Honestly, I think that when he returns to pitching. He should return as a reliever. Keeping in mind that he has had two major arm surgeries at this point. He’s proven in the WBC that he can be a closer. I think that if he made the transition to a closer, his already star studded career, could become even more amazing. From all-star starter, to power hitter, to shutdown closer.
Biggest issue is, unlike fields in japan, bullpen in US arenas are not connected to the dugout. So he will need to expend energy going to the bullpen and back. Also if lets say he is batting in the bottom of the 8th and he needs to pitch top of 9th he will have barely any warmup.
There had been a debate about this from he was in Japanese league, and the majority conclusion was that starter was the best. This was not because of the difference in value between a starter and a reliever, It was simple reason from the standpoint of conditioning. While starters can make planned adjustments according to the rotation, relievers are expected to scramble. This is a noticeable difference considering Ohtani's "play style". Ohtani could definitely serve as a reliever / closer, but if there is an opportunity to do so, it would be on some of final games in the regular season or any serieses, like in the WBC. Or, in the twilight of his career, he may emerge as an option for his no longer being an every-day player.
