Hey Adam, great review of the device I've been using every day for the last year! As probably many here will point out, the thing's a bit expensive, but if you're a pro that works a lot, it will really make things so much more ergonomic. So it's absolutely worth getting since there's no alternative to it that would be this ergonomic, or having scrolling controls at all.
I've recently been looking for a replacement for my Cintiq remote (as it broke) and up until this video I've only seen the Razer Tartarus v2 as a possible replacement. Do you have any experience using that compared to the Tourbox?
I just noticed your reply! I totally agree, there are so many “gimmicks” out there that you never end up using. But this one - it really just works. I’m not surprised that you’ve made it a daily tool.
As a left handed artist, I find it hard to use the keyboard shortcuts with my right hand. I've been looking for a good artist review of this product because it interested me. And you delivered beyond my expectations Adam, as always !
Oh of course! My son is left-handed as well and I can completely empathize with you. I’m actually thinking that it might be BETTER for a leftie - because the shoulder button would line up with your thumb instead of your pinkie, I would have loved that!
+1! I bought this with your promo code before even finishing this video! My left CMD-key-thumb is RSI'ed to hell and it was random chance you were reviewing this right when I needed a change up. This is the first ever direct "influencer-influenced-promo-purchase" I've made and I couldn't be happier with the hardware and the console (driver)! Like any new tool, I imagine it will take a few projects to have muscle-memory up to the same speed as on keyboard, but I can already say your review is spot on and I'm super stoked to have this beauty. Thanks Adam! Great recommendation.
Hey adam! (It's your old STUDENT Marie-Eve, Congrats on the channel by the way !) Interesting video! Did you know you can also use a JoyCon do to this ? (The controllers from the Nintendo Switch) If you are ever curious :)
@@ZeBirdBrain Definitely interested in seeing this! I've seen japanese artists use an old wii remote and something that resembles a joycon. Learning how to use a JoyCon for this would be great :D
I would pay so much money for this if it worked on the iPad with my painting and sculpting programs. My back loves sitting on the couch and sculpting there, but it slows me down so much not having hotkeys to jump brushes with
Best thing I've personally ever used is the CSP Tabmate. VERY comfortable in the hand, no need to sit it on anything it because of how it's shaped, no confusion with the buttons either because the tactile feedback is enough not to get confused. You can use it with other programs too I think if you use auto hotkeys.
I use the Razer Tartarus, as I also don't find space with the big cintiq for a keyboard. I like it a lot, but it is a little different from a normal keyboard, as they are mor arranged in rows and columns, instead ofr being offset from one another like the normal keyboard. What I like very much is the modifier key, so Allt he keys have alternatives, where I can put commonly used combinations, such as cntrl+u for hue etc. But one downside is the Driver, as Razer thinks anyone with one of their products need to update it with each cycle, as its one driver for all products, which is super frustrating. Do you know the Azeron Cyborg? It would be great if you could do a reviewon that device, too as it comes with even more buttons. What I feel is lacking on the tourbox is a cusion for your ankle. I like that a lot at the tartarus, and it has has been my biggest issue with normal keyboards. edit: I say that you talked about the wacom remote, too. I have used it and It was alright for me, had no problems finding the buttons without looking. But the clickwheel was terrible, always turned it off. The Issue I had more with the remote was, that sometimes it just didn't connect, or the input was with a certain delay.
Are there different sizes and models? Any "smaller" version? Here's an example. When PS2/PS3 control was replaced for that big PS4 control, my playing experience was less enjoyable. I have small hands and these big devices are always uncomfortable for them. Seems it fits your hands well, though.
I use the clip studio tabmate whenever I do illustrations and 2d animation on CSP. Unfortunately it's only works with CSP, but I heard that with a software you can make it work with any other art software out there
I'm a Kickstarter backer of the TourBox and I really love it. It is a simple tool that is very basic in design as it's basically a microcontroller using a serial port to USB bridge. This why the driver won't effup your system. But this simplicity is also why you won't see it working on an iPad as it would require an additional bridge with MFi certification and it would require each apps to include support for the TourBox because AFAIK, there's no system wide accessory support in iOS.
I've been looking for something to replace my Wacom Express! I've had it for years, but the sleep mode is annoying and since you can't turn it off, it turns off every 10mins. I'm also a left-handed artist so it's been a hassle finding something for me that I can translate the shortcuts. Only thing about the Tourbox is, a lot of the buttons look like it's orientated for right-handed users. But hell, probably better then the Wacom Express and it's sold on Amazon too. I might give it a try!
got one of these for Zbrush, and my oh my. This little tool is a beast, if anyone is a art student or a profession I would strongly recommend this. I can't wait to use this for photoshop, since i personally draw mainly on procreate.
Looks good, personally like using the Clip Studio Tabmate as I don't have to have my arm on the desk all the time, but might consider this for something like Blender or other programs.
I use a older Gaming Speedpad for my shortcuts in Drawing Program , my lefthand lays comfrtbale on it and my thumb knows what to do by feeling it. As cool this thing looks the price is fully overpriced some little bit of plastic. I would agree on buying this for a Price around 100-120 but not almost 180 $
Great video Adam!, I would have never learned of all the cool technology out there without your video's, I remember watching your Pureref vid and it changed the way I drew forever
Nice review. Always looking for something to make shortcuts a bit more tactile. Side note, the music in the video is a bit loud in comparison to the voice on my system.
@10:50 I wonder if you couldnt get a thin magnet to attach to it. It would stick to that Cintiq even better. I know they have some expensive elite version that is Bluetooth. Anyway, great review man. I might get one, I wish they had an LED version and they said they are working on an IOS app. Its expensive but at least I can review it on my own struggling channel. Thanks brother. -John
Thank you for the amazing review for the Tourbox device. I like how unbiased your opinions and reviews are, no sugarcoating anything and you mention the flaws and how is should be improved, I'm convinced to invest on one after seeing your review. A question if I may, Have you reviewed/tried the (Clip Studio Tabmate) device? What are your thoughts on it? Again, thank you for everything you share with the community, wish you all the best and happiness
Might be silly to suggest this but to me this device's irregular or abstract and asymmetrical approach to button layout is why the GameCube controller is so wonderful.
That's amazing. I've been using a Razer Tartarus v2 and a Razer Naga set (I dunno why but I never took to Pen & Tablet, I've always been a mouse user... call me a casual) I might finally have an answer to the Tartarus v2
I'd say that is indeed kind of expensive D: but i see the use of some of the elements added (the wheel does look like a really interesting feature. Some months ago i bough a 50$ gaming half-keyboard and it worked like a charm. No more pain on the wrist, and plenty space on my desk. All the keys allowed macros so i could fully customize everything :D
Huh. What a coincidence. I was looking for a new programmable keypad for artists. I have an XP-Pen pad from Amazon, and it’s cheap but a button broke and it’s not the most responsive. This looks perfect, but unfortunately the price may be a little too heavy for me right now. Though if anyone has their own suggestions, I’d love to hear! I’m at least looking for a keypad that I can plug into my PC rather than Bluetooth and battery.
Great vid as always Adam, but imo: just get a Razer Tartarus! less than half the price, a lot more settable buttons, and it's actually ergonomic... OH AND IT GOT DEM RAZER PRETTY LIGHTS ! it really made my PS workflow smoother
They reached out to me to review the Tourbox but it has 2 downfalls for me: 1. it does not have iOS support so you cannot use it for an iPad/Procreate. 2. the design is simply not there yet; pretty unaesthetic at the moment.
Completely unrelated but perceptually I thought your desk was further away then what it was and when you reached your hand out and touched it from where you were sitting my brain got so messed up.
I like to use a similar peripheral along side the keyboard. I like to have access to scroll wheels for zoom in/out, rotate and brush size. I really like how this one is setup because it has three different wheels instead of pushing a button to cycle through. Would sit really well next to a keyboard.
The Tartarus is still probably better but this one looks interesting, imo it needs more keys, i have a ton of things bound to my keys that I always use, things like hue and saturation, invert selection, liquify, flip canvas, a couple of brushes,. This doesn’t look like it can have so many shortcuts, and changing profiles is annoying.
I bought a programmable mouse a few years ago for a similar reason. Still use the keyboard for some stuff because there's not enough keys and my pc sometimes has a problem with double wielding (i.e. pen in the left hand, mouse in the right hand). This would probably work great with my laptop too, because when I am painting on the screen the keyboard is unaccessible. If it works for left-handed people and the price was okay, I'd consider it.
I just started getting carpal tunnel symptoms in my non-dominant hand so this is probably the sign that I should stop using a regular keyboard for shortcuts 😶 I feel like it could use a wrist rest though, but that's and easy addition to get separately.
I don't think that I need a Tourbox. My dinosaur version of Photoshop (PSE8) still has its grabby hand and Navigator options so that I can move onto different directions of my image on my Canvas. Different strokes for different folks. Otherwise, most of your videos are a delight to listen to.
Awesome video Adam! I recently got the tourbox myself and I understand what people are saying with the price, but I agree exactly with what you said: there's currently no similar alternative, and I've tried the tablet shortcut buttons, cintiq remote, and razer tartarus. The genius of the design is definitely all the buttons feeling different, and the multiple scrollwheels (makes such a difference). I still catch myself jumping to the keyboard out of repetition, but I'm definitely going to be making this my main tool.
It is completely true that it is incredibly intuitive. It took me just a few minutes to set up the shortcuts, and then it was like I had been using it for months. This product is phenomenal. Well worth the buy.
@@iMoOnshine A similar expensive product doesn't justify another expensive one. It can make sense from the company point of view i.e. "this is what the market offers and we're gonna follow that line". But if it's expensive for the public people are not gonna buy the one or the other. I consider myself a geek and have no problem spending money on tech, if I find it worthy, tbh I can't see this value to spend almost 200$ for something I can keep doing with my keyboard or an optimized hotkeys setup on my tablet.
This thing sounds amazing, and would resolve all my issues with the one bad sticking button on my tablet, but oof 170 dollars is pretty steep, especially for some one who is not quite at the professional workflow level.
1:03 Oh I bet you like playing with adults. If only I could play with you... oh well, no point in getting weird, I just wanted to point out how funny it sounded when you mentioned playing a tactile game with adults. Yes, feel free to call me childish or immature.
Seems very usefull and looks like it's really well done and with good drivers which is sadly weird to see, but I still preffer my Razer Tartarus v2, which I got for a third of what the Tourbox costs, and I feel like it's waay more ergonomic, with more buttons, and also with good solid software (at least in my experience I never had any problem with Synapse in 3 years that I've been using this thing, + it shares program with my mouse so I didn't need any extra software in my case) But as always, very nicely done video
