I used both this and the Sony 50/1.2GM and I think this lens is as sharp as the GM, however, the GM is faster, has better AF and has a lot better CA control. Still the 55/1.8 ends up in my camera bag more often. I love its character and pop.
I totally agree! I think this lens might be due for an update but it would probably undercut sales on the f/1.4 and f/1.2 GM lenses.
I own the lens and the color rendition is great indeed.
That’s awesome, glad to hear it!!
Hey! Would you recommend this lens for video content? Thank you!
I use it for video! It doesn’t have an Auto/manual focus switch but you can control that on your camera. Other than that I think it works well for video 👍🏻
@@TheBergreens thank you!!
One of my favorite aspects of this lens is its character. For me there is just something special about the images it produces. Makes it pretty important for my street stuff, especially street portraits
I totally agree! It’s probably also nice for street work because of its small and less intimidating size.
I could have chosen Samyang 50 mm 1.4 mkII but this Zeiss is sharp corner to corner and has such vibrant tones with a superb bokeh... for 280 euros I think I made a very good deal..thank you so much for this great review!
Nice, so glad you're enjoying it! Thanks for watching!
This is my go to lens with just about EVERYTHING. I'm looking now for a wider angle lens that will be the perfect compliment that gives me a much wider capture. I grabbed the Sony Zeiss FE 4/16-35, but the image/video quality just doesn't match. Any recommendation?
If you want a zoom, the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 is really good, especially the V2. Another good option is the Sony 24mm GM
I have the 50mm 1.8… like you said… poor quality….
Currently thinking about whether to get the 50mm 2.5g, or this 55mm….
I'd look for a used copy of the 55! The 2.5 won't be as good in low light or have as pretty bokeh :)
Thank you for a great review! What do you think about Sony 50mm f2.8 macro? How does it compare with Sony Za 55mm? I like the versatility of having close focus but only zeiss has that 3D pop.
The 50mm f2.8 macro ( amzn.to/4ac7FTJ ) is a solid option. Only downside is that it is limited to f/2.8 where most 50mm lenses are a bit faster (f 1.4 to f/1.8). If you're not shooting in low light, I'd say go for it!
Nice review, it would be great to see some sample images of what youre talking about as the video goes by.
Yes, working on that for future videos, thanks for watching!
Would this work in a a6400 sony ? It’s not full frame
It works?
Thanks
Yes but it will be more like an 82mm lens due to the 1.5x crop on your sensor. Will still be a great lens, just a bit more telephoto 👍🏻
Rokinon and Samyang are the same company.
Good to know! I suspected that but it's kinda hard to tell from their marketing materials!
Can this lens be used with a Sony A7S III?
Absolutely, I use it on my a7siii all the time!
@@TheBergreens Awesome! Thanks for the response.
Sorry it was slow but glad to help!
It is NOT a 50mm Lens and THAT is one of the reasons why I have the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 T* ZA Lens, it is very good build quality, it is compact and light weight, the image quality is super, I can very highly recommend this Lens. I do not like the 50mm focal length, so 55mm is fine for me, any focal length Lenses shorter or longer than 50mm. Recently (December 2023) my local store (in Europe) had five used 55mm in good condition for US $360 included taxes, there was also a used battered 55mm in working order for US $180 included taxes, they are all sold now.
You’re right, it’s not a proper 50 but it’s an awesome lens for the price! Especially those deals you mentioned!
@@TheBergreens No 50mm lens is "proper", I do not see what all the fuzz with the 50mm focal length is about. Any focal length shorter or longer then 50mm is better ! So 45mm or shorter and 55mm and longer is much better focal length Lenses.
When I shoot with it clients see the difference...they're always delighted.
