this is so cool! I just recently turned my designer eye toward working on combating desertification. My approach would compliment this, and vice versa.
Italy did the same, without mechanization, during the fascist era in Libya and Somalia, breaking dunes, planting grids of trees and bushes to stop the wind and sand, providing pits to collect rainwater for livestock. Our settlers had to wet every tree by bringing water with hard work. Results was impressive. But after World War II every achievement was thwarted because our colonies became independent.
China’s deserts are predominantly in colder climates, than most other deserts. For example in Australia the deserts have 18 times more evaporation than rainfall. So you can’t plant a forest and hope it will survive. An Australian forest might take decades or even centuries of human support to take hold.

The expanding deserts are a problem in China, but they need to be careful about removing too much in the name of agriculture. Deserts play a role in the ecosystem. Hopefully they are aware of this.
