It can be hard to explain when someone isn't necessarily "good" at an instrument in the expected way, but is still talented and has an ear for what sounds good. You did a great job of that here, especially at 11:45 and on. Sometimes there are people who aren't actually, technically skilled at something, but the way they found ability to do it is pleasing to the ear. It's not for everyone, and it won't be featured in any greatest hits, but it has merit. And you can tell they put their all into it. My entire musical family disagrees with me and I know why, but an example I go back to is Russell Crowe as Javert in Les Misérables. I'm far from a jazz expert and not much of a musician, but it also seems (at least from the clips presented here) like he's very good at using playing dynamics and pushing and dragging time in a way that works really well with both the piece being performed and the rest of the band he's playing it with. It's subtler than flashy technical playing, but it's an important skill in itself and one that takes a lot of effort to learn to do well!

And, he knows how to work the crowd as well as anybody. In both clips Charles uses, he's not really looking at the audience or the camera. His eyes are defocused, because his mind is poised towards his connection with the other musicians and what they are all doing together. Emotional, physical, and intimate indeed.
"There are no wrong notes, you just lack confidence" - Jacob Collier And Jeff totally does that. He plays what he feels, going along with what just happens to happen.
They used to say “Miles can’t play like Dizzy” which might have been true when he first started working with Bird but then he showed that when he wanted to play high and fast he could, but it wasn’t his thing. Jeff Goldblum seems to have always been a jazz musician whose daytime gig was being an actor. His music sounds exactly like what we would expect because , in a very untypical way, he we knew his personality before we heard his music when a musician puts pure music and a real emotional style of playing you don’t get a lot of endless 16th notes. Jeff is a jazz pianist expressing himself in a very honest way.
Jeff Goldblum is a great example of loving playing music and that really shows. I love what you said about how it doesn’t matter how technically skilled someone is, they can still make great music. I could learn a thing or two from Jeff.
He plays jazz piano in both The Fly and Earth Girls Are Easy, if I remember correctly. He's a very accomplished pianist. Pretty impressive man, this Goldblum guy.
Really appreciate your positive attitude toward playing and your honesty about both your strengths and weaknesses in your own playing! You're the most positive jazz player and reviewer of jazz players I've personally seen on TH-cam. I think that's super important in the world of jazz because it can be so easy to get uptight and overly critical, especially of people entering the scene. Love to see it, man. Also love to see Jeff having a great time playing! You're absolutely right that he really seems to be having fun and playing what he hears. Something I admire about him, that he really seems to love taking risks and being himself. Good stuff man
Love hearing you talk about musicians and muscle memory! I feel like it's rarely talked about and it's honestly such a life saver when you need to whip out something quickly 😂
I've seen his show in LA at the Dresden Room, it's fantastic. I wouldn't call it a serious jazz show as much I would a jazz inspired show tune/standards romp that is part comedy. It's ok if he's not blowing you away with intricate counterpoint, he makes up for it with his charm, wit and stage presence. Its well worth seeing should anyone ever get a chance.
When Jeff was a piano tuning customer of mine, he once called me to find out if I knew what jazz venues were available where he'd play. I wasn't even aware at the time he was a performer.
I mean that fact he is playing along with 2 other musicians shows he has skill, regardless of how his playing sounds, to be in time and musically work in with the other members takes lots of rehearsal and practice. Props to him.
Randomly browsing/procrastinating and you've made a fan of me with this video! I love this lighthearted reaction to Jeff Goldblum the jazz pianist and how you find a way to segue into what makes music so meaningful and infectious! Your vulnerability is not taken for granted. Thank you!
If you check out the scene in the beginning of The Fly where he briefly sits down at the piano, I think that shows he's got some formidable technique at his disposal.
Super hip playing! Killin piano. Great feel, deep swing, perfect accents and just casual as can be. Dude has got it. The melodies roll off his fingers loosely and very nicely.
@@skylarsa 1. While he was explaining something at some point during the video, I had it in my head out of nowhere. 2. It would be interesting to see what he would've done different than what the studio musicians cut.
Yeah, once you find out he is a jazz musician his acting choices and the way he carries himself make alot of sense. He is quite an embodiment of Jazz and an example of mastery of craft transposing into life and action.
I love the way you recognized Jeff's risk taking and emotional drive in his playing. Do you think it's harder for a very technically proficient musician to try and play with more emotion OR do you think it's harder for a risk-taking "playing by ear/emotion" musician to start drilling technical stuff? Which stands out more in a performance?
I’m really interested in how you’d react to Bill Bailey’s take on jazz piano. He convincingly demonstrates how you can essentially get away with “playing anything at all,” though I have a feeling he’s actually so skilled that he just _makes_ it look like he’s only playing “whatever.”
Thank you so much for demonstrating your frustration when improvising with "feel". I try to commit to genuine and challenging improv and get very impatient when I can't perform as flawlessly as stuff I've written or learned, so its nice to know that it doesn't make me terrible 😃😅
maybe in these particular examples that’s his goal because he’s a good pianist? no snark btw i just feel like a man with his years of experience probably knows the difference between comping and playing a solo piece
That's because comping is different with soloing. Without the band, yes the piano track alone wouldn't sound as good/complete. But again, comping is different with soloing, so if he were to solo the same tune, he wouldn't play it like that.
Not really true, because everyoens tastes are different. Like like one guy who cut off his ear could be seen as crazy but to himself hes very cool so like
This is how I feel when I see him do anything. How does he talk that way? How does he play jazz too? How is he so stylish? And aging so enthusiastically, and also seems like a self reflective and decent guy. Also the whole dinosaur thing. And snazzy AND jazzy.
We have to pick the right songs to show him though. Not The Tom & Jerry Show or any of her sonicbloom series.. I’d like for him to listen through her album with Edmar Castañeda. Either that or the trio project
Wow, totally unexpected that Jeff Goldblum would be that good, but also I LOVED your nuanced analysis of his performance. Oh, and I loved your "listening" version... so much better than the autopilot.
Please could you analyze some more Snarky Puppy tunes? I'd appreciate them and a lot of Snarky fans would too. Not gonna be one of those "day 1 of asking Charles to..." users but I hope you see this all the same.
@@user-bk8ti4ys2r he touches on it in the three jazz solos that made me want to quit video and there's a full version of the Cory solo analysis on Nebula
This is really cool. There's something a lot more intimate sounding in the non-autopilot way of playing. It feels more considered, and intentional. It's not just a bunch of fancy filler. Jeff is awesome. There something amazingly trippy about what he does around 11:35 that I absolutely love. It's like he took this kind of generic tune and went Mwandishi on it. Love it.

Lmao best jazz musicians just look like that. I'm trying to learn technical shit while still playing from my head.
"There are no wrong notes, you just lack confidence" - Jacob Collier
And Jeff totally does that. He plays what he feels, going along with what just happens to happen.
Maybe react to Hugh Laurie playing jazz? He's been playing for years and has several albums and songs
Yes! I love him, my dad had one of his cds in his car. Him playing/singing Battle of Jericho and st james infirmary are just *chefs kiss*
@@Natalie-101 His St. James is legitimately good.
He's more blues than Jazz isn't he? Not that that really matters, I thought about him at the beginning if the video too. Would be cool to see.
Yesssssss please this
YES! I was just thinking this. I caught his New Orleans jazz style tour and it was really what opened me up to jazz.
This video made me realize why Keith Jarrett (and others!) vocalize as they improvise. It helps avoid playing on autopilot.
Yup! I've watched "The Fly" a couple of days ago and asked myself if that was really him. Now I know! =]
Good stuff man
I’d love to watch Jeff Goldblum react to your reaction because your giggles were pretty spectacular.
Thanks a lot.... I love you too
You can reach when i have time i will reply to you okay. jgoldblum60@gmail.com
Lol, his guitarist John Storie is my jazz teacher :P dude is a real professional
Your autopilot version is what most improvisational jazz sounds like to my untrained ear.
Love hearing you talk about musicians and muscle memory! I feel like it's rarely talked about and it's honestly such a life saver when you need to whip out something quickly 😂
Jeff Goldblum really trying to get cast as Dave Brubeck with those glasses and the shape of his head and stuff.
yes I’m sure that’s exactly what Jeff was going for when he decided to have that head shape.

@@fluffshepnetwork7067 And a genuinely wonderful human being. His rapport with Stephen Colbert is a delight to watch.
@@fonkenful Agreed! He's so clearly, as you say, an amazing person with an incredible heart and mind!
Jeff's playing is relaxing and impressive.
I love the amount of space he leaves. He lets the phrases breathe and really listens.
It's the notes he *doesn't* play
Jeff is an absolute legend, that is all. Everything he touches, turns to golden perfection
YOU'RE HERE TOO?! are we the same person? You are in every comment section of every channel i watch.
Not complaining, just kinda surprised

Super hip playing! Killin piano. Great feel, deep swing, perfect accents and just casual as can be. Dude has got it. The melodies roll off his fingers loosely and very nicely.
Jeff Goldblum: *snaps fingers*

@@skylarsa 1. While he was explaining something at some point during the video, I had it in my head out of nowhere.

Jeff Goldblum is a gift to the world.
12:17 - Do it purely out of passion without the concern of becoming the best at it. I needed to hear this. Thank you.
Anyone can learn patterns given enough training
I’m really interested in how you’d react to Bill Bailey’s take on jazz piano. He convincingly demonstrates how you can essentially get away with “playing anything at all,” though I have a feeling he’s actually so skilled that he just _makes_ it look like he’s only playing “whatever.”
He’s having so much fun, making musical fun of others, and so UNDERSTATING his abilities
Thank you so much for demonstrating your frustration when improvising with "feel". I try to commit to genuine and challenging improv and get very impatient when I can't perform as flawlessly as stuff I've written or learned, so its nice to know that it doesn't make me terrible 😃😅
notable and realated, steve martin is an incredible banjo player.
Oh my word yes!!
Steve Martin is legit one of the top clawhammer-style banjo players around today.
Check out his Tiny Desk Concert if you haven't already!
Also: Jon Batiste had an amazing Tiny Desk Concert
Yeah he plays with Steep Canyon Rangers (a bluegrass turned folk band)
Apparently he became an actor to support a career in music (not the other way around). He said that in a live performance once.
The look on his face when he played😂
His playing is so saucy.
He adds to the band but by himself he wouldn’t be as good.
maybe in these particular examples that’s his goal because he’s a good pianist? no snark btw i just feel like a man with his years of experience probably knows the difference between comping and playing a solo piece
That's because comping is different with soloing. Without the band, yes the piano track alone wouldn't sound as good/complete. But again, comping is different with soloing, so if he were to solo the same tune, he wouldn't play it like that.
Not really true, because everyoens tastes are different. Like like one guy who cut off his ear could be seen as crazy but to himself hes very cool so like
steve martin is an amazing banjo player as well
This is how I feel when I see him do anything. How does he talk that way? How does he play jazz too? How is he so stylish? And aging so enthusiastically, and also seems like a self reflective and decent guy. Also the whole dinosaur thing. And snazzy AND jazzy.
I want a full analysis of Bill Clinton’s saxophone playing now hahaha

Me too! I’ve been listening to Hiromi this week
A TH-cam video of Hiromi playing live was the first jazz that really connected with me. Awesome.
We have to pick the right songs to show him though. Not The Tom & Jerry Show or any of her sonicbloom series.. I’d like for him to listen through her album with Edmar Castañeda. Either that or the trio project

Love it.
