So imagine what life was like when I was a kid. It blows my mind how far we have come in my 40 short years on this rock. We went from black and white analog broadcast. To me holding this phone talking at the world.

I always had a deep respect for science, but in many cases it was a fairly "cold" respect without that pure emotional connection that true scientists do. Videos like this help me not just to respect the beauty of science, but to see and feel it myself.
There are no bad things in this world that can't lead to something good. I regretfully admit and shamefully announce that I have discovered you through your criticism of Anita Sarkeesian. Those videos were funny (and logical), but your scientific videos have so much passion and beauty in them. And to think that without AS's crap I would have never discovered your channel...

The development of medical tech has made it possible to better identify what type of leukemia, or cancer that one has. It used to just be stains and microscopy that ID'd the leukemia, but now we can use flow cytometry and identify what kind of leukemia it is far better than with microscopy alone.
With microscopy, it is very easy to improperly diagnose the leukemia, because in some cases the malignant cells may look nearly identical to another incorrect cell type.
We also owe much of our understanding of cancer, to Henrietta Lax.

Still one of my favorite videos in all of youtube. The invisible beauty of science.
Thank you Phil. Honestly, I use your name as a way to try and show how beautiful I find the video, And how much I appreciate its creation, I look at this when I am sad, And the fact that humanity has come this far in such a small ammount of time gives me hope for the future.

I can do nothing but stand in absolute awe as I marvel at the wonders of human intellect, human aesthetics and human creativity.
    We should worship ourselves!
Yet I remain humble. We have only scratched the surface of the secrets of the universe, and what we know, is easily overshadowed by what we do not know.
Personally, I cannot wait too see what else we can find, discover and create.
    Thanks for a great video!

The thing that sickens me most about Christianity is how it says we are all messed up and fallen, sinful, broken, and incapable of doing anything without a deity to help us out. Thank you for showing so well how amazingly epic humanity is. This is not arrogance. This is an appreciation of what others have done for me and the rest of our species. My one hope is that I will be able to give to the next generation what past generations have given to me.

I don't think I ever got to say this two years ago when I first watched this video, but this is one of the most moving videos I've ever seen. Coming from a family that believes humans can do no right, seeing that other people believe in humanity and what we have accomplished, makes me happy.

Almost brought tears to my eyes as I cannot help to feel the same. Sure, people can say that technology brought bad sides. Sure they can say that mankind is better off without it. No no matter what arguements they throw regarding the good will of the scientific achievments - they cannot deny how amazing they are.

  • @amoxtlacatl

    Dear TF,
This video reveals much more about your thinking than most of your earlier work - and puts that work in context.
You have given us a powerful emotional plea for science - and I am moved by it.
I hear your plea: respect science.
Respect science, not as a thing to worship on an altar, but as the fruits of countless numbers of humans throughout many generations - fruits that make our lives better and might be impossible to recover if lost.
Love of science is love of mankind.
    TY, TF.

Maybe this is just the right place to put this, recently I thought to myself:
Human kind's great powers lie in our weaknesses. Because of that we are always forced to work and coorporate together, to make compromises and reach agreements. One human can do very little, two can do a bit more. But thousands can litterary move a mountain. We have done so in the past and will do so again in the future.
Keep up your exellent videos, Thunderf00t.

Awesome vid. It does make me proud to be a human being when I see such a display of true passion and to seek the truth.Scientists are the new pioneers of the human race.Without science our worlds simply could not advance and we would be destined to believe in bronze aged myth.We have advanced so far during this last century...Our ancestors would be proud not to mention shocked.I would love to just see where our brains will take us in the future but I can only imagine.

For the time I put into studying aerospace engineering at school I could pick another major that pays far more. However, the advancement of humanity is more important to me than personal gains, I only hope I will contribute to a monumental project such as the mars ladings etc. A video like this was needed, people need to understand the infrastructure of the world is only the foundation sciences use to progress on. Great video! A problem I have with many atheists is that they seem to be very vacuous, nihilistic creatures- "I don't need God, don't need religion, don't need belief, don't need..." etc. So it's wonderful to see an atheist get passionate about something positive.
"In my mind's eye, I perceive the symphony of mathematics..." Grand! I wish all people could find such beauty in the world around them.

A point of the video is that in 100 short years, humanity has come together in ways that were not possible previously. Humans still fight, but now we also collaborate globally to delve into the wonders of the universe and to create. I agree that our resources are not enough-they are finite, while our population growth accelerates. Nonetheless, this video focuses on our curiosity, our ability to cooperate, our striving for knowledge. TY TF for acknowledging the accomplishments they engendered..

Without Technology, we wouldn't be where we are today. without technology we wouldn't be able to traverse the underwater mountains of the oceans or exceeded the limits of our own atmosphere. Its true that there can be much to fear in some aspects of technology, but in the end, when you really think about it, there's so much good that comes from technology that out weighs the bad. I for one am glad to see that technology is saving so many lives.

You know, I always criticize mankind for this or that, but after truly realizing the feats of beauty and grandeur that we have been able to accomplish, despite our differences and internal struggles, I have to come to the conclusion that humans value the pursuit of knowledge and discovery more than all their political struggles for power and wealth, and that they are willing to leave behind their grudges to move in that direction.
And THAT alone makes me immensely proud to be Homo Sapiens.

Some years ago I was working in Silicon Valley I visited the small and I think neglected collection of space memorabilia at the entrance to the Ames Research center. They had a small piece of moon rock on display and a Mercury capsule. I was impressed by how crude the capsule appeared, but it was the moon rock that got me thinking. This small piece of rock represented a culmination of 1,000's of years of accumulated knowledge. Quite something.
