Huge fan of The Road Warrior - btw you mentioned the dubbing in Mad Max - yes for years it was pretty silly but I think newer releases have restored Mel’s original voice.

Your analysis is spot on. You echo my precise feelings. The silent movie portion offering is a cinematic masterpiece. A coming of age for Mel Gibson. Thank you

I remember watching this movie when they show movies on the 3 big networks on Sunday night. I remember the next day, the boys talking about it during lunch or home class. Love this movie. My favorite character was the Gyro Captain.

Obviously here in Australia, the original Mad Max wasn't dubbed 😊. Road Warrior is a far more accomplished film and holds up way better than the first film, but Mad Max became a cultural milestone in Aust. We had a huge car culture at that time, with big muscle cars being raced (illegally) all over the country, and Mad Max touched a nerve there. It was also one of the most successful of the Ozploitaion films of the 70s and early 80s. BTW composer Brian May was well know here as the conductor of the ABC (Aust version of the BBC) orchestra, and composed many TV themes.

My favorite thing about this movie is the ending. “ And the Road Warrior? That was the last we ever saw of him. He lives now only in my memories.”

Some trivia - One of the shots you show is Max opening a can of "Dinki-Di dog food". Dinki-di is Aust slang for authentic.

I find it a little odd that you are being critical of Mel Gibson's performance in the first movie based on the American dubbed version. The original Australian version is easily obtainable and is the only version that should be watched. Mel is great in it and it blends perfectly with the second film

I had never made the Star Wars connection to the shot choices and plot. Always look forward to your analysis and perspective on cinema. 👌

One thing I’ll add: Miller was influenced by Akira Kurosawa than George Lucas. The screen wipes Lucas got from Kurosawa. The entire story of part 2 is practically identical to seven samurai. “Fistful of dollars” is another film that rips off 7 samurai as well. All three movies have the same basic story. Gang terrorizes town, outsider comes to town and becomes savior (for a price), outsider saves town then goes back to being outsider. I can’t tell if miller is ripping off Lucas or Leone. Either way, the creativity level of Millers design I find to be much more clever than aforementioned films.

I also had not made the Star Wars connection. My first thought of the chase scene was that of the one in "The French Connection." Two very different storylines, but if one forgets that both scenes are parts of films, one feels all of the nausea, chest tightness, gritting of teeth and euphoric fear that one might feel in an actual chase.
This film was my introduction to Me Gibson. My second introduction to him was in "Gallipoli." I saw both films first in the early 1980s. My how time flies!
Shout out to recently deceased Tina Turner of "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" fame (among other things). Didn't she say: "We don't need another hero; We don't need to know the way home; All we want is life beyond Thunderdome?"

Never considered the influence of Star Wars on this film, but I'm surprised you didn't mention the obvious influence of Raiders of the Lost Ark, the big blockbuster from the prior year with its own spectacular and climatic chase sequence. Love both films btw...

Love your reviews and analyses -- keep it up!!
I've always loved Road Warrior because it doesn't waste any time. Any movie that can just throw you in and intrigue you from the opening sequence, and then never let up, is a good movie. A good movie should show -- not tell, and this movie does it (as you more eloquently described).
In the vein of movies like Road Warrior that just grab the viewer by the neck and bring along for a journey (again: show, not tell): check out Blue Ruin. I'd love to hear your take on that one.

It is one of my favorite movies of all time. But I really don't understand why this movie has an extra "american" dubbing. I think the Australian original isn't that much different.

Always liked the movie and enjoy your commentary. Particularly liked the scene of Max and Humungus colliding head on with Humungus getting completely obliterated. Not unlike the destruction of the Death Star?

6:51 This interpretation of "anarchy" looks more like some ye olde version of "fascism." Or maybe feudalism.
7:24 The Gyro Captain (played by Bruce Spence)

The original Mad Max is criminally underrated, Toe Cutter is a much more interesting Villain than Humungous and I guess I prefer the Tragic Thriller over the Bombastic Chase Film. The climax of Mad Max is much better too, just a perfect little film.
It's a great series but I have a soft spot for the original and I would say even Thunderdome is on par with Road Warrior. I have never understood why Road Warrior was considered so much better.
Also, on a side note, Fury Road is fine, but without Mel it ain't Mad Max.

I'm in the minority, but I like Mad Max (1979) more than that Mad Max 2. It is underrated.
