I enjoy your perspectives even when I disagree and I really like your takes on the lore and how you present them. Gonna be honest, at first I wasn't going to watch this because I thought I knew all about the Weapons of Sorrow (I love this bit of lore and am really excited to learn more about the Drifter's days as a Shadow of Yor). But I didn't realise that the Malfeasance that I'm grinding for (need Gambit wins, really hard when half your teammates are friggin' bots) wasn't technically a Weapon of Sorrow. Thank you for this video and a chance to learn more about this interesting universe Byf!
It has always been my belief that when it comes to guns such as Grasp of Malok and the Crota’s End guns (and maybe Black Spindle, etc.), they are likely human weapons that Guardians have attached Hive chitin/relics onto in an effort to infuse their power into the weapon.
When you finish the Last Word quest and talk to the Drifter, it gives you every stage of “The Book of Unmaking” (the lore set, you can find it in triumphs, lore, the darkness, you’ll see it). And as Byf mentioned, the weapons of sorrow are made with the instruction of the book of unmaking. The Last Word doesn’t looked very hive-ish but why else would the instruction manual for making the weapons of sorrow be unlocked?
Likely to go and make Thorn, the antithesis of The Last Word. Sure, it could be construed as a Weapon of Sorrow if you decided to take a stance and say WoS are those that have permanently killed guardians, which is sort of what I argue on behalf of--yet that depends on if you can really call Dredgen Yor/Rezzyl Azir a guardian anymore
After a year and a half break from D2, I have returned... I played every day of D1, but D2 couldn't hold my interest at the time. Now there is SO much to do it's difficult to catch up. Your lore videos have been incredible. In both educating me and taking me for trips through The Vault of Glass, and Oryx's downfall. Keep up the killer work!
Couldn't you just say that Weapons of Sorrow are just weapons typically made by destruction with the intent of solely destruction? Thorn robs people of their light, the raid weapons are either linked directly to Hive use or was made using the Hive's understanding of darkness, or in some cases were meant to corrupt indefinitely and destroy the user(Touch of Malice.) To me, it seems more accurate that the term "Weapons of Sorrow" is meant to be a counter to how guardians typically are. We usually use weapons to either destroy those who would do humanity harm, or to sharpen our fangs in the crucible for fights to come. Weapons of Sorrow, in this context, would have a more clear meaning: They are weapons that bring about sorrow because the intent lying behind them isn't always(or in some cases EVER) about aiding humanity or protecting others.
He already addressed that issue on his Twitter. It’s just a title. The Drifter is not Dredgen Yor. All of the shadows of Yor have the dredgen title before their name. Like the darth in front of every sith name in the Star Wars universe.
Was Murmur a weapon of Sorrow? I know it's a weapon fused with Hive tech but it could just be that. It's more like the raid weapons from Crota's End and King's Fall.
One worth mentioning is the Red Death, referred to by Aunor I in the 2nd or 3rd encrypted communication that we've received so far from them. It isn't strictly hive related, but it has confirmed guardian kills past the point of resurrecting which I would see as makings of a Weapon of Sorrow.

The Book of Unmaking is a super interesting read. It describes how the Shadows are trying to utilize the darkness to craft weapons that can be used against it. The advent of the tetrahedron ships is looming on the horizon and with all the talk of choosing a side even if it is the wrong one, I can only assume that guardians may need to craft the weapons to survive the impending attack. I'm so excited about season of the Drifter because of the storyline potential!
It would be nice if they had some explanation of what happened to nechrochasm and the touch of malice. They're both incredibly powerful weapons and I feel that they wouldn't have been merely lost during the red war. Someone must've found them
Threatening the legendary Dredgen Yor with his own cursed weapon is an exciting prospect... but he may not be Dredgen *Yor.* He could be another of the shadows who took on the name of Dredgen to follow in his footsteps. I wonder which he’ll turn out to be.
ExAstris- 3130 The Drifter couldn’t be Dredgen Yor, even if he did survive the encounter with Shin Malphur... If you read the Drifter lore cards, Shin Malphur has met the drifter, and voiced his opinions on him. It appears Shin might be using Gambit to draw the Shadows out of hiding and hunts them down. The drifter being referred to as Dredgen would just be because of his possible involvement with the Shadows of Yor.
Sanders 7981 he could be the real yor , the one we hear about in the early d1 and d2 lore could have been another shadow. The drifter is one of the oldest gardians along with saladin the lore really hints that he is someone hiding his true name.
Jhelyssa M. I think it is more likely that the Shadow who aims his Thorn at the Drifter is Dredgen Vale, as Dredgen Vale is a hunter, whereas the Drifter has no class or rather does not belong to any specific class
I lean more towards classifying a weapon of sorrow as a weapon ment to corrupt a guardian and pit a guardian against another repeatedly. Ie, Thorn, it will slowly corrupt any guardian to the point of attacking pitting one anainst another eventually. That is how I read/remember the gun being discribed. I could be off though. Thoughts, feelings anybody?
G Alexander Bryant i want to call malfeasance a weapon of sorrow. You had to defeat guardians in order to build it, and the original purpose for the gun was to defeat Shin.
@@CouchEconomyTX And I'd like to add that taken energy is only one step away from hive magic as well, being Oryx controlled them. It stands to reason that some other high ranking hive mau have dabbled in combining the two at one point or another
As far as the theory of spreading corruption through Guardian ranks. It reminds me of a tactic used by certain spec ops groups in Vietnam. When coming across enemy weapon and ammunition caches, rather than destroy them, the spec ops guys would seed tampered rounds and weapons in the cache. The weapons were designed to be able to fire a few rounds and then suffer a catastrophic failure maiming or killing the user. The ammunition was designed to do that to a weapon that had not been tampered with.
If I remember the Bad Juju perks correctly; kills a) instantly reload the weapon, b) increase the weapon’s damage output and c) charge your super. The more you kill, the stronger you are......isn’t that the sword logic in a nutshell?
Would the Mindbender’s ambition count as a weapon of sorrow? The Mindbender was himself corrupted by the hive and the gun has hive runes all over it. It’s just a theory but I’m surprised Byf didn’t talk about it.
Hast thou heard the legend of [Kane] and [Abel], not something I should say but...a guardian [murdering] their ghost is something that gets my gullet watering...O reader mine
The shapes on the side of Bad Juju are tetrahedrons seen from above (ie the shape of Motes of Dark, the Triangle Ships, and the theme of darkness in general)
What about Bad Juju? I’d personally consider it as well as Touch of Malice. I know that Toland creates Bad Juju and not the Hive, but Touch of Malice is definitely created by the Hive since he intended it to be given to us
Malfeasance is prolly a weapon of sorrow, it's supposed to be Drifters replacement for Thorn. And an Ornament for it makes it look all Taken'y and stuff. It also has a perk to where it's stronger towards Taken; which might lead back to the taken king and D1 if you look hard enough
Whisper and Touch are both Weapons of Sorrow. You don't get much more influential than being directly associated with and touched with the essence of a hive god.
Jotunn is a weapon of sorrow. Makes me cry all the time when a guardian is one shot from.death and out comes the hail mary Jotunn

Touch of malace is quite the revese of a weapon of sorrow, it was the elements of hive that humans took and then placed their art of war on
Kind of wish we had a weapon that seemed like it was a pure light weapon but turned out to be a Weapon of Sorrow.
A Salty One Golden Gun? Makes me sad half the time
Me from the future with lumina
Something you might like, the brand new chaperone ornament is called the Panama ravine. Implying the Panama canal is RIP right now
like the drifter said
we are insane punks who will play both sides
a challenge I gladly accept
Oh too true if duel wield was available for exotics, in one hand thorn in the other last word
@@DragonKnight90001 that would be awesome
"A side should always be taken, even if it's the wrong one."
I wanted to ask byf what he thought about that. I really think hes yor and I felt that way since they introduced him.
I think he could be Dredgen Vale, one of the founders of the Shadows.
Jhelyssa M. I think it is more likely that the Shadow who aims his Thorn at the Drifter is Dredgen Vale, as Dredgen Vale is a hunter, whereas the Drifter has no class or rather does not belong to any specific class
Dang it byf you feed me this 4 days before the next season and I love and hate it keep up the great work (and that sexy voice)
I feel very Thorny right now 🥵🥵🥵
I feel horny tho
the sword logic bearing its way into a guardians brain seems to be the key factor in what a weapon of sorrow is
Last time I was this early I caught her cheating. Then she left and took the kids.
Fecking Karen
Weapon of sorrow confirmed.
Awwwww hell yeah! A Byf upload!
Would the bad juju pulse rifle count as a weapon of sorrow?
I think it would
I think it is since it was a byproduct of tolands corrupt ideas and research of the hive and their sword logic.
Did you watch the video?
It's theorized to be a failed weapon of sorrow.
@@michaelhenry3234 I wouldn't be suprised if it was a failed weapon.
the only man who can save destiny lore
Jokes on you Byf Shin is Dredgen Vale.
OOOHHHWEEE !! Mahh boy !! Gettin your chops back for real !!! That’s the BYF I grew to love and respect ! Super on point man ! Good shit !!! 👏👏👏🔥💯💥🕺🏽
"What are weapons of sorrow?"
Well if you into a emo kid's room, you will find plenty of them
If I remember the Bad Juju perks correctly; kills a) instantly reload the weapon, b) increase the weapon’s damage output and c) charge your super. The more you kill, the stronger you are......isn’t that the sword logic in a nutshell?
Bad Juju was Toland's attempt to copy them. But it isn't an actual weapon of sorrow.
Too bad Shin Malphur is Dredgen Vale...
Amazing vid, keep up the great work Byf!
Jesus finally another destiny video. Enough with Anthem
This is very cool Byf! I learned some other things I had no clue about!
Just watched as I got Thorn last week. Now working toward the Necrotic Grip Gaunlet.
Keep up the great content byf! loving it as always!
In my mind, a weapon of sorrow is a weapon that twists the weilder and either feeds off the weilder, or what it kills. A hungry weapon, if you will.
Yay when I saw a byf video I gained my will to live
Travelers Chosen (damaged) is a weapon of sorrow. It not just only kills guardians it makes them deeinstall...
Just got my thorn! Had to make a last second clutch with Chaos Reach in the strike. Looking forward to using it.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR ANOTHER VIDEO LETS GO!
Posted my views on your Twitter announce for the vid. Not disappointed, great video ma dude!
Finalllyyy got the last word idfk how it took this long but it's fucking amazing
Great video as always mate!
The shapes on the side of Bad Juju are tetrahedrons seen from above (ie the shape of Motes of Dark, the Triangle Ships, and the theme of darkness in general)
U are on your A game Byf! Great video
Thorn one-shotting guardians. Reminds me of Thorn’s glory days in Destiny 1.
Minus the whole corruption and permanent-death
Lol i put you on when its nap/bed time for my kids my 5 year old son loves the books of sarrow now
This is so cool. Never realized the purpose of the weapons.
More fantastic lore. Keep it comin. Hope everything is still all well with you. Also just have to say... man.... I miss bad juju
What about Bad Juju?
I’d personally consider it as well as Touch of Malice. I know that Toland creates Bad Juju and not the Hive, but Touch of Malice is definitely created by the Hive since he intended it to be given to us
I love this mans lore
Byf you should convert your recordings into podcasts.I would love to listen to your content over Spotify, while on the go or at work
Malfeasance is prolly a weapon of sorrow, it's supposed to be Drifters replacement for Thorn.
I miss year 3 necrochasm with it's ornament. Such a beautiful fun gun.
