Honestly this is the kind of light-hearted clownery that I needed right now. I was so sad that I was literally crying after watching Matpat's retirement announcement video, and I really just needed something funny, chill, and laid-back to help me calm down and pull myself together. I'm baffled by the fact that Huntlow made it on the top 10 list instead of Lumity, but they're cute so still happy anyway
Part of it is recency bias. Lumity is official from around the middle of season 2 onwards. Still a fantastic pair but I imagine a lot of the immediate "omg they're together" hype wore off by then(2023). First ep of the year- S3's 2nd episode which so happened to wrap up Willow and Hunter's character arcs and address growing feelings there so momentum was a bit more on their side with this kinda thing.
What that guy said, and i think lumity is SO PERFECT in the show that there was less space to explore, cus the show is basically its own fluff fic lol, but huntlow has more due to their arcs interacting in an interesting way
I agree with people above. Lumity is still awesome, but as they've already got together I think there's less room for fics, while Huntlow is newer and they didn't get together on screen, so there's endless potential. I personally prefer this ship, because those two were my favourite characters in the show. I'm also so sad that their arc were cut short due to cancellation.

Their's is a dynamic I never realized I needed - I don't deserve it - but I'm *SO* glad I have it now! It's the funniest ship I've got, but it's also, somehow, the most wholesome! And no one can deter my love for it! 🤣

Yes! I think eveyone went through this weird journey of shipping it as a crack ship and over time unironically loving it in secret. It’s been a year and a few months and I’m still actively reading fanficiton and it has been a hyperfixation of mine that does not seem to slow down. I will miss the big hype last year though def

I support Bowuigi mostly because it's funny still (Though I admit I'm more of a DaisUigi or PeasLuigi for real feels), and I have fun imagining Mario seethe is he dedicates maximum emotional endurance to just TOLERATE it because on the one hand this way at least Bowser's not kidnapping Peach now, but on the other hand he has to become an uncle to Bowsers kids / Koopalings and be their appointed babysitter... and that is a mighty tall ask from his brother, just for the sake of love.
But then things REALLY reach a boiling point when Bowser's old ex K.Rool shows up (who left him because he wants to hang in more intellectual circles because he's K.Rool is an INVENTOR and Bowser really is at the end of the day a SUPER archetypical meat-headed jock) and suddenly Bowser either tries to get him back because he's immature like that... OR he tries to overcompensate and show what a sweet piece of ass he's got now AND DON'T YOU FEEL BAD YOU MISSED OUT and Mario has to listen to Bowser get super-aggro with Luigi, perhaps even more than his bro is comfortable with but do you think Weegee is assertive enough to object? Will Mario try to help his brother and be some kind of therapy help for Bowser? Or will he just get angry and try to get him to leave? So much potential!

Reigen and Serizawa are a really sweet ship! Since the series is mostly focused on Mob and a coming of age story, serirei is a great opportunity for fans to delve into the world from an adult's perspective. Serizawa shares a lot of similarities with Mob as someone who isolated himself out of fear of hurting people with his psychic powers and actually ended up becoming a terrorist without realizing it (it makes sense in context lol), and started working at Reigen's agency after season 2 to reintegrate into society. Serizawa is a really popular side character and he appeals to the older fans because he shows that you can always have a fresh start, even as an adult. Serizawa doesn't get much focus in the series, so the ship is used as a way to explore his character as well as Reigen's character. Reigen is also pretty lonely in his adult life and a character like Serizawa is a great opportunity to explore that more in depth and realistically than Reigen and Mob's teacher and student dynamic

The spin-off manga "Reigen" made me realize that Serizawa is pretty much Reigen's only adult friend (if we don't consider the spirit Dimple), because time ago Reigen used to be quite distrustful of people, while now he's just constantly surrounded by middle schoolers. Which is... funny but also kind of wholesome, if we look at how lonely Reigen's life was in the past. It's been a huge improvement!

As someone who enjoys Serirei, I will say, the images of Serizawa you chose are of the character at his lowest point. The vibe I get from Serirei is this sense of growth through partnership. Reigen and Mob help Serizawa out of a pretty bad place, and there's a sort of peer-level mentorship from Reigen to Serizawa.

To be fair, the Doctor Who fandom has so many different ships that rather than using our combined power to make one ship trend (like the Merlin fandom) everyone has their own favorites and usually dislikes at least one other ship (some people love TenRose, some peoples can’t stand it, same thing for Thasmim or Whoudffaldi, etc.) So while #Doctor Who might trend, ship tags rarely do.

It's not really a shiping fandom. Doesn't mean there isn't plenty of fanart or gifs, but it's more about the monsters or the Doctor being cool/funny/philosophical.

As an og Wysper/Jeslyn fan (Wylan/Jesper), I HAVE to remind ya'll that this ship has existed!! For years!! I know it got popular because of the show, but there are books in which they are canon and it's just as adorable
Adorable in the books. Basically nonexistent in the show. I mean, it exists, but where is the buildup? Where is the chemistry? They were riding the coattails of the ship's popularity in the books and the charisma of the actors to sell it in the show, rather than actually putting any effort into writing it.

Most of the numbers definitely came from Tears of the Kingdom, but I think this encapsulates all of the Links and Zeldas across the games, which is really funny that so many, by all means, different ships with different characters count as one here, while Miraculous’ Adrien and Marinette have 4 separate ships to themselves. :D

There’s around 12 versions of Link and Zelda in the games and there’s definitely more when you consider the spin-offs and manga but it’s all counted as one ship even though there’s a least a dozen versions of it with multiple characters. Meanwhile Adrien and Marinette are the same person as Ladybug and Cat Noir and their love square from hell counts as 4. Why is being a Zelda fan so annoying sometimes?
S3 is coming for Heartstopper, so keeping my fingers crossed. I also think, based on the rest of this list, that for some people on Tumblr they're a bit...too perfect? I don't know how to describe this, but their relationship is incredibly healthy, they're completely adorable together, the writing of their dynamic is already so strong that I think it sometimes feels a little scandalous to stray from it. Like the canon Narlie is just SO GOOD that there's almost hesitancy to write fanfic and whatnot because you worry you won't be able to capture the perfection of their dynamic?

I think thats why the Adrienette ships are falling. They're together now and there isnt much else for them as a ship other than their actual - surprisingly healthy? - relationship.
This is why I generally read more gay ships because the majority of my straight ships are canon so I don’t feel the need to search for fic, the exceptions being couples that take multiple seasons to get together like deckerstar
Feels good to see Sonadow here, Sonic ships don't often get super high on the list, but in the top 40? Thank you Sonic Prime, for fueling the gay little children we all are!

Also as someone with insider knowledge, the funniest part about it all is that was almost entirely the work of Disney storyboarder and director Kiana Khansmith aka online artist Kianamai aka tumblr user and pokémon maniac yamujiburo (though a couple other users also created fics and content too). The entire reason it's in this list was her posting comics of the two being cute and growing closer together and I'm so happy for her because her stuff is incredible.

Definitely down to read some of them and see what it's all about to which is shocking, 'cause I never read fics for lesbian ships.
I highly recommend The Locked Tomb! It's an incredible book series and maybe the only thing I've enjoyed reading in the past 5 years. It does take a while to get through though since there are 3 books and each of them are written in very challenging prose with a very unreliable narrator. About half of the plot is completely lost on a first read- but if you're patient enough to dig into it, it's absolutely worth the trouble. And if you aren't, the whole thing is absolutely teeming with memes and tumblr references and big strong women in love with each other and terrible women in love with each other and love with teeth and death with love and sacrifice and grief and BONES and NECROMANCY and FLESH MAGIC so there's something for everyone in there iykwim ;) .
Absolutely! Reading Harrow made me question whether I was going insane or not from trying to understand it but it and the entire series are great! Here's hoping Alecto the Ninth rots my brain even more.

as a big serirei fan, i think the appeal is firstly reigen himself, mob psycho is fairly short and people are craving more content from it, particularly the fan favorite reigen, and also the dynamic reigen and serizawa have in season 3. it's clear that suzuki and serizawa's relationship is meant to parallel reigen and mob's, but even more toxic, and so having reigen take over in that mentor-ish role for serizawa and kind of heal his trauma from suzuki is very cathartic and sweet. it also helps that serizawa is very handsome in season 3 and there's an official promo art where it looks like he and reigen are getting married.

HuaLian is down 18 spots!!(I may or may not have become obsessed with TGCF recently, and have been showing it or ranting about it to as many people as possible!) Like just in the last year I've shown the anime to three of my siblings and am currently slowly working through watching it with my bff! Plus I've seen it by myself twice already.... and I'm trying to keep up to date on it(plus waiting with bated breath for the live action remake to come out) so yeah. Very sad to see this ship fall down so far! But maybe they'll rise from the ashes soon!

Ofmd isn’t getting renewed for another season. I personally didn’t watch the show, but seeing how it meant to so many groups of people it’s honestly saddening. Shows can’t last long anymore. Most shows are supposed to be able to finish their stories. It’s actually so sad that it’s rare to find a show with a ending where it didn’t get cut short.
S2 did feel like an end, but it was definitely cut short. It was propositioned as 3 series, 22 eps per season. S1 was instead 10 eps and s2’s budget, characters and ep count was cut even further. It’s honestly not that surprising that s3 was cut but GOD did that show mean so much to me
Look, it dropped at the very end of the year so I’m not surprised they didn’t make the list but. The Player Character (NOT self-insert, but his canon name is HUGE spoilers) x the Princess from “Slay the Princess” have got quite literally every dynamic under the sun except childhood friends going on (and who knows? We are getting an update this year… lol, I kid, it’s physically impossible for them.) Like, do you want battle couple? We’ve got 3 battle couples, and the route where they choose to duel eachother for eternity and find the greatest fulfillment possible in that act is fuckin’ *beautiful.* Do you want toxic? Baby, these two literally murder eachother over & over & over. Do you want wholesome? We’ve got a pure true love route AND one about healing from the pain you’ve gone through to become something more through finally choosing to trust someone. Soulmates? Well, not to spoil anything, but let’s just say the path where they *literally* fuse into a single being isn’t even the least subtle canon gets about them being eachother’s other half.
Plus, we’ve got, just, *all* your weird kinks here. Anyone can tell you this game is pretty femdommy (Princess will kick your ass & break your will, and you will *thank her.)* and obviously you only need to take one look at the promo images (or any art of the Player Character) to realize it is monsterfucking all the way down, but there are so many different *kinds* of monsterfuckery going on! Possession! Body horror! Vore (yes, there’s a vore route, and all I could think is “Well, *this* didn’t get mentioned in the fetish jokes, wtf?") Biblically accurate angels (several)!
…Yes, there are only 2 characters in this pairing. There are (arguably) only 2.5 characters in the whole *game.* But dammit, they do *everything!*

I can definitely say the drops drarry is taking is because of jegulus. Many people (myself included) somewhat graduated from drarry to jegulus this year. While the ships are definitely different, they have some similarities that people saw and 100% ran with (much less of an enemies to lovers and more of a best friends brother kind of think..although not always). It’s not necessarily people falling out of love with drarry, more so finding a new obsession in jegulus.
To add to this, the rise in jegulus is definitely because of the fics published this year. Jegulus has quite a few fics in the top 20 rn, when sorted by hits, and many said fics finished this year or last. So a lot of new people joining the jegulus train this year because of fic hype. (I joined right as Crimson Rivers was finishing updating, so spring of 2023)

I definitely recommend the locked tomb series. It’s a fantastically inventive sci-fi series. The tagline for the series is “lesbian necromancers in space” so it instantly caught my interest 😂. The books also reference a lot of tumblr memes and fanfic cliches that you’d probably enjoy. Tamsyn Muir one of the most chaotic authors out there.

Dreamnotfound was the most popular MineCraft TH-camr ship and started before DreamSMP. DSMP has a storyline, so most the ships are of the characters instead.
The DSMP characters and streaming personas were often similar, with a see-through 4th wall for many of them (thanks to a 98% improv rate) so streamers were often also shipped, but DSMP ships are character-first, and MCYT ships are persona-first.
Yeah you’re right, a lot of the ships were platonic, but the ones that weren’t died out with the end of DSMP.
There’s a lot of overlap obviously, since the server was made of friends in the first place, and the lines of character and streamer and even “pissing about” and “plot” are SO blurred, but that’s why DNF is still here, it’s popular MCYT, not DSMP
Also, it’s FUCKING MASSIVE
I am somewhat surprised that other SMP ships didn’t make the list, especially Double Life, but ik that wasn’t as weirdly massive as DSMP

I think because Heartstopper s2 came out in August which is kind of late in the year plus the lack of press for it because of solidarity with the strikes is what did it for them. But I think they'll go up in 2024 with s3..

I think it’s also interesting to see that these three pairings are the 6 main characters of the 6 of Crows duology, and none came from the grishaverse trilogy or king of scars duology. It’s indefinitely the work of the show let me tell you that much-the movement to bring it back and the overwhelming love for the crows is probably gonna raise them higher next year, at least I’d think Wesper or Kanej would go up (unfortunately Helnik doesn’t seem to be as popular which sucks because there is so much happening there that’s talked about waaay less than the other parts of the story smhh)

Oh I remember reading the trilogy and 6 of crows duology in high school, and yes, the ships are everything. But there’s something special about the crows compared to the og trilogy ships. (I haven’t read king of scars, please don’t spoil) but I agree with you lots! I miss reading the books for the first time 😭
