I watched this when it first aired and I was 13 years old. Davros was absolutely terrifying. Brilliant story and acting. Still holds up 47 years later. And I met Tom a year later and got his autograph which I still have.

Michael Wisher played Davros this first time he appeared in Doctor Who. Terry Malloy played Davros in Resurrection Of the Daleks in season 21 to 25. David Gooderson played Davros only in Destiny of the Daleks, but I never saw David's role. Both Wisher and Malloy played Davros really well.

@@DrWhoFanJ This is a bit of a nitpick but I keep seeing you do this. I'm sure you mean well by correcting people's use of words like episode and season but you often say it in a way that doesn't make it immediately clear what the problem is. Think about it from the perspective of someone that you're correcting who made the mistake because they don't know the difference between episode and serial (or season and series), often your replies would make it more confusing.

    • @Alondro77

But the answer is also in this episode. The Doctor gives Davros the chance to become good, Davros utterly rejects it. At that point of the rejection of goodness and embracing the utter knowledge of cruelty and destruction, Davros is no longer redeemable.
Therefore, the answer to 'should you kill baby Hitler' is obvious to those with a slightly higher IQ than normal: if one has the power of time travel, you can simply pay for Adolf to remain in art school, or steer him into architectural design, which is what he was most interested in and most skilled at. Then the Nazis do not happen and Hitler dies of Parkinsons likely by his early 60s. But, the Soviets still exist. Stalin still takes power in the 1930s and murders millions of his own people. Perhaps a world war still takes place. He too must be stopped.
Once you begin meddling in time, you quickly find you can never stop. The ripples of causality touch all things.

"I could do it." I wonder if Davros really could have done it. My first thought is that he couldn't have, even if he himself actually believed it. I don't think he actually understood compassion and benevolence, except as an intellectual exercise - it was just his arrogance making that claim. Crippled and being propped up every second by life support, Davros' fear of death was as much a motivator as anything. I would say that it was ironic that humanity would share a similar fate to that of the Daleks, becoming the Toclafane.

And I had seen Star Wars 4. And it got me thinking. During the war between the Thals and the Kaleds. That Count Dooku gave Davros the technology to build the Dalek guns. And showed him the of space and time travel too. When Dooku landed in Khaled held lines. And was captured and taken to Davros. And Davros questions him about his knowledge of his galaxy. I recall watching Genesis Of The Daleks, when it was first broadcast way back in 1975. And as I was only rather young at the time, when I first saw Davros, he absolutely terrified me! At first, given his appearance etc., I thought he was a puppet, worked by some clever mechanical means, and it was only later that I learned that he was actually portrayed by an actor, the actor in question of course being Michael Wisher. And with all due respect to the other actors who've played the character, and who gave rather convincing portrayals, for me, Michael Wisher was THE Davros, for his own portrayal of the character was simply awesome. Apparently, while rehearsing, he used to wear a paper bag over his head, with two slits for eyes, in order to get used to being semi-blind, when he wore the actual Davros mask. Guess it must have been a bit uncomfortable (the mask that is), which surely makes his performance all the more commendable. RIP MW ...

Americans did get a fair amount of exposure to Dr Who prior to Eccleston. In the early 1970s, their 1st taste of the programme being the Jon Pertwee episodes, but I don’t know how widespread it was networked. Tom Baker’s stories were promoted stateside in the late 1970s with more success. The 1960s theatrically released films (Dr Who & The Daleks / Dalek Invasion of Earth) probably didn’t attract much interest in the USA as, not having had the TV series shown over there at that time, no fan base had been built up. In the 1990s, ‘Dr Who the Movie’, a made-for-TV movie was shown in the UK, USA, etc.

Tom Baker was my first and remains my favourite Doctor. He could switch from serious acting to a comedic style effortlessly, with such charisma. Gave the Doctor true complexity in the characterisation.

The quirkiness of Tom Baker and the quirkiness of the set design f.e. "Ark in Space" or the episode with the alien giant killer plant and the bubbling bucket of acid.
I love the Tom Baker era.

Michael Wisher's portrayal of Davros here was simply awesome. David Gooderson, Terry Malloy and one or other actors gave a very convincing portrayal of the character, but for me at least, Michael Wisher was THE Davros.

I love that little confrontation between Davros and The Doctor.
"What mistakes do they make? You will tell me."
    "No."
    "YOU WILL TELL ME!!!!"
    "NO, I WILL NOT!!!!"
I think Davros must be one of the most short-tempered men in the entire universe. Maybe The Doctor should have given him a jelly baby or two, to have helped calm him down.

The Doctor could have said to Davros “The reason the Daleks fail is that they don’t have a conscience. This causes them to be blind to opportunities.” Saying this at this moment would have made the Dalek’s less aggressive. As was his mission.

so davros is supposed to be hitler in a mask, he does seem to do the task a bit too well, and it might be good to find out exactly what happened to him and how he ended up in the chair in the first place, and although i never saw this amazing story when it was first on television, i at least caught up with it on video, in the 90`s and i wouldn`t be surprised if this was probably with planet of the spiders one of the first doctor who videos that i ever bought, and remind me to have a chat with someone who did watch this when it was first on, and find out what they thought about this serial, let alone this episode.

I think a lot of later Davros performances end up off the mark in two main ways.
Some simply ascend to shouting too often and quickly. Yes, it’s his trait, but it still needs to land. He doesn’t need to do that every time he speaks. Wisher is very measured in when he starts to raise his voice, and smartly leaves room to go higher when he has to yell a longer piece of dialogue. Some later performances just miss this mark.
But two, Wisher is also doing phenomenal work in lower, even whisper registers. The general dynamics of his voice are extreme, employed in an inorganic way. Many later performances really struggle here, making Davros sound too close to ordinary conversational tone, not enough jumps in dynamics, or random emphasis of words, or rolls back before going a little louder. Wisher is much more musical.
But Wisher really is an amazing actor. I wouldn’t expect many to match him. A couple other Davroses were pretty decently close though.

Superb. I'm in my fifties, yet I can still watch this "kid's story" and feel genuine fear when I watch this scene. It's just so well written and acted. Compare it with what passes for adult drama these days, where you'd have a smirking hero trading quips with some cartoonish villain and a complete absence of any actual emotion. How far we've fallen.

I wonder how Genesis of the Daleks would have worked, if Jon Pertwee was still the Dr at the time and how well he would have interacted with Davros the man who created the Daleks . I must say I always preferred the Dalek stories when they were lead by either Emperor Daleks and or Supreme Daleks as Who villains go Davros IMO screwed up the concept of the Daleks and after Death to the Daleks no Dalek story was ever a non Davros story.
