I have a 2009 bullet std. The cast iron one. But recently I am thinking of buying a second bullet. I love tci thunderbird avl. But the mechanics keep telling me that avl engine is not good. They tell me the engine is very noisy and cam set wears away in few thousand km. Pls share your experience.
The AVL engine is a reliable engine. It is a very strong engine and if properly maintained and cared for, it will last for a long time. Most of the issues caused with wearing of the cams and pushrods is because of mechanics incorrectly setting them. I have faced this issue till I started setting the engine like it says in the workshop manual. I haven't faced this issue since 2016. Running smoothly and without issues till date. When you compare it to the CI it is noisy. This is by design. UCE is also very noisy. But that's the issue. Every one compared AVL to CI and tried to set it like the CI. This is where all the issues usually start. Check out any other British single, they are all noisy. That's the nature of the engine.
What a beautiful stock motorcycle!
Kudos on maintaining this so well!

@slaughttur hi that is very encouraging. I wanted to know how you shifted the decompressor to cylinder head?
