  • Download Free SketchUp Model: craftedworkshop.com/store/art... In this video, I'll show you how to build a Mission or Art and Crafts style dining chair using solid Quartersawn White Oak. In Part 1, we'll go over the chair design, breaking down and milling rough lumber, creating the chair legs, and creating the joinery for the chair base.
    Part 2 covers creating the back rests, back splat styles, and finishing. Watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JI8Ir...

    Really nicely done and this is where the Domino shine but still difficult especially using them at an angle, you make it look easier than it is. Super job Johnny!!!

      +Thom spillane thanks Thom! Took a lot of thought to wrap my head around using the Domino on the compound miter but finally figured it out.

    I KNEW IT! There have been so many times I've watched a Crafted video and seen something in Johnny's shop that I wanted. I had a feeling it was going to happen again today. I'd love to get one of the Powermatic jointers. I've used a friends and it's amazing. Johnny has all the good tools!
    Anyway, great video, can't wait to see the second part. Chairs (like these) are not easy to replicate and so far it looks awesome.

    Did you ever watch that Parks and Rec episode where Ron Swanson is making chairs for Tom's new restaurant? Ron smashes up the first one he builds because he says he made it so perfect that it looks machine-made. This video reminds me of that. Great work.

      +Brandon's Bees hah, Ron is my spirit animal. Classic episode. I also enjoy the one where he's freaking out meeting the chair maker (Christian Becksvoort) at the local woodworking show.

    I have to say I am very impressed by your woodworking. I have been a carpenter for 20+ yrs and I am working on getting into wood working and cabinet making. I have found a big success in the head boards I have been making, Thank you for all the great videos and detail along with templates, this is great. I am looking forward to videos coming in weekly.. Cheers from Wisconsin

      I too have done many full bed designs out of log beds for customers among other builds, I will show you some of the work I have done in the near future. The head boards I am doing at the moment are flat ones that sit flush on the wall, but it depends what the customer orders, it how they are built, They are a hot seller to be honest, I did not think they would sell but I cannot keep them in the shop!! :)

    Excellent Video thanks. I've just started making the Arts & Crafts Stickley table to match, & the chairs will be next. So watching both of your video's was a great help. One thing, you mentioned Woodpecker Tools. Yes they are good, if you can afford them. I was going to buy their Mechanical Pencil. I live in Thailand & they wanted to charge me 50 USD for delivery. That is way, way over the top. Thanks again for the video

  • @meanders9221

    Nice job, Domino technique especially. White oak is such a great wood to work with, but the chairs are heavy aren't they! This chair looks similar to a Gustav Stickley No. 378 "occasional or desk chair" though I don't think I've ever seen a Stickley by any of the brothers with tapered and splayed back legs, so your friends' chairs are probably modern interpretations. I've made a few Stickley repros (rockers, side tables, recently a set of six No. 353 dining chairs) but never had to deal with compound angles, just angled mortises (or tenons) to attach the side rails and stretchers to the legs. Loose tenons sure make that easier, and I can see where a Domino machine would be a big help. But dowels and pocket holes aren't allowed :-) (Note: if you make the back legs out of 8/4 flatsawn stock the ray flake will be on the fronts of the legs where you want it.)

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Anderson thanks a lot! Definitely some heavy chairs! Yea this wasn't an original Stickley piece as far as I can tell. Definitely a more modern interpretation. And thanks for the tip, should have thought of that before buying 8/4 QSWO.

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Graham Jarman yea I neglected to say what size! For the stretchers I'm using 10x80 I believe. The pieces are 1" thick so the 10mm Dominos are perfect.

    • @craftedworkshop

      I'd say they're slightly better since they are typically larger and have more glue surface. They are definitely similar though, and you could use dowels and be fine.
