  • The American Civil War was the defining event in the history of the USA. Between 1861 and 1865 10,000 battles and engagements were fought across the continent, from Vermont to the New Mexico Territory, and beyond.
    The war began when the Confederates bombarded Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina on April 12, 1861. The war ended in Spring, 1865. Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. The last battle was fought at Palmito Ranch, Texas, on May 13, 1865.
    There is a wealth of information available on the American Civil War, and a vast number of different rule sets for this period. My favourite rules are brother against brother at the following link.
    en.wikipedia.or...
    The flags were purchased from flags of war www.flagsofwar.com
    Unless you have hours and hours to spend on painting vast miniature Wargames armies, I would suggest trying the Army Painter range of coloured primers. With this confederate army I primed all of the figures in Uniform Grey, which reduced my painting time massively. I added a variety of appropriate colour paints to the figures and then dipped them in strong tone quick shade, which gives great shading effects to all of the recesses on the figures. The only real downside to the quick shade (apart from the price) is that it leaves the figures very shiny, so I gave them a couple of thin sprays of matt varnish. The process is very quick and reduces painting time significantly. The next stage is to base the figures, and you can do them individually or on stands (groups) of figures. Stands are easier for moving across the battlefield.

      Thanks Daniel, I prefer the dip to the washes. Try using a slightly lighter base colour before dipping, that does seem to work. Thanks for commenting 👍

    I’m undecided which scale figures to go for. I also want rules that show the way a battalion operated such as when in road march (column of 2’s.)
    Field column (not sure about this but I suppose it depends on the battalion size in figures).
    Line and extended line. I suppose a figure = 20 men so basing would more than likely a single ran of figures, unless using 10mm figures then 2 ranks might be ok.
    I would go for Warlords Epic Scale but that would mean using 5figure wide bases with no real character to them. However
    they do look good when painted and painting all the same figures would speed up my painting, I hope.
    Rules of choice would be fire and fury but I’ve never played the regimental version.
    But I need the best book on uniforms old the campaigns the regiments fought in.
    With napoleonic brits I can paint the battalions in the 5th. Division peninsula war because have the information although some of the pre 1809 campaigns would be difficult.
    As for New Orleans Wellington said of the force c in c that on his appointment, “He has the makings of a good Brigadier General”. But he had a relative in the government so the Duke was ignored.
    Back in the early ‘70’s I mounted a 25mm. infantry figure on a half inch wide base but I would be pushed to mount lead figures on a 15mm wide base.
    On a 6 feet X 4 feet table my Brit Competition Army was all B class infantry, 22 figures and artillery, C class light cavalry of 24 . figures and 20 C class heavy cavalry. Almost 3/4 of the table. As most gamers are limited to a 6x4 table at home I will be keeping to that size if 28mm but 15mm will give me double the space but cost more in figures.

      Yeah I completely understand that. At my local gaming club everyone plays 28mm, so that has made my decision for me.
      I’ve got back in to Warhammer 40K and the Old World recently, as well.
      The other bonus with 28mm scale is that I can just about see them to paint them. My eyesight has got really bad with age! I darent try painting anything on a smaller scale now!

    You put the gun barrel upside down. There is a screw there to adjust the angle of the barrel. It's not a sight. So many people get this wrong

    Figures look great. Small gun base looks a little odd. I prefer to have bigger base footprint to represent the limbers and the spacing between guns in a battery. Do you go for a 40mm frontage?

    • @wargamesgeek1334
      @wargamesgeek1334  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for taking the time to add a comment. I agree with the base sizing, I used the 40mm bases that came with the box set, this was so that I could fit them all into my display cabinet, but otherwise I would have gone a bit bigger 👍

    • @wargamesgeek1334
      @wargamesgeek1334  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Malcolm, you’re absolutely right. I’ve got some 6mm Napoleonics and they are much better for larger battles. The 28mm are pretty good for smaller scale skirmish type scenarios unless you have a table the size of a swimming pool to play on. Thanks very much for taking the e time to comment, much appreciated 👍
