Just wonderful. Tender and loving, yet biting. Hurting and yet accepting.

Unfassbar schön gesungen mit solcher tiefen Empfindung, dass es fast schmerzt ....

Have no knowledge of german language to follow his intentions but as usual Vickers blooms with musical expression. "Helped" by the voice?...

@hgburgin he dosnt go up the last notes beacose they are no not writen. There two ways the singer can sing thus song. With high A and without it.

Lovely version if you are going to accept not doing the A. He certainly makes the most of the phrase emotionally without it, which is to be commended. Souzay also does not sing the A, and does a stunningly artistic version. They both are very good. I kinda like the A, anyway. Is it too aria-like? Damn straight. Love it, though.

Why you think it is more dificult, then with the high A?
I sing it in the same way without A. It is not an aria, singer can show emotions with other metods than high notes.

When the high note is not sung, it takes away from the urgency that is an important element in this song. D. Fischer-Dieskau, E. Wächter, and F. Wunderlich, among the male singers, set the standard. Just my opinion! Thank you.

If you can't sing the A, don't sing the song (or take it down a step!), Just my op. I'm not a freak for high notes, but good Lord, Vickers was a master of high notes, and this one is essential.

Your opinion is poorly informed. The score indicates both the version Vickers is singing and the version with the leap up a fifth on "herz."

      I am aware of
that because the score is sitting on my piano now. It was just my opinion. If one wants to get all pissy about it, everything from 'Schlang' die dir am Herze frisst' crescendos to forte and sustains the forte till the end. I can't believe I just took that much trouble to inform you of this.

Geez. don't get so petty! In my 'opinion,' to judge the 'urgency' of a lied (with text by Heine!) solely by the inclusion/exclusion of a high note, is to criminally disregard the other elements that make a great lied interpretation. Vickers would probably be disappointed to be reduced to a 'master of high notes' when he was first and foremost a deeply sensitive interpreter of text, and I'm sure he was very proud of what he was able to do in this performance.
