  • masterguitaracademy.com - a slick blues fusion jazz whatchamacallit it - lick. Sounds so good over the common "i to IV chord progression". Here it's being played over Em7 to A7. Hope you dig it!

    Thanks Robert..it's all about giving back. I have kids running in and out of my studio with little guitar cases constantly...and I do most of it for free. These videos take a lot of time and effort to make and it says a lot about you. Thanks !

    great lick and demo. I especially like how you explain WHAT you're doing, not just how to do it. I use this sort of stuff all the time, but the two things that brought it all together for me was Gmaj9th arpeggio (i've been in the maj7th rut) and the passing tone to get to A7 lick.

    That is a cool melodic phrase dude. Learned it quick with repeates then permutations and I’ve got 3 or 4 good ones too. Takes you out of your fingers doing duty instead of making music. Thanks

      It’s amazing how close together and then convoluted the triads w/just 3 note chromatic to connect them can be, especially when considering fingerings and positions! It’s hard in a way, but mostly reflects on how guitar is the most expressive a personal and instrument as there is. The phrasing that results from the tiniest position/change (where you’re picking/hammers/pull offs automatically result in a different sound) just amaze me when I find someone who gives me this gift, which turns a rut into a treasure trove in one swift move!

    Robert, you're killing me man. This is a ii-V, why in the world are you calling it a i - IV? You are gonna confuse people, cause I cannot believe it. But thanks all the same you are awesome! Maybe your groove never goes to D or Dm. But seriously, this is a ii-V in D.

    • @Dolphinstreets
      @Dolphinstreets  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I view the Em7 as the I so the V chord would be B7, and it's BLUES, so it doesn't follow the major scale harmonization rules. But you can view it however you like - it really does not matter as long as you know what you are doing. If it was ii - V, I would play some altered scale or diminished line over the V chord.

    • @Dolphinstreets
      @Dolphinstreets  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More correct? There is nothing incorrect at all about the way I play it here. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that.

  • @nicholassergiacomi4823

    Really cool lick! I'm relatively new to theory so I could be misunderstanding. But would this be a "ii to V" progression? and is it E Dorian? It would be appreciated immensely if you could help sooth my confusion! Thank you Robert!

    • @sandrashermanjazz
      @sandrashermanjazz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nicholas Sergiacomi, you are correct, it is a II-V. I don't know why the hell anyone would call this a I-IV. And because the minor chord is a II, you can use the E Dorian scale. For the V use the A mixolydian scale, which is the same root scale as E Dorian, namely D major scale. The difference are the focus notes in each mode. In E Dorian focus on the notes of the Em7 chord, E, G, B and D. During the A7 chord focus on A, C#, E and G. With focusing I mean play them on the beats and land on them. During the off beats you can use other scale notes or chromatic.
      Hope this helps,
      Your friendly jazz guitar teacher from Austria 😊

      Sandra Sherman thank you for replying! im glad to see im somewhat starting to grasp this stuff!!

    • @nicholassergiacomi4823
      @nicholassergiacomi4823 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandra Sherman now it got me thinking.. . lets say G ionian is I, A dorian is ii, B phrygian is iii, and so forth. This is the key of G major. But what if you are playing in the key of A Dorian? Is A not now the I? And B phrygian not now the ii?? And so forth? ... Or are those labels static where the G is always the l?

    • @sandrashermanjazz
      @sandrashermanjazz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nicholas Sergiacomi, well you could label it like that. But since the II-V-I cadence is a key element in jazz music, it wouldn't make much sense. We are trying to separate those important parts into, what I call a "micro cosmos".
      ie: iii-VI7-ii-V7 is a standard turnaround. But you should rather play it like a ii-V7-ii-V7.
      If you really consider the iii a iii, you would have to use the phrygian mode (which sou nds weird). But if you look at the combination with the following VI, you could also consider this as a micro cosmos of ii-V. Now you can use the Dorian scale over the ii, which is a lot more common.

    • @Dolphinstreets
      @Dolphinstreets  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sandra Sherman because it never resolves to D major, I view the Em as the tonic and A7 as the subdominant coming from the E Dorian. There is more than one way to analyze theoretical concepts and do whatever works for you.
