I wanted to make my own rolls of turf for my garden so I did a test and grew various long trays of grass using the same seed on all, tray 1 compost, 2nd tray soil taken from the garden and tray 3 topsoil with a sand blend, i found growing seed in the compost was the best with in 1 week i went from seeds to 2 inchs of nice dark green grass i was amazed it grew so fast in the compost and the roots were very long i kept the trays in the conservatory all week and lightly watered them every day.

Well done. Thanks for the subtitles (Im USA and it's hard to understand your speech). Great comparisons! My problem is squirrels. They go wild digging up the bed. The lady next door planted a lot of trees (drawing squirrels). Don't know whether it's the ground tilling/soil loosening or what that draws them. Tarp works! Even once the seeds grow they continue to ransack the new bed.

Thank you! I have two weddings (my 2 eldest daughters) this summer and I need to do my lawns so badly! My issue is Japanese knotweed, moss, and ground squirrels! Also chickens but I’m going to try and contain them.
Have you ever made a large area where you made your own sod? Im debating that. Just marking off a flat area, laying down tarp, mixing bags of potting soil, mulch, sand and and perlite and then laying a thin layer over the tarp, laying bird netting over that and then another thin layer of the mixture- then sprinkling the grass seed on top and watering in. Then I debated putting a visqueen cover over that to further deter birds. After a good month cutting it into strips, preparing my area and then rolling it out to there 😂

Hey, "What about you?", (love that bit of you vids!) been watching loads of you recently. This one is great. My front lawn is in tatters but, due to expense, am not doing a start-from-scratch. Over the last few weeks have scarified weekly getting lots of moss out with a scarifying rake, spent a lot of time on my hands and knees picking out weeds, run over it with a manual aerator weekly (basically a roller with spikes), fed it twice with some standard feed and today have seeded it. I guess my question would be, I've got some top dressing coming tomorrow to cover that and will do a light reseed after; given the time of year would a make-shift scarecrow do as well as covering it for bird prevention? Again loving your vidoes at the moment and has inspired me to get my lawn sorted!

I just reseeded quite a bit of my lawn after a major renovation. Looks like I did pretty good according to this video. I didn't double seed like you did. I basically spreaded seed on, put a 1/4" or so of compost on top, then do a gentle rake and called it good. Interesting that I could have put more seed on top of that if I wanted to. I planted TTTF, and it's day 8 and I can already see some shoots in some areas. These areas happen to be the warmest areas. The north and east areas no shoots yet, but probably soon! Pretty cool results. Basically, covering with anything (within reason) is 100% better than not covering at all. Also, interesting that the fleece cover may get grass started faster, but within 30 days the un-fleeced will catch up just the same. To note: I used compost because I had quite a bit left, and I had already leveled my lawn so compost for me was the right thing to use vs spreading more topsoil on. In otherwords, in my case I wanted the material to break down. One thing I am doing in addition to what you did, is put starter fertilizer down probably at around the 14 day mark when I start seeing enough shoots.

I just started working on my small side yard, right next to forest land, and it probably hasn't been touched except with a mower since the beginning of time. It's a savage patch of clover, moss, broad leaf grass, ruts, holes, pieces of rocks and glass that washed down the hill behind my house. Apparently there was a homestead up there in the early 20th century and they just threw their garbage into a ravine which flows down into my yard when it rains hard.
I've started out by mowing, using a blower and carefully hand-picking any debris out of my yard. That said, I'll never get it all. I've started out by taking a garden weasel to my bare spots and then covering those with a nice seed product that has fertilizer and mulch powder in it that expands quite a bit when watered. I didn't have any problem with seeds being washed away, eaten by birds or germinating. I'm doing a few bare spots at a time and learning from how it goes.
The next step I'm taking is to use an herbicide to kill off the clover and broad leaf grasses. I'm doing it in patches instead of bombarding my whole yard at one time. After the weeds are killed and the herbicide has had 14 days to leech out I'll hit those spots with the garden weasel and seed mix like I did the bare spots. After I have the main section I'm working on all seeded and the grass is growing, then I'll start top dressing.
Since I'm on a hillside there is a slope to my yard. I'm going to make this section I'm working on very flat and with little slope so that'll take a bit of soil. I'll be using a mix with soil and sand that's rated well for top dressing. After I have the turf flat, weed free and looking pretty good I'll finish it with a top dressing of fine sand to just make the ground softer and to help grind up any mulch going forward. All this will also serve to permanently bury the little pieces of glass, etc.

Would it have grown faster if done in the late springtime?
I'm in West Yorkshire, 1200 feet up in the pennines & the weather is typical spring weather here. Mild with sunshine & showers.
Firstly, I killed off all the moss on my lawn, hand scarified & then 4 days ago seeded (fescue & ryegrass) & top soiled it mostly where it was bare. I'm now waiting on seeing some new growth. I'm encouraged by what's left of the older/original grass vigorously (but not too quickly) growing & thickening up. However, I can't see any new growth where the new seed has been sown. How long should it take at this time of year to see new growth through the top soil? Great content by the way.

another cracking video Robbie. really interesting experiment, I would always have said compost but as you said topsoil won't compact the same way. thanks for taking the time to answer a lot of questions.
when I patch fix my lawn (dog urine) I always wondered whether I should cover the patches with clear plastic or something to speed up germination before the birds get to it.
    anyway thanks again

Howsaboutye! Hope I’ve pronounced that right. Thank for recommending the scarified, worked a treat!
I’ve a terrible problem with moss in the on the North face lawn. I’ve taken it down with the scarified so the soil is fully exposed. It’s generally a clay soil but I’m thinking of incorporating sand or something to break the soil to breathe and make it less compacted and more fertile. Only, where the lawn meets the hedge I have the opposite where it dries out so no grass or moss would grow. If it’s not too much to ask ‘your good self’ would you suggest builders sand, sharp sand building or what sand, bearing in mind some building sand have deadly elements that kill everything.
Many thanks in anticipation of Irish sage!
    Peter

did a reno with compost in September , looking decent now, but think will overseed and add some 70:30 in the spring as the lawn was pretty awful before and I scarified it to death! Have the motivation and equipment to keep verticutting and scarifying in the future, You and Daniel have been the big inspirations.

Do you recommend always putting seed again after you already had put it on and dressed it? So you got seed in there under the dressing and on top of it. I'm guessing you improve chances of getting more coverage but it may also invite birds.

Another great video. I watched another guy on TH-cam pre germinate his grass in a net in a bucket of water for 24hrs then every 12hrs until germination started and it seemed to work well. When the grass started rooting he spread it around his lawn. I was thinking of trying this but also using your compost roller method and the pre germinated seed. Have you ever tried pre germinating?
