Thunderbird is a cool character lore wise. Aside from Melusi, the last actually realistic story we got for an operator was Goyo (dad and sister killed in a bombing, mom encouraged him to join military school and he worked on anti-smuggling operations), Everything else is super cheesy and unrealistic, so it's cool to see a new character that earned their spot with their own ambition and skill

Agreed but I think siege is just... Not good in that department.
For one the writing of character themselves has been pretty inconsistent, but most importantly is that said writing isn't front and center, and my best way to put it in relation to another online game: "it isn't Apex Legends".
What do I mean ? Well Apex's characters are *very* front and center. They are a core part of the game's identity, even if they don't tie up with their gameplay. In Siege, outside of THunt there's really no characters.. they would be blank states and nothing would much change. They don't interact with one another, they don't have voicelines outside of "deployed X or Y", "spotted enemy at Z", and the obvious "RELOADIIIIINNNNG"
Which is a shame really. Siege in lore has a pretty good cast of characters, and is probably the first multiplayer game I know where character have a "calm" and "in combat" variant of their voicelines.

So cool how the ace in the hole to keep comms secure was to use a language that was ostensibly dead. Thank you Gregor for having some class when talking about this subject. As someone whose family is native to America, it does feel kind of crappy when people constantly try to make jokes about your culture without understanding it at all. The number of times I have had to stop myself from rolling my eyes at the same unfunny, ignorant "joke" lest I look like a killjoy SJW with no sense of humour. Heaven forbid though if you make the same style of joke towards them because then they immediately realize how unfunny that style of joke actually is.
It really comes down to this.
When you make a joke that is culturally insensitive but you didn't know any better: It doesn't make it Ok but we can have a teaching moment if you are receptive to hearing it out.
When you make a joke that is culturally insensitive but others have tried to explain why it legitimately isn't funny: Not ok, you're just being an asshole. Stop being an asshole.
We all have said/did some dumb things that we can all learn from, it just requires you to be willing to accept that you may not know enough about something or you might know the wrong things. It's ok to be wrong, we can all do better.

I’ve been playing this game for like a month as a way to just play something I won’t take seriously/get competitive with cuz I suck at FPSs (I think I’m failing tbh) and only found you after looking up “wtf does Nomad do?” This video came up as a recommendation and as of 3am EST, fuck all 288 dislikes on this video. This is dope content. I am Navajo American. The Thunderbird is very important to me in the Navajo mythos.
The Thunderbird was once a large imposing creature from the realm of chaos. It was massive, when it would soar across the sky, every flap of its wings would cause thunder to crack and storms followed behind the Thunderbird whereever it traversed. The creature soared through the Navajo lands as it harassed and picked off people. That was until, a duo of characters referred to as the Sun Twins were awarded special tools and weapons from Spider Woman. (She was a woman that taught the Navajo how to weave and to never do so out of selfish desire for notoriety). Spider woman assisted the twins.
The Monster Slayer and Born from Water (the general titles assigned to the duo). Took it upon themselves to fight the imposing bird of nature. The battle was one of clever technique and some luck. The twins were able to defeat the Thunderbird and when it died. It crashed down on the desert and left a massive hole. To which time has covered the body.
According to my Grandmother, Grand Uncle, and Medicine Men I talked to growing up. When the Thunderbird died, it's body turned to stone. We see the corpse of the bird every day. It is based on a volcanic neck, called Shiprock Peak. The Peak was referred to as the tail feathers of the Thunderbird. Which is a protected and honored landmark of the Navajo people. It was a triumph of the Sun Twins. (If you look at Shiprock Peak from space, it would appear that the peak has two massive sprouting wings. To which amazed my geography professor when I informed him of the legend).
The Navajo, or the Dine as we call ourselves believe in Order and Chaos. To me, the character Thunderbird is embracing the mythical creature as a chaotic bringer of order. Someone who soars with eagles and is there to help defend everyday people. The Thunderbird is remembered as something different to other tribes. I felt like I should explained the Navajo version I grew up with.
Also, I LOVE TB's design. She is rugged and eminates the embodiment of a modern American Indian person. (I don't like to use the term 'Native American'). She is not whimsical or appears like a tribal warrior stereotype.
I have not seen a character with so much self respect since Thunder from Killer Instinct 2013. I love Thunderbird and what the character may come to mean to me for the future. I miss my relatives and the stories they told me growing up, but now I attempt to at least inform my family's newest generations of the heritage they possess. I live in a place near a town called Shiprock, and nearly every day I go anywhere. I see Shiprock Peak and I feel comforted in the deepest parts of my soul that such a landmark could mean so much to me.
Thank you for enduring my steam of consciousness.

I like it when games like R6 add characters of different backgrounds and depictions. Not to mark off a checklist of "diversity", but rather to create a diverse group of characters with interesting stories. I don't care if Ubisoft makes a checklist to add a gay person, a disabled person, or people of strange ethnicities, I care if their stories are intertwined with these details to make them compelling characters to play and learn.

Assuming the number of people who will be upset or be insensitive will be small why frames that as the reason to talk about Ubi adding a Nakoda Op? It seems that rather than talking about how cool or interesting it is for Ubi to add a new op alone it gets framed as people have been hating on the new op for "X" reason. We saw this is Flores, where he was the first gay character to be added(I am not 100% on this statement) and rather than talking about how adding the Bomb-Ba to the game would change things it was people defending Flores being gay which has zero impact on the gameplay. Perhaps this is just me but I tend to apply a Stoic mentality to these sorts of things by asking the following. What do I have control over? My opinion on the new op and everything surrounding them. South Park is a great example you used and I'm glad you did. One thing that I think is striking about South Park is that they literally make fun of everyone, and they aren't afraid to go far with it. They roast and take digs at pretty much every group imaginable. And that's why I feel confident that racism, sexism, other-isms, is not their intent. And while intent is not everything, there is a lot of importance that can be found in both habit and intent.
Personal example: A friend of a friend used to hang out with a shared group of friends we had a few years back. We could hang out, get food, all that normal stuff. Over time I started noticing that he would make racial jokes. Those jokes, while I didn't think them funny, first seemed harmless to me. They always came across specifically as attempts at jokes, and that was it. However, I noticed over time as I got to know him a bit more, that his jokes were very one-note. He made a lot of jokes specifically about minorities and a LOT of jokes specifically about minorities working low wage jobs. To the point that I started realizing that he didn't make many jokes outside of this, especially when we were in a resturant. He really enjoyed making comments about a waitress right after she walked away. Some people at the table would laugh, others like me just ignored it.
One day I decided to mention this to the shared friend who pretty much always burst out laughing at these jokes. I said "You ever notice how *friend* seems to always make jokes about minorities and not only doesn't make jokes about white people but won't laugh or respond when people make them." At the time my friend who came from a conservatives household but saw himself as apolitical, got very defensive and pretty much just said that I'm reading too much into it. But over time I noticed that he stopped laughing at the jokes as much, until he was nearly as silent as me.
Then one day it happened. My friend confronted his friend about the jokes while we were at a resturant, right after the guy made a joke. He did it in pretty much the same way I brought it up. We then saw the joke telling guy turn as though a switch went off in his head. He got serious and angry. He then proceeded to go on a quiet tirade against minorities. He insisted that people of color make bad waitresses and servers because they don't care about doing a good job, and that they are basically lazy, selfish, and after a quick buck. He said something alone the lines of "I'm sure there's a job that those people can be good at but I don't know what it is." He even mentioned that he is oppressed and unable to share these views which he knows are right. The group was largely white and conservative leaning unlike myself, but at that moment it clicked in everyone's minds. *Oh shit this guys like a legit racist, he's been telling these jokes because he saw it as a socially appropriate way to express his problematic views.*
After that, the guy who used to organize those occasional dinners, invited people without inviting that guy. This despite the fact that they had been very close friends for years. Even he felt really uncomfortable with what happened, and the people who laughed all the time admitted that they felt a bit guilty for encouraging the behavior. We even later found out that a young waitress who was working her way through school at a diner, heard some of the shit that he used to say, and literally went into the back to cry once.
I know this story goes a little off topic, but I think it's legit important to remember that racism, sexism, and things along those lines, they are real, they do exist. A joke or comment doesn't necessarily mean anything in relation to racism, but we should be wary and keep an eye out for the real deal. Because there tends to be signs over time if someone or something is just a joke or if it is actually problematic. I know that liberals can be ridiculous and push things too far, but this online anti-SJW push back can be pretty damn bad itself when it is willing to ignore real problems when they present themselves. Jokes do not equal racism, but jokes can in fact be used as a tool in an attempt to express unpopular views.

The last game I played that did this for me was Battlefield One: I learned more about WW1 simply by playing the game and reading loading hints than I did in high school and I thought that was badass.
And if I’m being honest? The lore videos about Siege give me something of a Star Trek vibe even if the story is as simple as people coming together in spite of and even learning to celebrate their differences to accomplish great things? I think stories like that will always be important.

I gotta admit you changed my mind. I didn’t exactly like thunderbirds design, really it was just the helmet and my only opinion about the chin was literally “you don’t see that everyday.” And I was also one of the few people back before I got out of politics was that Ubisoft was making all sorts of representation because otherwise they would get canceled on Twitter but then one night when I was reading lore and saw that Flores has a husband. This at the time threw me off because I was so used to overlyflamboyant gay characters or characters that the video game company shoved in your face that he was gay *cough cough* EA. All I remember thinking to myself when reading that Flores was gay, I was kind of happy because Ubisoft gave representation to the lgbt community and didn’t shove it everyone’s faces or make it obvious. And since then I’m perfectly fine with Ubisoft adding operators of different color and sexuality but I don’t think they should go down the road that EA went with Gibraltar.

    • @sithguy20awesome

I think Ubi deserves praise where it's due, representing different groups of people can be really cool and doing it so well with really cool and interesting characters is to be commended. Flores is a pretty cool character, and him being a gay man is a part of who he is, sure, but it isn't ALL of who he is. I dunno, I agree, I think it was pretty well done. The recent turn they've had in character writing has been pretty solid. Super agreed, things like the chin tattoos show Thunderbird's unique and personal background while being still pretty grounded in the world of the lore.
I hope they can keep on this sort of track or tone because it's pretty good!

I appreciate that Ubisoft incorporated a character like Thunderbird into the game. Some people are just ignorant of cultural differences and shit on other cultures because they have no clear understanding of that culture.
