Incomplete combustion is when a hydrocarbon burns in a limited supply of oxygen to produce water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and soot. Complete combustion burns with a blue flame and releases more energy than incomplete combustion. Incomplete combustion burns with a smoky orange flame.
