This is what the 80s were all about. Mowing down waves of nameless bad guys, cheesy one-liners, and a wicked steel drum soundtrack. Love it.

James Horners steel drum accompaniment for the film must be the most idiosyncratic score for an action film yet.
It works all the same, but it’s so unusual, even in a period of time when the parameters of the action genre were still being established.
Also, if you listen closely it’s clear that Horner was largely rehashing parts of his score from 48 HRS (1982). The only difference is that the steel drums in Commando are more strident and repetitious, but that’s part of the charm. At least it succeeds in its task, which is to evoke tension in the audience.

Anyone complaining about 80's movies' violence can shut the hell up and remember what modern movies are like, eg. Logan and countless others with not only senseless violence but there isn't even any fun in the movie, just darkness and sickening levels of negativity and hopelessness. The hero also isn't really any individual, it's always some covert government/similar organisation...

It's like I had a cousin who got a HD plasmas flat screen TV when they was new. When he saw a movie on a old box tv he was complaining how "poor" the quality of the images was. I'm just sitting thinking to myself "I don't see the difference besides a price between the TVs". I still have a old box tv from the 90s and it still runs like a champ. Those new fancy flat screen tvs need to be replaced every few years because they keep breaking. First time I bought a flat screen tv I went name brand. I really like this Arnold classic. Nice reaction guys. This was two years before Predator, and the Green Beret guy was with him in that film as one of his men. Nice Arnold impression. Nice Bill Paxton cameo. The flight attendant is Chelsea Field who played Teela in Masters Of The Universe (1987) with Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella. Arnold did Red Sonja the same year then Raw Deal in 1986.

Arnold hadn't yet started to flex his comedy muscles, so having an actress like Rae Dawn Chong really lifts the tone so the movie isn't depressing like Death Wish or similar. She's capable (a pilot and driver), intelligent (tries several times to immediately distance herself from the kidnapper and contact the authorities), adaptable (realises who is the real villain and stops the authorities hurting Matrix/quickly devises an escape plan when he's arrested) and doesn't instantly want to jump into a relationship with a man who (justified or not) just murdered several people in front of her. Plus she's funny and cute - what's not to like?
