I just found you... And I've been using totes for years for my potato's and my back yard cucumber plant and I thought I was the only one that did that... I also have a bunch of ( 5gal.) ice cream container's for free and I've been using them to now for the past two years... I grow in the ground in my front yard for my tomatoes and they grew to about 10 foot tall last year. And so did my front yard cucumber. My pepper plants did really well the year before. We will see this year how it goes... What kind of plant food do you recommend????

You have single handedly begun a garden revolution, woman!! DEFINITELY you need to write a book before someone beats you to it!
Years ago my husband built a 4x8 raised bed. I planted a few things & got some tomatoes. Most plants died. It was too far from the house, didn't get watered enough, & at 71 I gave up when it got hot. This year (before I found you) I planted 8 galvanized tubs around the deck. I'm excited about gardening again! I still didn't water enough in the hot 100° Missouri summer, but got more veggies than ever before. For the 1st time I got a couple of pumpkins, cantaloupe, & watermelon, some cukes, peppers & scads of tomatoes! Too many rotted because I didn't know what to do with them & didn't know you can freeze them. Lettuce & carrots were failures, but learned a lot from that.
Drilling holes on tub bottoms didn't work too well, but cannot wait til next spring. Already collecting tubs, & will reuse some galvanized ones with a few holes in the sides.
I know this is way too long, but I'm so delighted with my little bit of success, that I HAD to tell someone! No one else understands how exciting this is. THANK YOU!!!

@@pattimears200 I remember buying a few start up baby watermelon plants and planting them in the tote. The tote is up against a lattice and the vines hooked up to that very nicely. Now, I'm trying for the first time, growing pomegranates from seed. First, I placed them in a wet napkin into a sealable bag waited about 2 weeks, then planted them in small pots. It's been about a week, so far so good. Crossing my fingers X.

This is the most successful garden season I’ve ever had. I live on the east coast of Virginia it’s hot and steamy here. Grow bags didn’t work here, but the totes are amazing. I also use 5 gallon buckets. Although I never wanted to grow in plastic containers I kept an open mind and I found out that totes and 5 gallon buckets are the answer for me.

I know how you feel, but we live in a Plastic world, so I keep what I can out of the landfill, and never store plastic water bottles full of water in my car, ( I found out a very good friend did that for months, in the trunk of their car in case they wanted a bottle of water) I had to let them know, NO NO NO, usually I let people do what they want, but in this case, that was not at all good for someone's health, that hot closed trunk can get over 180degrees, and months in the truck...well you know. But outdoors will never get that hot, and soil is even cooler than the air. SO, all is good, take care, thanks, Robbie

This is such a fantastic idea! At first I was apprehensive about plastic in the garden but then my fiance put it to me this way: the stuff plastic should be used for is stuff you want to last as long as possible. Plastic not breaking down makes it a problem in landfills and is why we stay away from single use plastic as much as possible. But that lack of breakdown? Is what makes it perfect for things you want to use for a long time, such as garden containers. Can't wait to have a much more economic and fruitful season this year 😁

2 piece of advice. I live in an area that can be 100 degrees in the summer and down to 0 in the winter. I didn’t empty my totes when winter came, in the summer some of my bins and totes had become brittle. I recommend emptying the bins and storing them out of the elements if you live in a similar area.
2nd I have a few 8’x4’x 2’ to help use up some of the 24” depth I filled the bottom layer with yard waste. Old logs, the dried tumble weeds, autumn leaves, these will all decompose and fertile the soil toward the bottom. I have also seen videos where seasoned gardens will add compostable items into in a layer. We have a very short growth period and the ground she be pretty warm before planting some vegetables, the bins allow the soil to warm up faster. I can also do a mini greenhouse tunnel with hosing or pvc over a individual bin for cheap, allowing me to plant vegetables that aren’t freeze resistant early then I could otherwise AND also extends my growing season into the fall past our first few freezes.

For those concerned with longevity of totes due to sun, depending on how spendy you want to get and how much effort you want to put in, try wrapping your totes with that shiny foil bubble wrap insulation and then covering that with a couple of layers of shade cloth or reed/babmboo fencing, enough so the foil isn't too obvious. One could also set the totes in a garden bed and planting around the totes with flowering annuals or herbs that grow to the same height to disguise the sides of the totes. Oregano is a good choice since it's not too demanding and will be happy with runoff from the tote, especially column-type oregano. Let it flower, the bees will love it. Borage also gets nice and big, somewhat prickly but another bee favorite. It can be a self-seeder but volunteers are easy to remove and borage is GREAT for your compost. Not sure how very cold weather will affect the totes as the last garden I had was in California. However, nothing will last forever. I'd clean'em up at the end of each season and put them in a garage or shed if I was gardening in snow or hard feeeze territory.

Ty for the explanation of the plastic- I know many people needed that- also one day ppl need to understand the difference of planting then covering with a mulch and planting with UN composted mulch ! 🤪 I understand many people do not have knowledge or understanding!!

You have giving so many people your energy to grow your own. I have learned so much and starting to see results from using bins. Still learning but loving it.

I'm so glad! So worth a try, I love how I can PACE my containers as needed, which SAVES ON EXPENSIVE soil, use that soil on the top of the containers, and fill the base of the totes with cheap (great stuff) like leaves and garden matter, THANKS, Robbie
