- In this video I try to put together what is both the most complete and easiest guide for how you can ensure that you have success growing grass from seed every single time. While I give you a little homework to decide how you want to go about the various stages of this process, it really only comes down to nailing two things.
Get the seed bed loose and well prepared.
Keep the ground wet.

Love your minimalistic approach to lawn care. Too many people buy unnecessary soil amendments they see online and think are required for a great lawn.
Thank you.
"Only seed an area that is as big as what you can water without moving the sprinklers". Thank you for this powerful tip, I needed this!
It can be done to seed more. But, it is miserable and sets you up to fail.
Well explained, few and straightforward steps. Dude, btw, I saw a ghost crossing your lawn at your background 😄
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thank you.
Awesome video! Thanks.
Thanks.
Got them I just found my twin. I did the exact same thing. He even used the same manual rake.

Great content! If I may add…. If you’re someone like me with a high bird population in your area, I’d highly recommend a straw cover for the seed. Look for something that indicates 0 weed straw.
There are 20 robins foraging in my yard at all times. Various finch and sparrow. You're planting literal millions of seeds per 1000 square feet. It'll be OK if they snack on a few.
Birds are everywhere.
we tried straw and got a LOT of weeds.
I have followed your guidance and now have a germinating bent grass green. I’m 3ish weeks in and noticing a lot of weeds coming up, mainly crabgrass and purslane. What do you recommend for weed control on bent grass? From what I have found, most of the typical cool season lawn pre & post emergents also kill bent. Thanks for the great videos.
Spectracides weed killer for lawns with the yellow cap. You can also use quinclorac. Plus probably a few others but those two products have dealt with most of the weed issues I've had. Also it's a small space so just hand pulling is feasible as well. Wait until you've had a handful of mows before spraying.
I will try it out, Thank you Jason!!
I was planning to make a diy peat moss spreader, not anymore.😊
After raking seeds into soil, i used roller on the soil. I don't know if you ever tried roller.
Anyway great info as it simplfies the process. I am going to follow your guidance. Thanks.
Excellent. You can definitely roll. May even be recommended. I just don't. Watering the way you do for germination tends to settle the soil reasonable well.
@@JasonSeiberlich Thank you for the video, how do you keep birds from eating up the seeds?
There are literal millions of seeds on the ground per 1000 square feet. The birds can eat a few. It will be fine.
Any recommendations on how to be patient while the bent grass establishes itself? Hard to resist the urge to mow!
I failed that test this last time. Gotta repeat "it'll be worth it" to yourself repeatedly.
How's it going. Got a couple questions for ya. When using your rake, aren't you taking the risk or dragging a whole lot of seed away from a particular are? meaning your grass could to grow and you're like great!, but there's a huge barespot still because you dragged away from therre?.. ALso, I have a garden weasal now.. so can i just loosen up the soil, put down seed and than put a very thin layer of soil i have and then slightly pat it down? Thanks
To your first point, that's why I walk the rake around rather than standing in one spot and raking. No risk of pulling all of the seed out of an area that way. You can absolutely use the weasel and then put soil over the top as well.
Hi Jason, What does bentgrass look like at higher cut heights? I’ve heard it doesn’t look good over an inch. Can you explain why that is? Thanks
It looks awful. Gets whispy, super thick, and lays over on itself.
Where do I get that lawn enforcer shirt??
Lmao don't know. Was a gift.
If your entire lawn was bentgrass, would it make yard work very different for you?
Only in that I would be cutting shorter everywhere. Bent looks really bad over even just an inch tall.
What about temps?
Ideally warmer than 60 for highs and soil temps over 55.
I watered my bentgrass seed for 5 days and nothing happened. Then there was an overnight thunderstorm and it decided to show above the soil.
Bent will take upwards of 10 days to germinate depending on the conditions. Keep it wet for another week or so as the rest of the seed germinates.
@@JasonSeiberlich How fast does it spread laterally when it gets going?
@Boodieman72 not overly fast. It covers ground in a season, but not like feet by any means.
@@JasonSeiberlich Does using T-Nex speed that up or make any difference? I know it's supposed to slow vertical growth.
@Boodieman72 I don't believe significantly, but don't know that for sure
