released instantly and I was able the fit the new filter. Many thanks for the video it was very helpful.
You're a life saver! I tried everything to get my stuck water filter removed: manufacturer's instructions, extreme force, a mallet, harsh language. Nothing worked. I did another TH-cam search and found your video. The filter was removed and off and a couple of seconds. Thank you!
Thank you so much!!!! Worked like a charm! I watched 6 videos before I found yours and none worked. Super grateful to you. May your kindness come back tenfold!!
Just moved into a house that has this filter system, and the filter was stuck, this was the exact solution! Thank you! Most other sites said “push up on the plastic”. WHICH piece of plastic though?! Thank you for making it clear!
Best explanation I’ve seen! I was trying to press on the wrong plastic part cause no one else was showing it in a detailed way so thank you so much! I finally got mine unstuck!❤
Thanks for your advice and video. It worked for me and now I just have to get the new filter to hook up. UPDATE It proved to be more difficult to install the filter than get it unstuck. I removed all of the housing, determined how to line up the teeth of the filter to the teeth of the housing and it caught using a screwdriver to shift the housing teeth. Whoever designed this should go back to school. Miller time now.
Great Bill. Someone posted awhile back that some off brand filters have the teeth shifted enough so the filter won't go in or out. He was right. I proved it with a old filter by shifting the filter's teeth. Something to watch for. Glad yours ended at the Miller bar.
That is exactly what happened to me today. After several attempts at removing mine....................... and not having seen this video this is what happened. I posted this on my FB page it is unbelievable but true. I went to replace our refrigerator water filter today and could not get it out. I have replaced it probably a dozen times so there is no question that I know how. It was a generic water filter but I have never used OEM filters because the generics were far cheaper. So now this is the first time using that certain generic. I figure I just finally got a bad generic product. I worked and worked trying to get the old filter out. I took the entire housing that it goes into out of the refrigerator and tried to get it out. I pushed and pulled and looked on line and followed the advice of others in the same boat. They advised against the use of generics and I know why. I had it narrowed down to buying a new water filter base since I could not separate the base from the filter. Donna told me to wait until tomorrow and relax from trying. I mean I pushed and pulled and hit with a hammer repeatedly. When Donna and I came in from the back porch I opened the frig door and looked at the filter. It was OUT of the filter base. It was UNSTUCK and just sitting there. I immediately knew it was UNDONE and just reached up and pulled it out. I then replaced it with another of the same kind so I can do it all over again in about six months. LOL I really did use the same kind but can see no reason why this happened anyway. But how did that happen? God is great.
While my issue wasn't exactly as you described, it did give me insight into how to fix my Frigidaire water filter issue. The toothed "gear" on the filter itself came loose - either before or after I attempted to forcibly remove the stuck filter. After I got it disengaged, the old filter came right out. For my replacement filter, I am using instant glue to affix the gear and pre-lubricating the locking pawl with cooking oil for next time. Thank you!
This helped, however I had to push the lever down from the top rather than up from the bottom. I had to take the whole assembly apart to get to it. Seeing how the lever works in your video helped. Thanks.
Saved me from having to call the repair man. One screw under the light bulb cover, it pivots up to remove the water filter cover and a little pushing with a screwdriver and filters replaced !!
Gracias, me sirvió mucho. Thanks I hope do It. También le cambié los dientes, le puse los dientes del filtro viejo al nuevo, y como viene en el vídeo moví hacia arriba y me quedó. Que bueno que existen estos videos.😅
This is the solution and the problem was that I put a twist and pull filter in the fridge instead of the push and release filter. For whatever reason they make both and they are both the same size. If you have a similar problem make sure your filter type is the same as what was originally installed.
This is the spring base www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Filter-Support/242009602/4585679 I bought one. This site also has nice video how to repair. Perfect fit for me. My filter is located in top right, French Door. Freezer is lower drawer. For safety, shut off water to Fridge. Easy job.
I can vouch for this too. You can accomplish this without removing the base from the fridge. You just take the light cover off, remove one screw, then slide the plastic fixture surrounding the filter out of the way. Jamming the screwdriver up takes a bit of force, but I heard a small click and the filter came right out!
Mine did this for the first time ever today. And I don’t understand it. Is there some thing that I’m doing wrong that I could be doing to prevent this from happening again. I don’t want to take my machine apart every time I change the filter, you know what I mean? Should I just replace the base? I couldn’t detach the waterlines when I tried.

That all fine and dandy but how the heck can you do what you don't show is that filter is pushed in flush at bottom of the fridge so there is NO room to put tools to get this out 😮
I'd like to buy you a drink. My filter has been stuck for 2 years. Seriously I want to send you $10. Venmo? Google pay? Not sure how to send you a private message
I had the same trouble in the past. Managed to get the filter out but would not click into place. A sore back later, it finally clicked and locked onto place. 6 months later it would not click back out without the screwdriver approach. A sure sign the spring action is tired. Time to replace the base socket I show in my hand. Not hard to do. If you have not found the base replacement video, let me know. I can find the link.

Out of all the videos about this, you are the ONLY one that suggested this and the ONLY ONE that actually worked. Thank you!!
I looked at a few including boiling water & hair dryer. I knew that didn’t make sense, why would those lines freeze up. In disgust I sat back down and found your review, in minutes all was done and food put away. Bravo!!!! Ty so much!
Had to watch 3 videos - this was the first one that actually showed me what I needed to do
This was extremely helpful...saved a service call! I’ve been wrestling with these cartridge change-outs for some time. Great to have a simple DIY video to remedy the issue. Very much appreciated.
Very helpful video. Yours is the only one I could find that demonstrated the latch operation. Many thanks!
This is what I struggled with. Replaced the whole thing. Wished I had this video. Glad to help others.

Fantastic tip! Little screwdriver to push the plastic up worked perfectly, without having to remove assembly! God bless you for the insight!
This is my go to video to change my filter. Many thanks to you my friend.
This just saved mine....thank you! seeing the mech and what you have to push up worked immensely along with a mirror
Thanks! It worked. It took quite a few tries to get the screwdriver in the right place and move it just right, but eventually, the filter did pop out.
Thank you so much!!!! Worked like a charm! I watched 6 videos before I found yours and none worked. Super grateful to you. May your kindness come back tenfold!!

You are my hero, saved the day. Works great on Frigidaire Gallery.
I too have a Frigidaire Gallery. Please read my comment as what happened to me was miraculous. Remember that I never saw this video.
Thanks I spent a few hours looking to "unstuck" this water filter. This video helped out finally.

This video is up close on the filter teeth alignment. th-cam.com/video/YtWrYWm1obA/w-d-xo.html

Just what the doctor ordered! Tried the deicing technique from someone else but this was my problem and the solution.

The best video for this problem. Thanks a lot. More power Sir!

Good advice....my neighbor has twist type. On the outside, they look the same.
Thanks!!! This worked for me!!!
This is the video you are looking for.
Thank you so much!!!!
Thankyou for the info.
Thanks, I took that "thing" apart that holds those pesky springs, can you save me looking up the part#?

This is cool and all, but how do you get it out of the bottom of the fridge!

Good looking out
My filter won't click in. Bought a new filter base and still won't click in. What am I missing?
where is inlet located? left or right? thanks
Don't know...why does it matter for a filter change?
That all fine and dandy but how the heck can you do what you don't show is that filter is pushed in flush at bottom of the fridge so there is NO room to put tools to get this out 😮
Thank you!,,,,
