Souzay also does not sing the A, and does a stunningly artistic version. They both are very good. I kinda like the A, anyway. Is it too aria-like? Damn straight. Love it, though.
Why you think it is more dificult, then with the high A? I sing it in the same way without A. It is not an aria, singer can show emotions with other metods than high notes.
When the high note is not sung, it takes away from the urgency that is an important element in this song. D. Fischer-Dieskau, E. Wächter, and F. Wunderlich, among the male singers, set the standard. Just my opinion! Thank you.

In my 'opinion,' to judge the 'urgency' of a lied (with text by Heine!) solely by the inclusion/exclusion of a high note, is to criminally disregard the other elements that make a great lied interpretation. Vickers would probably be disappointed to be reduced to a 'master of high notes' when he was first and foremost a deeply sensitive interpreter of text, and I'm sure he was very proud of what he was able to do in this performance.

Your opinion is poorly informed. The score indicates both the version Vickers is singing and the version with the leap up a fifth on "herz."
