Barenboim is second-rated pianist! The weak poor Gramophone magazine selected Barenboim's Mozart concertos their 50 greatest recordings list! That 50 greatest list do not have Richter no Gilels No Solomon no Lipatti no Sokolov no Pletnev but Barenboim and second-rated Aleksandr Melnikov his Shostakovich CD is the top 50! Are you kidding me! You must be joking Gramophone! Melnikov and Barenboim better than Richter and Gilels! Crazy world we are living!!
What a huge pleasure to see Ashkenazy and Barenboim interacting with each other and with other musicians. They are both so interesting, kind, charming, fun, talented. It strikes me that they are both straight but don't act over masculine and rough like so many guys I know. Instead, they speak gently with such charm that conquers everyone around.
I was lucky enough to be in the audience with my Aunt and cousin in 1966. My Grandma died that day, 11 March. We did not know she was dying but she was very ill. It was wonderful balm for the soul. I am 80 now and glad I can remember it so well. So glad to find this documentary and recording.
Wonderful. Saw and heard this in 1967. What a privilege, being able to watch it again at age 76! Thank you, TH-cam, Barenboim, Ashkenazy, Christopher Nupen.
What a treat, seeing these two musical giants together. So young and boyish, yet so immensely talented and accomplished. Many thanks for making this available.
I love how much confidence and authority Baremboim has at that young age while still being a lovely person. You could tell right then and there that dispite their age both him and Ashkenazy are in a league of their own.
This whole video is pure joy, on so many levels!!! Thank you for posting. The youth, the energy, the friendship, the rapport... And Ashkenazy is incredibly cute here!
Thank the genius who decided to film and memorialize these parts - behind the scenes is so interesting and what a cool thing to see these 2 incredible and great masters as friends and playing off each other
I love Barenboim's "no air please...yeeesss" at 20:00. I keep coming back to this video because I just can't believe how YOUNG Barenboim was. It's really mind-blowing to be not only a pianist at this level but conducting too; not just the technical level but the self-confidence he had (which is not the same thing as arrogance.) I guess when thrust into the adult world of classical music as a very young child prodigy, you become almost a miniature adult very quickly.
I just watched it for the 1st time. I agree on what you wrote. He is only 23 with a lot of trust and push from the greatest legends of that time, it is quite easy to get this confidence. He shows to be childish and adult at the same time.
Thank you, Christopher Nupen, for such a wonderful documentary (and for "The Trout", too!) I love getting some deep background on Barenboim and Ashkenazy, seeing the rehearsals, backstage and of course, the performances. It's hard to believe that 50 yrs. could have passed since this documentary was made; they were so young and beautiful then!
Commovente vedere entusiasmo di questi due grandissimi artisti che confermeranno il.lprobyakento negli anni futuri !! Grazie Daniel e Wladimir per quanto ci avete dato jn questi lunghi anni!!!@
I'm struck by the fact that the English Chamber Orchestra had a number of female members during the 60's, when most orchestras of note had few to none during that era! Kudos to that organization and their forward thinking!
Merci
This recording is special to me because was the one that got me into classical music, but is the first time that I see the documentary of it, so thank you so much for posting this!
Gracias.
It is very exciting & entertaining to see these two gifted pianists bounce around at the keyboard with that marvelous orchestra playing behind them. You get the sensation of a playful Mozart or young piano prodigy just enjoying a day in his life. It's so blissful; & getting to wave their arms around is just an added treat. Its like a classical music pep rally. Daniel Borennboim has the expressions & vocal tonality of one of my former co-workers in the Electro-Optics Laboratory at Raytheon Company, so I wonder if they have the same nationality? No, they don't, because Tom Panageotopolis was Greek. I wonder why the similarities? Great video, especially the formal concert! Wow! Exquisite footage! At 33:22, those pianos have their cover boards completely removed! OMG. The collaboration in that 1st rehearsal "10:20"and the sound is blissfully wonderful! Bravo! Dan is right, "Very good, very good!"
I like what you said about "a playful Mozart or young piano prodigy just enjoying a day in his life"; I think that's very much how how Barenboim was as a young man. Re Barenboim reminding you of a Greek co-worker: he speaks six languages FLUENTLY (Spanish, Hebrew, German, French, Italian and English) (many YTube videos over the years, though a video where he's speaking Italian was hard to find!). Maybe that's why he reminds you "vocally" of your friend?
Well all these people who nit-pick to see who is the best musician!! To me they are both brilliant and have enjoyed many recordings by both. If I had just a quarter of their talent I would be happy...
Ashkenazy was already well known in the West from the beginning of the 60s. He was established in the USSR right from his late teens and toured America in 1958, albeit with a Soviet official in tow. Indeed this memorable concerto performance with Barenboim further established his reputation in this country, but it was not his breakthrough as such. At this early stage of his illustrious career Ashkenazy possessed a brilliant mastery of the instrument along with great musical sensitivity. I'm sure when the time comes he'll be remembered as one of the truly great pianists of the second half of the last Century.
Amazing to see early films Gilels watching Barenboim. Ashkenazy 's wife must have been an impressive pianist ! Who made Barenboim learn first Brahms Sonata gee at 15 playing op.106 !
When talent such as this is unappreciated, unvalued, unrecognised....it disappears. Just as the planet's wildlife that we value only as meat is steadily disappearing. And 50yr after this concert, the 'talents' we now value and which are now flourishing....are makers of prank- and putting-on-makeup- videos. One has to conclude that the apogee of our civilisation is behind us.
Daniel Barenboim has a certain elegant softness in his way of playing... And still so precise, clear, so distinct. I'm addicted to his recordings!!
I find DB's style of piano playing to be somewhat orchestral.

His EMI Mozart Concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra still sounds wonderful

I think they both marry their sweethearts the year after.

Well said!
Hearhear!!! 🎶🎶🎶
Barenboim started out with such promise, but never delivered. Nothing new and nothing profound.
I love how much confidence and authority Baremboim has at that young age while still being a lovely person. You could tell right then and there that dispite their age both him and Ashkenazy are in a league of their own.

I feel very lucky to have the privilege to listen to these
two giants. So beautiful ! It was 50 years ago .
ashkenazy was a short ass ?
This film is absolute gold. Two of my favorite pianists/conductors rehearsing together. Imagine being the next door neighbor at the time.
I have had so many transcendent moments with Ashkenazy and Barenboim separately. This is.....marvellous .

Two fantastic musicians.... What a wonderful performance from them both... Most enjoyable..........
A great privilege to see and hear this wonderful performance.
Amazing talent. I cannot believe Daniel Barenboim was just 23 at the time. And both played without sheet music! My favourite bit is 53:33!
I do agree with you 100%
I have watched this so many times and love it every time. Such incredible talent
I want to see Daniel Barenboim live so badly! It’s my life-long dream!

Would rather have had the privilege to see and hear his future wife Jacqueline du Pre.
Those were the days! Saw both DB and VA in Sydney in the 70s. Fond memories of a simpler time.
How wonderful!!
This is how friends treat each other. So humble and respectful. Foundation for creating masterful performance. Thank you both for sharing your talent

These guys know how to play Mozart. The new generations should learn from them.
I agree. Mozart`s ghost was there . Have you seen the Barenboim`s Beethoven masterclasses ?

Beautiful playing.
Fantastic .. my early Sunday morning evasion. 😘😘
D. Barenboim war hier gerade einmal 24 Jahre alt. Super machte er das!!!!
23😂
Amid all

This concert made Ashkenazy world famous. It was his breakthrough.

I love this part. Two geniuses at work
pianist : Ashkenazy > Barenboim
conductor : Barenboim > Asheknazy
I mean to each their own. It's a very fair evaluation
At 16:16 Barenboim uses the expression "putting in alcohol"... I haven't heard that before.
I might be wrong, but I think is Argentinian. I have certainly heard Argentinians use it (in Spanish)
Even John Williams was there .. Magnificent...
Two genius's
Legend.🎼
A great performance! (Vladimir had one helluva cowlick back then.)
maravilhoso
Ashkenazy and Barenboim - two small men with big ambitions.
Deux jeunes pianistes, brillant, talentueux, bel hommes ce qui ne gâche rien.
I do prefer Ashkenazy's colours and force of sound. He directs it from different sources ...
Barenboim reminds me a bit of actor Jean Reno, with a touch of Michael Imperiolli
This is so fucking cool!
