Great tutorial,i love ska origional Like,prince buster,Desmond dekker,toots and maytels,right to the 2nd wave 2 tone,the specials,selector,the beat and madness,thats how i got into ska,loved the baggy trousers riff you did,i only started to learn how to play guitar a yr an a half ago,id never held a guitar before im 47,but i can play a few bits and pieces and i want to learn the ska beat,thanks
I had to teach myself when i started in the mid 90s. I holdmy chords down and mute with my picking hand. It gives it a little more pop on the percussive mute, plus no accidental harmonics or notes that slip out. Other guitarist that see me play are confused because they dont see the mute, lol. I guess my way is hard to learn and my wife wants to learn. I will definitly get her to watch this.
HighAngle Larry dude I was just saying this . No offense but I personally hate this technique. If you mute with your right hand it sounds more poppy and short like ska. Instead of like a folk sounding upstroke
Your video helped so much thank you- what lead me to your channel was a life long conundrum- (I’m 70) namely ; how to begin a song on the upstroke..I see in sheet music (Christmas carols etc the first couple of words are before the bar.?.
Thanks,I learned something from you new about playing faster-"relax more". Besides my not yet being able to read music (but that's fine , let the more experienced people read it and learn. I'm still working on it), everything else is helpful about strumming. Now on to practicing..
Great video, most bands I've seen don't know you're supposed to downstroke the ska beat on guitar for traditional ska. The years listed were a bit off though and you enmeshed rocksteady and reggae. 58-63 = Jamaican Style Rhythm & Blues aka Blues Beat (not blue beat like the label) aka Boogie Woogie. 64-66 = Jamaica's first national music called Ska. Double beats = Reggae. Triple beats or more = early reggae aka skinhead reggae.
